Recently Windows 7 became the number one operating system on desktops. There are many sources that present Windows 7 as the market leading system ahead of Windows XP. Other sources, however, still present Windows XP as the most used operating system on desktops. In any case, Windows 7 is more and more popular choice for desktop users and it is the right time for us to react to this evolution.

For quite a long time we have been testing security products in our Proactive Security Challenge project on 32-bit Windows XP platform. In the next couple of weeks we will upgrade to a new platform – 64-bit Windows 7. The Security Software Testing Suite developed for Proactive Security Challenge attempted to exploit every possible feature of Windows XP operating system in order to bypass the protection implemented by security products. Since then the Windows operating system core has improved a lot and Windows 7 mitigates many of Windows XP features that could serve as easy targets for malware writers. If we wanted to upgrade to a new platform we had to follow these improvements. This is why we have developed a completely new testing suite that we call Security Software Testing Suite 64.

The code of Security Software Testing Suite 64 has been completely redesigned. It fully supports Unicode and all its tests run on 64-bit Windows 7 platform. Many of the tests were removed because their techniques were not compatible with the new platform, other tests were improved, and of course some of the tests and techniques are completely new. Having the new suite is the first step of our upgrade process. The current Proactive Security Challenge will be replaced with Proactive Security Challenge 64 very soon.

This upgrade will again raise the bar for security software vendors. Due to the nature of 64-bit Windows operating system some protection methods used by security software vendors on the 32-bit platform are no longer valid on the 64-bit platform. It can be said that if a product is able to protect against some kind of malware technique on the 64-bit platform it is likely that the product will be effective against this attacking technique on the 32-bit platform too, but not vice versa. This is why the results of the new tests on 64-bit Windows 7 will be much more valuable to the consumers than the old ones. And if we also consider that there are many new and previously unseen techniques implemented in the new suite, it will be pretty hard to succeed for the security software vendors in our new challenge.

That will be interesting on how products would perform well in x64 system. As it may vary the result for x64 to x86.

Very nice, we all know 64-bit is the way forward and is slowly getting more and more users. Be interesting also to see how 32-64 compare as am sure not all with peform the same, be handy for devs to work on their weak areas if exposed.

Oh ESET and specially Panda are busted....

but we need to remember that Matousec focus on the firewalls and HIPS/BB; unless they changed.
