NVIDIA is purposely crippling the Ethereum mining power of their upcoming GeForce RTX 3060 GPU by 50% to increase inventory for gamers.

Today, NVIDIA announced the upcoming launch of the GeForce RTX 3060 on February 25th for $329, and has made a drastic step to make sure miners do not steal all of the released inventory.

Instead of allowing the GPU to be used for any purpose, the RTX 3060 drivers will purposely reduce performance by 50% when it detects the card used for Ethereum cryptocurrency mining.

"With the launch of GeForce RTX 3060 on Feb. 25, we’re taking an important step to help ensure GeForce GPUs end up in the hands of gamers."

"RTX 3060 software drivers are designed to detect specific attributes of the Ethereum cryptocurrency mining algorithm, and limit the hash rate, or cryptocurrency mining efficiency, by around 50 percent."

"That only makes sense. Our GeForce RTX GPUs introduce cutting-edge technologies — such as RTX real-time ray-tracing, DLSS AI-accelerated image upscaling technology, Reflex super-fast response rendering for the best system latency, and many more — tailored to meet the needs of gamers and those who create digital experiences," Nvidia announced today.

By purposely reducing the new RTX 3060's performance, NVIDIA is hoping to push cryptocurrency miners towards its new line of CMP dedicated mining GPUs.

Why didn't NVIDIA do this earlier? it's not like the miner aspect was a big mystery, it was known from the start! Too little, too late.

Still not seeing a pixel's worth of rtx 3070 cards at any ethical retailer, and it's been over 5 months since launch. Completely ridiculous.

Something smells with this whole thing. I've never seen stock so depleted for so long for a single commodity.

Miners will probably just flash custom bios on those cards or use old/modified drivers to get around that limitation. So won't help much I think.

NVIDIA cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards​

NVIDIA announced today that it's halving the hash rate for Etehereum cryptocurrency mining on the new GeForce RTX 3080, 3070, and 3060 Ti graphics cards to make them less desirable for miners.

The company will add "Lite Hash Rate" or "LHR" identifiers to retail product listings and boxes for all these new nerfed graphics cards that will start shipping later this month.

"Today, we're taking additional measures by applying a reduced ETH hash rate to newly manufactured GeForce RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti graphics cards," said Matt Wuebbling, NVIDIA's Global Head of GeForce Marketing.

"This reduced hash rate only applies to newly manufactured cards with the LHR identifier and not to cards already purchased."

According to Wuebbling, this decision was taken to make sure that more of these cards will be used by gamers worldwide instead of stacked in cryptocurrency mining farms.

Even if this stops the miners, I don't see how this will stop the scalping problem.

GPU mining aside demand for GPUS in general are still very high so scalpers will still buy out
these stocks and resell them just to make a quick profit.

NVIDIA loves miners they buy 100's to 1000's of their GPUS, a normal gamer maybe 1 GPU a year.
Either way they laughing all the way to the bank.

I wonder if that previous NVIDIA Dev Driver that bypassed the ETH mining limit was an accident or ...
