Microsoft’s Windows 10 was just globally launched by the software giant just a couple of weeks back. With Windows 10 came an entire new look and it also saw the return of the Start Menu, coupled with Microsoft’s virtual assistant, Cortana. But today we’ve learned that Windows 10 might not be as smooth as an experience for everyone, and reportedly it doesn’t bode well with Alienware laptops either.

Several Alienware Notebooks Affected By Windows 10 Through Malfunctioning LCDs

When Mr. Fox, an avid poster on Nvidia’s GeForce forums decided to upgrade to Windows 10, he thought that it would all proceed rather smoothly. After all, Microsoft’s latest and greatest Windows operating system should help in notebooks running efficiently and without any problems – even though the update is in its starting stages as of now.

But when the user mentioned above started towards the upgrade through his Alienware M18xR2, within 24 hours of the installation, the laptop failed to post and died with 8 beeps. Tests on the GPU and LVDs cable were all right, and so he decided to switch the screen from his M18xR1 to the R2, since they both come with identical display panels. While things seemed to go right for a while, the replaced display panel on the M18xR2 also ended up worthless.

On his third Alienware machine, the Alienware 18, Mr. Fox also experienced similar problems. The Alienware 18 comes with Nvidia’s GTX 780M SLI on board, and after the Windows 10 upgrade, Mr. Fox ran Intel HD Graphics for a while. But as soon as he switched to the GTX 780M and downloaded the 353.63 display drivers for Windows 10, within two hours the Alienware 18 made a clicking sound and shut itself off.

It would be relevant to note that any damage caused to the notebook’s display as a result of this malfunction is permanent, as Mr. Fox found out. Putting the damaged display into the Alienware M18xR1 doesn’t cause it to turn back on, even though that notebook comes only with Intel HD on board. The problem, at this stage gets narrowed down to either a Windows 10 upgrade or the 353.63 display driver upgrade.

So if you own an Alienware notebook and have faced similar issues in the past, do let us know in the comments section below. We’ll keep you updated in the meanwhile. Alienware has contacted Mr. Fox for information officially so lets see how this develops. Cheers.
