Unpaid licenses for the use of patents relating to the H.264 video codec are fatal for Lenovo: Due to an injunction obtained by Nokia, Lenovo must reduce sales in Germany to a minimum. The manufacturer is currently no longer allowed to sell any devices with a graphics card or graphics unit.

Lenovo draws attention to the limited range on its own website. Accessories are still available, such as mice and docking stations. Desktop PCs, notebooks, tablets and smartphones can no longer be ordered from the official store. Other retailers continue to sell their inventory but appear to be banned from re-ordering affected products.

Unfair terms

Like the industry service Bloomberg reports, Nokia accuses the world’s largest PC manufacturer Lenovo for not having submitted reasonable offers for licenses to use its own H.264 patents. Lenovo disagrees that Nokia charges unfairly high fees and does not negotiate according to the so-called FRAND model (Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory).

By stopping sales, the court wants to force both companies to come to one table so that they can negotiate a license agreement.

Setback for Nokia in German patent battle with Lenovo:

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German appeals court on Monday lifted the enforcement of an injunction won by Nokia Oyj NOKIA.HE in a patent dispute with Lenovo Group Ltd 0992.HK to block the world's largest PC maker from selling its products in Europe's largest economy.
