If you own a version of the popular e-reader, the Amazon Kindle, which was released before 2013, you will soon wake up with the realization that you can no longer connect to online services. All devices up to and including the fifth-generation model will require an update by today, March 22, 2016.

Failing to update will result in this message being shown: "Your Kindle is unable to connect at this time. Please make sure you are within wireless range and try again. If the problem persists, please restart your Kindle from the Menu in Settings and try again." If this message is shown, you must manually install the software update via USB via the relevant page for your Kindle device.

Alternatively, if you do not see the message, the update can be installed via your personal Wi-Fi or the Kindle's own wireless connection. Before you update the device, only content already stored or downloaded onto the device will be able to be viewed. Access to the Cloud, the Kindle Store and other online Kindle services will be inaccessible until the update is installed.
