Auto-correct is about to get a whole lot better on iPhone. That’s because Apple overhauled how auto-correct works in iOS 17, and that software update is now available for iPhone. iOS 17 also includes loads of new features like interactive widgets, StandBy mode, Live Voicemail, FaceTime voice and video mail, and much more.

While iOS 17 is packed with new features and changes, here are several things to look for after you update:

  • Redesigned and re-engineered autocorrect with inline text recommendations
  • StandBy mode when charging in landscape orientation for viewing clocks, widgets, photos, and now playing music at a glance
  • Live Voicemail with real-time transcriptions without answering
  • Contact Posters for customizing how you appear when calling others
  • FaceTime audio and video messages for when your call is unanswered
  • Check In safety feature in Messages destination updates for friends and family
  • Downloadable offline maps for using Apple Maps without internet
  • Password and passkey groups and sharing with iCloud Keychain
  • Siri activation without saying “Hey”
  • Adaptive Audio, Personalized Volume, and Conversation Awareness with AirPods
For the longer version, check out Jeff Benjamin’s epic video walkthrough of literally everything to know about iOS 17:

iOS 17 is available as a free software update for iPhone XS and later. Look for the update on your iPhone in Settings -> General -> Software Updates.

During the iOS 17 beta testing process from June to September, MacRumors wrote a series of in-depth feature guides highlighting every major new addition, plus how tos that walk you through using the new features.

This comprehensive guide rounds up all of our coverage, making it a great resource for casual users who haven't had a chance to test out ‌iOS 17‌ and those who might not remember all of the new features. Everything is organized by app or feature to make it easy to find what you might be looking for.

Something I noticed after the upgrade is that some apps that had a dark background, like WhatsApp, for instance, now display in a soft gray. I'm using dark mode on the phone.
Here for me (older iphone 11) no problem with new iOS 17. WhatsApp (version 2.23.18.78) has still the dark background exactly the same as on previous iOS 16...

I discovered the latest update to WhatsApp added a new preference for how dark you want it to be. Turned it to full dark and problem is now solved :)

How to configure StandBy: iOS 17 guide
In order to configure StandBy iOS 17, follow these steps:

Ensure iOS 17: First and foremost, make sure your iPhone is running iOS 17 to access this feature.

Proper placement: Place your locked iPhone in landscape orientation on an upright charger. It's important to note that StandBy won't activate on flat or low-angle chargers, and your screen must be locked.

Automatic activation: StandBy is enabled by default, so once you meet the criteria mentioned above, it will automatically appear on your screen.

Once you've made sure you meet all these requirements, you're ready to dive deep into iOS17's StandBy feature. Here is what you can do to configure StandBy iOS 17:
  • Widget selection: Swipe up on either the analog clock or calendar widget to switch between them. This flexibility allows you to choose the information you want at a glance
  • Adding and removing widgets: Press and hold on either widget to add or remove widgets, enhancing your StandBy experience
  • Exploring different views: Swipe from right to left on the initial StandBy view to access alternative views. Each view offers distinct customizable elements, allowing you to curate your display
  • Settings menu: StandBy supports Live Activities, Siri, incoming calls, and larger notifications. You can fine-tune its behavior by heading to Settings > StandBy
  • Nighttime dimming: StandBy is considerate of your sleep schedule. It remembers your "preferred view" and dims to a soothing red hue at night to avoid disruptions

Apple released iOS 17.0.1 and iPadOS 17.0.1 updates for the iPhone and the iPad, adding bug fixes to the new software. The iOS 17.0.1 and iPadOS 17.0.1 updates come just a few days after Apple launched iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. There is a separate iOS 17.0.2 update (build 21A350) that will be available for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models.

Apple released iOS 17.0.2 and iPadOS 17.0.2 updates, with the software coming five days after the releases of iOS 17.0.1 and iPadOS 17.0.1.

Note that iOS 17.0.2 was previously made available for iPhone 15 owners, and those who purchased an ‌iPhone 15‌ were prompted to install the update during the iPhone setup process.

Apple has now made iOS 17.0.2 available for all iPhones compatible with iOS 17 instead of limiting it to the ‌iPhone 15‌, but ‌iPhone 15‌ users already have the software and will not see the update.
