SpyHunter suddenly stops scanning because of possible virus

I think my computer could be infected because, from around the 5th of September 2012 onwards, I began going through unexpected and unprogrammed sudden reboots. My usual protection tools (Kaspersky Internet Security 2011) did not detect any threat. So I installed SpyHunter 4.3.32.3239 and started a deep scan. But in the middle of the scanning process, SpyHunter always stops working. I always get this message: "Spyhunter 4 application has stopped working". I have tried scans on many different occasions, but it always stops working. Then I tried installing Kaspersky Internet Security 2012, but it doesn't works properly either, as after the first programmed reboot, it always deactivates itself again and again. It never begins working and continuously shows messages informing about unexpected deactivation of every function and protection system.

Could anybody please help me with this problem???

Thanks in advance.

Best regards from Spain,

Manu

Hi and welcome to the malwaretips.com forums!

I'm Jack and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:
  • I will start working on your malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Before we start:
Please be aware that removing malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
<hr />

Lets see what's going on ....Please follow the below steps:

STEP 1: Run a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in Chamelon mode

<ol>
<li>Download <>Malwarebytes Chameleon from <a title="External link" href="http://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/chameleon" rel="nofollow external">here</a> </>and extract it to a folder in a convenient location</li>
<li>Make certain that your PC is connected to the internet and then open the folder where you extracted Chameleon to and double-click on the Chameleon help file and then follow the onscreen instructions to use it.</li>
<li>If the Chameleon help file itself will not open, then double-click each file one by one until you find one that works, which will be indicated by a black DOS/command prompt window <em><>Note:</> Do not attempt to open <>mbam-killer</> as that is not a Chameleon executable and serves a different purpose)</em></li>
<li>Follow the onscreen instructions to press a key to continue and Chameleon will proceed to download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for yo</li>
<li>Once it has done this, it will attempt to update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, click <>OK</> when it says that the database was updated successful</li>
<li>Next, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will automatically open and perform a Quick scan</li>
<li>Upon completion of the scan, if anything has been detected, click on <>Show Result</></li>
<li>Have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware remove any threats that are detected and click <>Yes</> if prompted to reboot your computer to allow the removal process to complete</li>
<li>After your computer restarts, open <>Malwarebytes Anti-Malware</> and perform a Full System scan to verify that there are no remaining threats</li>
Please add both logs in your next reply.
</ol>
STEP 2: Run a scan with RogueKiller
<ol>
<li>Please <>download the latest official version of </><>RogueKiller</>.
<a href="http://www.sur-la-toile.com/RogueKiller/RogueKiller.exe" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">RogueKiller Download Link</a> (This link will automatically download RogueKiller on your computer)</li>
<li><>Double click on RogueKiller.exe</> to start this utility and then <>wait for the Prescan to complete</>.This should take only a few seconds and then you can <>click the Start button</> to perform a system scan.
<img title="Click on the Start button to perform a system scan" src="http://malwaretips.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/roguek-1.png" alt="[Image: roguekiller-1.png]" width="600" height="450" border="0" /></li>
<li>After the scan has completed, <>press the Delete button</> to remove any malicious registry keys.

<li>Next we will need to restore your shortcuts, <>so click on the ShortcutsFix button </>and allow the program to run.
<img title="Click on the Start button to perform a system scan" src="http://malwaretips.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/roguek-3.png" alt="[Image: roguekiller-1.png]" width="600" height="450" border="0" /></li>

Read the WOT rating for enigmasoftware.com the maker of SpyHunter.

SpyHunter is considered to be malware itself.
I recommend uninstall SpyHunter and use a trusted scanner like Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware.

If Kaspersky was updated when you last scanned and it didn't find any malware then your issues might not be malware related.
You may have other problems causing the reboot problems.

Enjoy!!:D

Thanks a lot for your advice. I've taken your advice and have uninstalled SpyHunter. Now I'm trying Malwarebytes Antimalware, which seems to be great. I will probably buy it. Updated Kaspersky did not find any virus. I think my computer could now be fixed.

Manu

Hi Jack,

Thanks a lot for your answer. I've followed your instructions above closely. Malwarebytes didn't find any virus but RogueKiller found some tracks that I cannot understand. I attach the logs so you can have a look at them.

I installed Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 again and now it's working properly. It's fully active and didn't go through any problem at all. A deep thorough scan with Kaspersky hasn't found any virus either.

However, SpyHunter scanning continues to stop up unexpectedly in the middle of the process without giving me the chance to go on. I have never been able to complete a scan with SpyHunter. I hope you can help me with this. Do you think my computer my be still infected? Thanks a lot in advance.

Kind regards from Spain,

Manu

I thought you said that you uninstalled SpyHunter.
Anyway the most likely reason why SpyHunter will not complete a scan it Kaspersky Internet Security is blocking it.

Many AV's will detect SpyHunter as malware or just block functions.
If other scanners detected nothing then you should be malware free.
Forget about SpyHunter, it is a worthless scanner.

Good day.:D

Yes, I uninstalled SpyHunter. But before uninstalling it, I unsuccessfully tried to scan my computer, that is, the scan stopped unexpectedly as I've mentioned on other occasions. I should mention that Kaspersky was not installed when I tried SpyHunter as I uninstalled it to make sure it didn't block or interfere with SpyHunter. Anyway, now SpyHunter is not installed in my pc (I took your advice) and Kaspersky is working correctly. I think my computer is clean now. Thanks a lot.

Manu

You are probably not the first to have problems with SpyHunter.
It is a very crappy program from a scamming software vendor who just cares about taking your money instead of making a quality product.

SpyHunter will lists many false positives on their trial scan to get you to buy their product to remove malware that doesn't even exists on your system.

It is probably for the best that the scan never completed. ;)

They have earned their bad reputation on WOT.

Good day.:D

Thanks Littlebits. I won't use it any more. I have a question for you. My computer here at home seems to be clean now. But I have another computer at work which I'm pretty sure is badly infected. Can you also help me with this second computer??? If so, can I report my problem right here in this thread or should I begin a new one???

Kind regards,

Manu

It would probably be better to make a new thread since this problem is solved. Be sure to post as many details as you can and follow the advice that Jack posted on this thread. We will be glad to help you.

Good day.:D

Hi,
The same is happening to me too. Don't feel special, it is not your PC or anything; a virus is probably blocking Spyhunter from accessing its files from the registry. Usually, this happens on HKEY/Software/Internet Explorer/SearchScopes.
