Thunderbird's next milestone release will support Firefox Sync

Thunderbird 114: syncing support

Thunderbird 114 will be released next year, but work has already begun on adding important, and much requested, features to the email client. A much requested feature is data synchronization, and that is what Thunderbird will be getting in the upcoming release.

The team noted on Twitter:
We are thrilled to share that we've already reached an important development milestone for Thunderbird 114:
@Firefox Sync is up and running! ?
Email, Calendar, and Contact syncing works without issue during internal testing.
You'll never lose your Thunderbird profile again.

While emails may get synced already between clients, courtesy of how things are set up in Thunderbird and thanks to how email servers operate, other data may not be synced at this point.

The main idea behind introducing synchronization in Thunderbird is to improve setting up new Thunderbird installations and to make sure that cross-device Thunderbird installations use the same configuration and other data.

Imagine adding a user to a local address book in Thunderbird. Without Sync, you'd have to add the contact in every Thunderbird installation on the same device or other devices. Or take a newly created template, a new filtering rule, or modifications to Thunderbird settings. All of these are not synced at the moment, which means that users have to make the changes in every instance of Thunderbird they run.

With Sync in place, Thunderbird users have all changes synced across all their installations. New installs will pick up the settings automatically as well, provided that Sync is configured.

The team revealed already that some data will also be synced between desktop installations of the Thunderbird email client and Thunderbird for Android, which currently is still called K-9 Mail.

Thunderbird 114: the major changes

Here is the list of improvements that the Thunderbird development team plans to integrate in Thunderbird 114. While the team aims to deliver all the features in Thunderbird 114, it is possible that some may be postponed or dropped entirely.
  • Firefox Sync support -- Thunderbird is based on the same core as the Firefox browser. The introduction of syncing support via Firefox Sync allows users to sync email accounts, preferences, tags and filters between all desktop versions and the Android version.
  • Unified Toolbar -- A toolbar that is visible all the time in the application acting as a "simple interaction point for searching, interacting with the app menu and tab management".
  • App Menu -- A single menu that replaces the Hamburger-style menu.
  • Redesign of Mail tab -- Improve the mail tab with new features such as multi-line message list support and conversational threads.
  • Conversational View -- Thunderbird will see messages in a thread as conversations. Features of this view include collapsing and expanding individual messages. The view takes into account messages in all folders to unify them under a single view.
  • Global Message Index -- Conversation View needs to keep track of messages everywhere, and that means that Thunderbird needs a database that acts as an index of all messages.
  • 3Pane -- replaces XUL tree.
  • Drop Window -- unknown at this point.
  • Link Preview Card improvements -- will become "more useful and visually appealing".
  • Account Setup Hub -- Thunderbird 114 gets a central location to set up accounts, get new email addresses, import existing profiles, set up calendar, chat or feeds.
  • Customizable shortcuts.
  • Calendar UI -- unknown at this point.

How to set up end-to-end encryption for your e-mails in Mozilla's Thunderbird

In recent years, companies have been implementing various levels of encryption within their apps and services. ProtonMail offers encryption between its mail users, WhatsApp has encryption turned on by default, and Facebook Messenger lets you flip to more secure chats if you would like. While not the most straightforward to set up, Mozilla has tightly integrated PGP into its e-mail client Thunderbird, so you can encrypt e-mails, no matter your provider.

In this guide, I’ll go over:
  • How to set up your encryption keys
  • How to add your contact’s keys
  • How to share your own keys
  • How to upload your keys to a keyserver, so they can be found easily
  • How to backup your keys

I want to keep an offline copy of my Fastmail important emails. My emails are organised in folders using inbox filtering rules. Now if I link my Fastmail account to Thunderbird using Pop protocol, will all my folders be downloaded or just the Inbox folder?

Thunderbird 102.2.1 launches with important security fixes

The official security advisories page lists four different security issues that are patched in the new email client version. One issues is rated high, the other three are rated moderate.
  • CVE-2022-3033: Leaking of sensitive information when composing a response to an HTML email with a META refresh tag
  • CVE-2022-3032: Remote content specified in an HTML document that was nested inside an iframe's srcdoc attribute was not blocked
  • CVE-2022-3034: An iframe element in an HTML email could trigger a network request
  • CVE-2022-36059: Matrix SDK bundled with Thunderbird vulnerable to denial-of-service attack
The official release notes lists several non-security improvements and fixes in the email client. The only new feature in Thunderbird 102.2.1 is the -calendar startup parameter to load the Calendar on start of the email client.

The only change displays a button now during account setup to connect automatically discovered address books and calendars.

More than a dozen fixes are listed. They address a whole range of issues, including Pop email retrieval issues after network errors and recoveries, issues when exporting a profile, or issues when updating mail quota colors.
