Screen clips are coming to the Action Center in Windows 10

If you've ever used Windows 10 and thought to yourself that there just aren't enough ways to take screenshots, you're in luck. A new screen clip feature is coming to the Action Center, as shown in Windows 10 build 17639 by Thurrott's Rafael Rivera. The feature isn't widely available to anyone running the build yet though, so we'll likely see it in an upcoming Redstone 5 build.

The way it works is pretty similar to the Snipping Tool or the Win-Shift-S shortcut that currently allows you to take screen clips. When you click on the item in the Action Center, you'll be given options for what kind of clip you want, such as rectangular or free-form, and then you'll draw your clip.

According to Rafael's report, there's no option to save the image to the disk, but it's automatically saved in the shell experience host's temporary folder. Presumably, this will change at some point, once the feature becomes public.

One thing that would make a lot of sense here is for screen clips to be integrated with the upcoming Cloud Clipboard feature, so you'd be able to take a screenshot and easily access it from other devices. There's no indication that that's currently the case right now; however, there is also potential for it to integrate with Cortana Insights, so it will probably be able to recognize text from the image and make it searchable based on that and other information.

Rafael didn't share how he was able to unlock the feature in Windows 10 build 17639, although you'll be able to find references to it in the Registry if you're not afraid to mess around in there. If you do, it's strongly recommended that you use caution. The rest of us will just have to wait until Microsoft makes this feature official in an upcoming build.
