Hi,

I am unable to access the internet on my PC. I can connect to my home broadband but when I try to surf the internet on IE or Firefox web browsers they both show a blank page and become unresponsive. I cannot update my Norton 360 AV as it keeps encountering an error.

SuperAntispyware scan results found 3 critical threats: -
Trojan.Agent.Gen
Backddor.bot[ZBot]
Malware.Trace

Tracking objects: -
Adaware.tracking cookie

I would appreciate it if you could advise me on how to get rid of these viruses and spyware and any issues on the registry of this PC.

Please can you let me know if you need more information from this PC or what steps you need me to do?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:
  • At the top of your post, please click on the "Watch thread" button and make sure to check Watch this thread...and receive email notifications. This will send an email to you as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing me to solve your problem faster.
  • Please do not install any new software during the cleaning process other than the tools I provide for you. This can hinder the cleaning process. Please do not perform System Restore or any other restore.
  • Instructions I give to you are very simple and made for complete beginner to follow. That's why you need to read through my instructions carefully and completely before executing them.
  • Please do not run any tools other than the ones I ask you to, when I ask you to. Some of these tools can be very dangerous if used improperly. Also, if you use a tool that I have not requested you use, it can cause false positives, thereby delaying the complete cleaning of your machine.
  • All tools we use here are completely clean and do not contain any malware. If your antivirus detects them as malicious, please disable your antivirus and then continue.
  • If during the process you run across anything that is not in my instructions, please stop and ask. If any tool is running too much time (few hours), please stop and inform me.
  • I visit forum several times at day, making sure to respond to everyone's topic as fast as possible. But bear in mind that I have private life like everyone and I cannot be here 24/7. So please be patient with me. Also, some infections require less, and some more time to be removed completely, so bear this in mind and be patient.
  • Please stay with me until the end of all steps and procedures and I declare your system clean. Just because there is a lack of symptoms does not indicate a clean machine. If you solved your problem yourself, set aside two minutes to let me know.
  • Please attach all report using
    fjqb1h.png
button below. Doing this, you make it easier for me to analyze and fix your problem.

  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

Windows XP end of support warning!

As 8th of April 2014 has passed, this Operating System is not longer supported by the Microsoft.
Any patches, updates or security releases are ceased for this System.
This is just an information for you if not aware.
My recommendation would be to start thinking about replacing it with some newer edition, like Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8.

When this started to happen?

Running it on another one may cause damage and render the system unstable.

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

  • Right-click on
    FRST.gif
    icon and select
    RunAsAdmin.jpg
Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • Press the Fix button just once and wait.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  • When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please attach it to your reply.

Hi TwinHeadedEagle,

Thanks for replying to my post.

This all started to happen about a week ago.

I was unable to run the fix as Admininstrator but the account I used has admininstrator access. The PC restarted afterwards.

Please find the Fixlog.txt attached.

Thanks for your help.

Kevin

I an access the internet now via IE, Firefox and Safari. IE takes about 12-14 seconds to open the MSN.com website. I think I will use Firefox as IE 8 is not supported and I can't install Google Chrome on this PC.
The computer is still slow to use but I think it is just an old PC.
I have installed all Windows XP Windows updates and ran a defrag on the C: drive as it was 16% fragmented.

Please can you let me know if there is any software I should uninstall, whether I should uninstall old versions of Java RE, whether to upgrade the memory, or anything else you would suggest to speed up this PC?

Spec of Desktop PC
OS: - Windows XP HE V 2002 SP3
CPU: - AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1.20 MHz
RAM: - 1.75 GB
HDD: 60 GB

Thanks,

Kevin

I don't think upgrading this configuration is good idea, it is just wasting of money. You should buy completely new PC, this is very, very old configuration, probably 10 years old. Feel free to ask anything.

Hi TwinHeadedEagle,

I agree it is a waste of money to upgrade this PC.

I am unable to uninstall old versions of Java on this PC by using the Java uninstall tool on the web as I get Error code 1618 I think this is due to a incomplete registry setting to do with uninstalls. I have the details of the juninstall_log it creates below: - Please can you let me know how I can install these older versions of Java? Would you suggest I use an uninstall program like Revo Uninstaller Pro?: -

Hi TwinHeadedEagle,

How are you?

Thank you for your advise on removing old versions of Java.

I have had a boot error a couple of times on this XP PC. The PC boots up to the BIOS page and gets stuck 'Checking NVRAM'. I think this might be a problem with the CMOS or registry. I can get past it by doing a forced shut down a couple of times but I know that not a good thing to keep doing if it happens again. The only change I have made to the PC is install a 10/100baseT network card and driver. Please can you advise me on what I can do to resolve this issue?

Also please can you let me know how I change my profile name on this Malware tip website? I have been into preferences and contact details.

Thanks,

Kevin
