The National Security Agency (NSA) has announced its intention to create a cybersecurity directorate this fall in a bid to defend the U.S. against foreign adversaries. It comes at a time of increasing election interference by foreign nations such as Russia as part of an ongoing strategy to destabilize the West.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the move forms part of a wider effort to more closely align the agency’s offensive and defensive operations. The NSA said via Twitter: “Start spreading the news, #NSA is operationalizing intelligence to secure the country.”

It is expected the NSA’s cybersecurity directorate, which will become operational on October 1, will be headed up by Anne Neuberger who already has a lead role at the U.S. intelligence agency.

US Elections are generally secure because everything is decentralized, and the technologies range from pen and paper, to old tabulating machines, and everything in between and beyond. An adversary would more likely work to target individual locations for influence rather than the system as a whole, and this would require boots on the ground in many cases.

The way to secure our elections isn't to put it all under one federal control mechanism. That's the way to corrupt and steal elections. The way to secure it is to require specific security minimums across the board and audit all of them on a regular basis.

Anything on the internet needs to be behind a properly licensed, configured, locked down UTM appliance with appropriate ferrite chokes and gas chamber RJ45 couplers and on an Isolation Transformer to pull it from direct 60Hz connection. Same with the election machines themselves, they SHOULD NOT be plugged into standard 60Hz circuit without an ferrite choked isolation transformer in front of it.

There are other things as well, but the general idea is - federal control would be bad. Federal requirements, standards and security audits would be good. Having fossils in some of these districts running out elections is a hideous idea.

This is a strange move by NSA.

NSA used to have this mission.

Then CYBERCOM (Cyber Command) was created and given this mission.

NSA and CYBERCOM are even colocated.

CYBERCOM is now a large organization. There are military service elements of CYBERCOM that are also large... so ARCYBER (Army Cyber), AFCYBER (Air Force Cyber)..

I'll be interested to see if NSAs territory grab ends up intact.

This is a strange move by NSA.

nsa was given lead authority on information assurance with the intent that a complete cybersecrutiy mission must include siginit and led by an overseer agency

dod branch commands are now subordinate to nsa when it comes to domestic cybersec
cybercom was split from nsa by congress back in 2016 with the objective that cybercom would stick to military and space whereas nsa was clearly patterned after uk gchq cybersec division
all part of a plan initiated back in 2014
