Next-Gen Xbox One Leaks + Updates

durangoarq1.jpg

Get out the salt and put on your skeptical hat as next gen specs for Microsoft's follow-up to the Xbox 360 have reportedly leaked. While the source does not have a track record of a significant length, the source has been posting up incredibly detailed posts regarding the WiiU, next gen Xbox and the PS4.

The specs are posted below but the highlights include an 8 core X64 CPU running at 1.6Ghz, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, USB 3.0, and a 50 GB 6x Blu-ray Disc drive.

CPU:

x64 Architecture
8 CPU cores running at 1.6 gigahertz (GHz)
each CPU thread has its own 32 KB L1 instruction cache and 32 KB L1 data cache
each module of four CPU cores has a 2 MB L2 cache resulting in a total of 4 MB of L2 cache
each core has one fully independent hardware thread with no shared execution resources
each hardware thread can issue two instructions per clock

GPU:

custom D3D11.1 class 800-MHz graphics processor
12 shader cores providing a total of 768 threads
each thread can perform one scalar multiplication and addition operation (MADD) per clock cycle
at peak performance, the GPU can effectively issue 1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second

High-fidelity Natural User Interface (NUI) sensor is always present

Storage and Memory:

8 gigabyte (GB) of RAM DDR3 (68 GB/s)
32 MB of fast embedded SRAM (ESRAM) (102 GB/s)
from the GPU’s perspective the bandwidths of system memory and ESRAM are parallel providing combined peak bandwidth of 170 GB/sec.
Hard drive is always present
50 GB 6x Blu-ray Disc drive

Networking:

Gigabit Ethernet
Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct
Hardware Accelerators:

Move engines
Image, video, and audio codecs
Kinect multichannel echo cancellation (MEC) hardware
Cryptography engines for encryption and decryption, and hashing

It looks like, if true, Microsoft is putting some serious hardware under the hood to make sure its next gen console performs during its life-cycle as well as the Xbox 360 has.

The inclusion of a NUI sensor would make it seem that Kinect will be baked in at a deep level and we should expect to see the next generation of the device debut during the lifecycle of the platform.

Seeing as the sensor will be built in, and not an add-on, would make it appear that next gen gaming will also be able to take advantage of the platform since all end-users will have access to the necessary equipment. At the current time, Kinect gaming is limited in scope because publishers are not guaranteed that the install base they are selling to will have the needed attachment.

Not that it will be a surprise, but to see that Wi-Fi will be baked in this time around will appease many. When the Xbox 360 hit the store shelves, it required an adapter to be able to connect to wireless networks. The addition of gigabit networking is also a nice touch for those who want to stream photos and videos to the console.

Finally, the HDMI-in is a bit of a mystery as well. Could it be for set-top box functionality or does Microsoft have DVR functionality in mind? At this point, it's up for interpretation.

Microsoft is expected to unveil the next gen Xbox sometime in the first half of 2013. Some reports suggest a March timeline while others point to a June announcement

RE: Next gen Xbox specs reportedly leak

The specs look interesting. If indeed it will feature such hardware capabilities, this means console games will be better in terms of performance and visual graphics, thus resulting better PC Ports, since as we know, PC Ports of Console games are subpar to PC Only games, in terms of Performance, Visual Graphics and core mechanics.

What's looking promising is that both Microsoft and Sony look to be going with Hardware which is more easy to code for. As Sony designed their CPU and GPU from the ground up it was a big challenge for developers to get the most out of the system in the early stages. They both look to be going with "off the shelf" components to a certain extent, which will make games a lot easier for developers to port over to different systems, including PC.

EA exec: It's unlikely 'next Xbox' will play Xbox 360 games

Neowin.net said:

Microsoft's Xbox 360 console can play some, but not all, of the games made for the original Xbox via software emulation. However, an executive for Electronic Arts now claims that we should not expect Xbox 360 games to run on the next version of the console, nor should owners of the next Playstation expect to play PS3 games on that machine.

I think it would be a very bad move not to have some backwards compatibility.

Bump. Tomorrow is the event for the #XboxReveal.

I'm eager to see what they have in-store, they've been ever so hush about it all.

What did you think of the Xbox One?
I noticed a lot of Kinect / TV / IE / Skype integration with Xbox Live, what do you think?

RE: Next gen Xbox 720 specs reportedly leak + Updates

Very impressive. It's more like a whole entertainment system than just a console. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Playstation 4 unveiled on the 10th of June, I can then make the decision of which one I'm going for.

RE: Next gen Xbox 720 specs reportedly leak + Updates

Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 were entertainment consoles, but this year with the advancements in technology, Xbox One looks more of an entertainment system than games console. Not sure I like the Windows kernal logo with the Xbox, watch out you might get a virus .. (joke).

I wonder what the 15 exclusive titles are..

Other than that, the Call of Duty Ghosts premier was exciting, new engine, new story and inclusion of dogs.

I found a complete review here:

Xbox One allows Offline Play and Trade-In's

More Info: Your Feedback Matters - Update on Xbox One

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

  • An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
  • Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

RE: Xbox One allows Offline Play and Trade-In's

Source: Xbox One pricing "too high" says business author

The PlayStation 4 launches this holiday at $400.

Mohammed said every Xbox One coming bundled with a Kinect 2.0 sensor is a benefit over the PS4, where users must pay $60 for the peripheral. Still, he said he believes Microsoft can decrease the Xbox One's price by making Kinect an accessory, similar to the scenario for Xbox 360 users.

This is unlikely to happen, according to past comments from Microsoft designers, who have positioned the device as an integral component of the Xbox One. Microsoft has also said that it has no plans to revisit Xbox One pricing.

Xbox One: Family Sharing could return

Read: Xbox One: family sharing feature could return, says Microsoft

Petition: Microsoft: Give us back the Xbox One we were promised at E3

Microsoft is planning to reinstate key digital features of the Xbox One console, a senior executive has claimed. In an interview with US game site IGN, chief product officer Marc Whitten hinted that the promising "Family Sharing" feature, which would allow Xbox One owners to share their digital games with up to 10 friends, could make a return after the machine's launch.

The concept was removed in June when Microsoft reversed on its initial plans to make the new console effectively a digital-first machine, complete with daily user authentication and a limit on physical used-game sales. Since then, however, insiders have been questioning Microsoft's decision to throw out all of its new digital features. An online petition has been started by Xbox fans, requesting that the company reverts to its original plan – especially the "Family Sharing" mode.

What happens if your family is bigger than 10 people? They didn't think of that, ha!
