Nintendo's NX console is rumored to release in 2016, and it faces stiff competition from Sony's PS4 and Microsoft's Xbox One. If the elder hardware maker aims to squash its foes, here are five speculated specs and features that must be real.

1) A Retro Game Subscription Service
Reports of the NX possibly supporting a subscription service appeared in a leaked GFK survey at the end of last month. The company is a known client of Nintendo's, so the story behind those details holds some water. Specifically, the service is said to cycle in new games six to eight months after release and is a mentioned form of backwards compatibility.

For a company like Nintendo that has such a long history of excellent software, a game subscription service seems like a no-brainer. Many gamers already appreciate the value of PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live, but imagine if that money paid towards a catalog of classic and current Mario and Zelda titles? Sony has tried to capitalize on a similar sense of nostalgia with its game streaming service called PlayStation Now, but a Nintendo variant of that would destroy all copycats in its path.

2) A Portable Component
As far as rumor reports are concerned, it seems like the industry is nearly positive that the Nintendo NX will have some sort of portable component. Respected analysts and insiders have been making similar claims for months, so it seems like a certainty at this point.

Should that be the case, the Nintendo NX has the potential to offer an all-encompassing gaming experience that PS4 and Xbox One cannot. The former lets players stream console games to a PlayStation Vita using Remote Play, but that requires the separate purchase of a product that's largely failed at retail. Hypothetically, NX could be boxed with a portable component alongside the console itself. That means everyone that owns one can take their games anywhere. At face value, the big guns can't top that.

3) The Best Exclusives
Exclusive games aren't exactly a hardware highlight, but they've been a major feature of Nintendo products for decades. Even though PS4 and Xbox One have their own stable of unique experiences, there's nothing that tops the might of "The Legend Of Zelda," "Super Smash Bros." and "Super Mario Galaxy." Nintendo's IP may not be mature, but it's still some of the most fun and polished stuff in the business.

Never cared much about hardware with Nintendo. It was more about a single title, "Metroid" :p

The problem with Nintendo is not the hardware, but the limited games, and for every new machines , you still got the same childish idiotic games over and over...

(ex-video game seller talking :D )

Well your handhelds are great and I've greatly enjoyed my time playing games like this: Hotel Dusk: Room 215 for Nintendo DS - Nintendo Game Details

But regardless of what you offer on your consoles, your games are limited and interest me not... I'll keep going with my Xbox. Features I use/want, games selection is great, service is cheap (worth every penny) and very reliable.

Long story short, I enjoy gaming on my Xbox and PC (mostly Steam for PC games) and need no more than that. Although I need to eventually (when I have money to throw around) get a better computer. Too many RTS games going unplayed...
