🙋🏻‍♂️Hi my friends from the MalwareTips forum!

I was taking a look at the ESET forum and I could see that a new protection feature called LiveGuard is in the development/implementation phase. LiveGuard is a feature that adds a cloud-based layer of protection specifically designed to mitigate emerging threats.

Below is a screenshot of what happens if you try to run new malware extracted from a file (credits to Marcos from the ESET forum)

What do you think about this new feature that will be available soon?

How well secured are the servers where our unknown files are uploaded to without our knowledge?
You are informed whenever files are uploaded. The feature is only available in Smart Security Premium and can be turned off if desired. The notification of when files are sent can also be turned off as well in the usual Eset Customizability if the user chooses to.

LiveGuard is an exclusive feature of ESET Smart Security Premium, which is VERY expensive.
I'm surprised by this, it's very disappointing tbh. People are paying for a security product and not even getting a essential security feature if they don't get the most expensive product available. With excellent free AV software available this is just stupid.

This is similar to Avast's (and AVG) CyberCapture feature which is available even in the free version. The difference is that cybercapture is dependent on the Mark of the Web similar to Microsoft's Block at First Sight feature while it seems with ESET it's for every file that is not known to ESET. So that's an advantage. This is a nice feature, a very good addition but as @Anthony Qian said above, it's exclusive to ESSP which is ridiculously expensive. So I can't really justify their decision to not include it in the Internet Security version.
Another point that should be noted is that no cloud sandbox is perfect. So there's gonna be plenty of cases where LiveGuard will deem a file not malicious while that file will end up infecting a real system or the opposite when it marks a safe file as malicious.
So anyone willingly running a suspicious file shouldn't blindly rely on it either.

It dose seem a bit werid to not include it its other product like internet security, if Eset had a free version which they don't it would be acceptable to not add it to that.

I do like Eset used it in the past light and got decent signatures, in my country out of all the major anti-virus vendors Eset is the most expensive it's cheaper to pick up a 2 years Kaspersky Total Security 10 devices off Amazon then buying a one device Eset internet Security, not sure what the pricing is like elsewhere but I got a feeling Eset IS is the expensive option in most areas so seem a bit of a joke to extract more cash to upgrade the premium version to get that feature.

I think this feature puts Eset Smart Security Premium somewhere very close to the first tier antiviruses, given that Eset's signature engine is very good on its own. So, the fact that they added this feature is very cool. But, I agree that ESSP is too expensive for the features it offers. I'm not a big fan of antiviruses with extra features, but for that kind of money I would probably expect an antivirus to provide me with a dozen extra features besides protection.

Nevertheless, there are still opportunities to find a key somewhere on the Internet or to buy one inexpensively and ESSP will definitely become a much more powerful product after this update. And I think that the overall responsiveness to new threats and the level of protection may increase as the cloud gets new client machines to get the newest samples, but we have to wait for the release and new tests.

By the way, it seems to me that Eset has a very modest infrastructure in terms of servers, as I see almost all of Eurasia connect to servers in Slovakia for updates and reputation data. This could be the reason why they don't want to give the cloud to everyone and set the price so high for it. But why is it so bad with the infrastructure? It seems that Eset's business strategy is going a bit the wrong way. Because the company definitely has money, considering that its owners are some of the richest people in Slovakia.

ESET has update servers both in the US and Europe. Users from Europe may download from the US servers if those in Europe are under a load and vice-versa.
As for repositories with installers and program updates, we use CDN by default so users should download from the nearest CDN.
As for EDTD/LG servers, those are located both in Europe and US, however, files are submitted to and replicated at ESET HQ in Slovakia. They are not kept outside of ESET HQ.
Hope this makes it clear.

ESET's servers or things related to that still has problems. ESET has the slowest download speed of any AV in my experience. After installing from the 50+ MB installer, ESET downloads around 150+ MB data. For me it always takes 10-15 mins to download this, while based on my internet speed it should take less than a minute. For a couple of years I thought I'm the only one, but I've seen complaints from other users also. Even from some European users who have much better internet speed than mine. Even the hourly signature download speed is super slow, but thankfully ESET's signature updates are only a few kilobytes, so no issue occurs there.
Some other products like Avast, Avira, Emsisoft, F-Secure, Microsoft Defender and some others are always able to use the full bandwidth.
