Neeva.xyz (Experimental Web3 search)
A small team of five at Neeva began working on neeva.xyz. Since then, we have stood up nodes in multiple blockchains, extracted data from them, combined that with off-chain data from IPFS and the web, created data processing pipelines, and used our search serving stack to deliver a new experience on neeva.xyz. We created this system from scratch with our own code and systems to end up with an experience that is literally faster than the blink of an eye! We currently support NFTs on Ethereum, but are hoping to bring on Polygon, Avalanche and Solana in the coming weeks.

Thank you, this is the first search that actually finds, what I am looking for. DDG disappointed me, Brave hardly found anything, so I moved to swisscows, but it has some strange policies.

Search engine Neeva announced today that it launched officially in the three European countries Germany, France and the United Kingdom.
Users from Germany, France and the United Kingdom get local search results for certain search topics, including stocks, weather, restaurants and more. French and German language versions of the interface are available as well.

Neeva uses its own index and Bing to deliver search results to users. The service supports image, video, news and maps searches, and search suggestions.

The search engine stores a "limited amount of information" about its users to "make the product better" for the individual user, according to the service's FAQ. The information is deleted after 90 days by default.

NeevaAI is the latest feature of the search engine. It is currently only available in the United States for Neeva account holders, free or paid. Anyone can change the language and region to the U.S. to make use of the feature right away; a VPN connection or other forms of bypasses are not required.

NeevaAI analyzes the user's query and produces a single answer that summarizes content from the "most relevant sites to a query". Unlike ChatGPT, which does not reveal sources, NeevaAI cites the sources that it used to create the response to the user's query.

Another important difference between NeevaAI and ChatGPT is that NeevaAI has access to recent information. If you used ChatGPT, you know that its database is limited to information from 2021 and before.

A NeevaAI result is displayed at the top of the search results page when a user makes a search using the search engine. There is a short delay before the result is displayed.

The AI produced result is a paragraph long usually, but sometimes longer, and contains information from one or multiple sources. The example given on the screenshot at the top lists two sources for the query.

Neeva, a search engine company that was founded in 2019 by a former executive at Google, announced on Saturday it is shutting down the search engine part of the business. It will instead concentrate its efforts on developing AI and large language models (LLMs).

In a blog post, the company stated it discovered that it was difficult to make a new search engine with just 50 team members. It stated:

We overcame these obstacles and built a search stack from the ground up, running a crawl that fetched petabytes of information from the web and used that to power an independent search stack.

Neeva decided not to use ads for its search engine, unlike Google's business model. This is ironic because the person who founded Neeva, Sridhar Ramaswamy, was previously Google's senior vice president of advertising and commerce.

Instead, Neeva used a subscription model to fund development, which cost $5.99 a month or $49.99 for an annual plan. For that price you could use its search browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and others, along with iOS and Android apps. The subscription also threw in a password manager and a VPN with that plan.

Neeva officially launched in 2021 in the US and expanded to other countries in 2022. In January 2023, the company launched NeevaAI, which beat Google's Bard and Microsoft's Bing Chat to the punch by offering AI answers to search questions. It expanded to other countries in February just as Bard was announced and Bing Chat launched.

However, it would appear that wasn't enough to keep Neeva's search business going. This weekend's blog post stated:

Contrary to popular belief, convincing users to pay for a better experience was actually a less difficult problem compared to getting them to try a new search engine in the first place.

Neeva will shut down its consumer search engine in the coming weeks, along with the Neeva.com site. All of its user data will be deleted, and people who signed up for Neeva Premium will receive a refund. More information has been posted on an FAQ page.

The first search with AI actually, months before others jumped the train. What a shame. :(
It had really good results, I bet Google paid for it's retirement. It was a serious competition.
