Hi everyone,

1). Have you ever been infected by a Rogue Antivirus?
2). If so, do you remember which Rogue Antivirus it was? e.g. Defender Pro 2015, or even if you just remember it being a "fake Windows Defender clone" this will do. If you do not recommend, put "N/A".
3). Do you remember how long ago the infection was?
4). Did you use a product to remove it or get Malware Removal Assistance to have it cleaned? e.g. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Earlier I was wondering about how malware writers could have tried making a real Antivirus instead of a fake one, allowing them to make a real business and help people instead of mess things up and waste their time. This wonder led me to the questions in this thread.

I'll start off:
1). Yes
2). Sadly not... N/A
3). Yes, the infection was about 4 or 5 years ago (so before I even had an interest in security, etc)
4). I used a product - it may have been Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (if so it would have been the first use I had attempted with MBAM)

Cheers. ;)

1) Yes
2) I consider Stopzilla as a Rogue AV/PUP
3) On year 2004 or 2005, it cause slowdown and crashed some certain legitimate application.
4) Attempted to remove with Norton AV 2004 as primary protection available (outdated updates w/o internet connection available before) but all sudden reformat is a resort option.

1. I think so. I was visiting a very innocent web page on a tourism-oriented website for some Italian town. All of a sudden I get this alarming message that portrays itself as from Windows to the effect that I have incurred some horrible virus infection. I naively clicked on it, and a monster took control of my computer. I could hardly do anything. I believe it was insisting I buy the product, but I didn't.
2. No.
3. Six to eight years ago. I had far less computer knowledge then.
4. I don't recall using a product. I called a computer-savvy friend for help. It seems I recall that giving up on closing my browser and just shutting down my computer with the power button rid me of it.
I later encountered that same rogue while surfing but I don't think I clicked on it the second time.
