Conventional wisdom has it that Windows and products from Microsoft are extremely unsafe, easy targets for hackers. That conventional wisdom is wrong, according to security firm Kaspersky Lab's recent quarterly malware report, which found not a single Microsoft-related threat in the top ten.

The Kapersky Lab quarterly report has this to say about Microsoft products:

For the very first time in its history, the top 10 rating of vulnerabilities includes products from just two companies: Adobe and Oracle (Java), with seven of those 10 vulnerabilities being found in Adobe Flash Player alone. Microsoft products have disappeared from this ranking due to improvements in the automatic Windows update mechanism and the growing proportion of users who have Windows 7 installed on their PCs.

So if you're running Windows --- especially Windows 7 --- you don't need to worry that you're a sitting duck.

Windows blogger Ed Bott notes that at the Black Hat conference, security expert Chris Paget praised Windows security as well. Paget was hired to find security holes in Vista before it shipped, as a way to make the OS safer. She called Microsoft's security "world-leading" and said:

"Microsoft's security process is spectacular."

Even before Windows isn't the most vulnerable since patches are easily patched from the OS.

Windows 7 is as secure as it's users 'asked' to be .....Microsoft could secure even further its operating system but this would mean, making it harder to use for everyone ....
I would like to remind you that almost all the Windows users run on a Administrator account or/and have disabled the UAC because it's ... (quote) : Too Annoying
Unlike Linux users , the majority of Windows user are security noobs , who in most cases jeopardize their OS through their own actions ; eg: not installing Windows updates, searching for warez.... )

It's fairly secure... the separation of user and admin isn't great and there could be a lot more work done but it's fair enough...

the problem is that your OS isn't all that often attacked, your most common attack vector will be one of those highly insecure products mentioned in that article like Java or Flash or Reader, all of which run on Windows.

I'm finding Windows 7 to be a secure OS, Much more secure than Windows XP, The Built-in Security tools and features are good enough to be used on its own Although it still needs an Antivirus, MSE is a good option from Microsoft.

You really don't need MSE to catch those bad files IE9 is like norton's detection reputation system of files.

Yes you can say that I don't need MSE but MSE is there to catch malware coming in from other sources.

the UAC, Win Firewall, Win Defender, and patchguard (for x64) onboard security are the big improvement of W7.

Then for the future of Windows 8, Smartfilter feature will be added which another great for security.
