Advice Request Optimal Settings for ESET

I would like to know what would be the best settings for ESET Smart Security. I've tried their trial version many times before but it always confuses me, like having to choose or add a profile within the settings. I would preferably like settings to where I get great protection but also not too complicated if I had to make a choice in the matter, like HIPS and potentially messing up my system. As of right now I am using Emsisoft, this is my second year and I've grown tired of it. The big updates and high disk usage doesn't do a thing but slow my Windows 8.1 system down and at times it can take 3 minutes or more to download and install the updates. I've tried Kaspersky as well but I don't like how it has to load first before it opens whenever I turn my system on, it makes me feel like I'm not fully protected. I don't like having to wait on a program that doesn't load up as soon as I log on, Emsisoft is also bad to not load File Guard right away. I do commend Emsisoft on their support and respect for your privacy though, always eager to respond to your questions and always ready to help you. If you have any other recommendations between these three (ideally paid products) please let me know.

I tried all three.
Currently in use:
Emsisoft IS and AM on 5/6 comp.
CIS for testing config purposes.

Previously tried and used:
ESS (unable to run my browser, as it blocks the network, lazy to tweak those settings for my family comp.)
Kaspersky (good, but heavy, I only use their AV, IS is way too heavy for me at that time)

Seems both of us have different set of complication.

PS: you may want to introduce about yourself so we know you better. Also try to create a thread on what programs and systems you're currently using so that we know how we can better assist you.

emsisoft in a daily basis (and if you are not using a methered plan) you can go well with downloads, please keep in mind that bitdefender databae is the one who makes updates heavy, if you take concern about disk usage you can delay the updates to hours that your pc is idle.
As for eset well it depends the type of user you are, since even tho eset lack zero day protection at default with HIPS you can create a fortress if you ask me, if you like simplicity then stick to emsisoft, they have what only you need (for HDD problems, please try to defrag your system)

Yes. HIPS is not for faint-hearted.

@Umbra you are being too kind. I however ran and always run Policy based mode hips when using ESET for a full system lockdown (similar achievement as appguard etc).

In any case, ill be gladly to help if need be.

I will however need to know a few things: is the system being used by yourself or shared? how is your browsing habits? do you actively visit sites that are full of adds etc (and don't have an adblock extection)?

By default, eset settings are fine, the only thing you want to tweak (granted you are running a clean system) is set HIPS to learning mode for 7 days, use the system as normal + do windows updates etc. Then, switch hips to Smart Mode.

Firewall wise, pretty much same concept but switch to automatic mode.

On scanners: I choose not to clean. I prefer granular control. Rest default is as good as.

Seem like you I use Eset one of them because it's light for update. But virus signature is rare to update. So, Now i decide to use Emsisoft AM.
I feel EAM is good although it's need more size update database. One time, I report malicious or phishing, update EAM database immediately I see. Sometime the database update is light too

i wont be able to do so I am afraid. I have custom rules specific for my system when it comes to HIPS as I use Policy Based mode.

best to follow the guidelines above mentioned. Does not take long to set up.

@restuwt: Usually the main configuration for ESET is HIPS cause on other cases it can run very well at factory settings as the concept are on the prevention status and works already invisibly.

Well I guess you could call it a shared computer, I bought it for my mom as a Christmas present in 2014 so its only a year old. I check up on it every now and then to make sure nothing is on the system (I'm not a professional). Its a Dell Inspiron 7737, it has a 4th Generation Intel Core i5-4 210U processor and 8GB of RAM running Windows 8.1. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 17R N7110, it has a 2nd generation Intel Core i7-2 630QM processor with 8GB of RAM as well running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Well she mainly has a routine and doesn't go to unknown sites, she mainly checks her email and does a little shopping online. She uses Internet Explorer and I have Adblock Plus installed for it, I should have jumped on the offer Emsisoft had for Adguard when I renewed it.

I'm just not sure about using ESET's HIPS, even when Emsisoft's Behavior Blocker pops up at times I'm not sure what to do, unless its a file I am absolutely sure that's already on the system and I know that its safe then I'll allow it but it just doesn't supply enough information to make a wise decision.

@ofbeautyandrage: Well ESET HIPS and Emsisoft BB are totally design to be user decision which why a least of information can provide and much possible to prevent any erroneous detection that rely on cloud so instead they are implementing that component to be smart enough that only unknown programs should detect and check by users approval.

Supervision is a must for a user who are novice.

ESET is basically install and forget, apart from one thing: set hips to learning mode and when it expires, you will be notified and you can choose to go Smart mode.

Emsisoft is pretty much the same but you will get a few more alerts than ESET based on my experience.

After installation, I enable "Enable detection of potentially unsafe applications" and "Advanced Heuristic" (ThreatSense parameters) and Update Settings, Pre-Release Update option instead Basic. HIPS in Smart Mode

I would preferably like one that's a little less chatty and doesn't rely on me all the time to make the decision for it. That's most likely not possible from what's been stated here before, I do get prompts from Emsisoft but not very many, its more of an annoyance than anything because it can't decipher if Dell Support is safe or not when it updates from time to time.

Also what would be stable as of right now, version 8 or 9? I haven't heard too many good things about their latest version.

When I posted the specs about our computers, I hope it doesn't compromise or reveal any sensitive information since this a public forum. Am I just being paranoid?

Do you have problems with high disk usage when it updates? On 8.1 it can take 3 minutes or more to download and install, I've had it to simultaneously download updates with 10 connections, changed it to 5 and it didn't make much of a difference. On my Windows 7 computer, it doesn't have this problem, it will download all updates within a few seconds.
