I want to see what the deep web has to offer and I want to keep my baby secure.... (My laptop... very expensive) I do know a bit about staying secure on tor but one thing I am not 100% on is the os I should use when browsing the deep web. Should I be using a usb? Should I be using a vm? Or should I avoid it completely? I don't want to do anything illegal or go on sites like hiring a hitman, hiring a hacker, child porn, etc. I want to just check out things like forums, so I don't think I need to buy a disposible laptop, buy a usb, a wifi adapter, and use mcdonalds wifi, all while wearing gloves and paying in cash. I just want to keep my laptop safe while using my wifi in the comfort of my apartment. Thanks in advance!

DeepWeb is amazing, you will see good stuff and bad stuff. When it comes to security, it will open your mind.

I use Tor Browser on my Manjaro Linux. Now, If you wanna use it on Windows (Windows 7 Recommended), you need to uninstall any security products that you have installed (since they record any webpages you visit and so on).

My advice is to download Tails and burn it on a CD/DVD and use it as Live CD and use a USB Stick to save the URLs and other data that you need or wanna read later.

If you will need any help or more info send me a PM.

This is like asking what kind of armor should i fit my vehicle with, as i want to drive through the worst and most dangerous neighborhoods of the biggest cities.

I would not advise even going there, but this is just me. If your going to anyway, i would at the very least advise you to use a VM and what other tools from that point.

For safe keeping; a Linux version should be fine, remember that we don't know how the website are working on DeepWeb so use it as precautionary measures.

In Windows, are prone for drive by downloads or execution of malicious scripts without user interaction.

These deep web discussions make me laugh.

If you just want to spectate (take a "look-see") on the deep web, then just use Tor before you go through all the trouble of configuring a complicated anti-NSA set up on your system.

The deep web is not like the open web; sites change URLs often, the sites are randomly available, you can't gain access to many sites unless someone well-known to a site vouches for you, etc, etc. Also a site front page is not always indicative of content once you login into a site. For example, a site might be a hacker forum on the front page, but actually a child porn site upon access.

Yeah... McDonald's wifi... that's the ticket. I gotta tell ya, with that statement it is obvious you don't know what you're doing...

Most public wifi hotspots in the US and Europe are videotaped. The spy who got caught because he liked using McDonald's and Star Buck's wifi...

I'm not attacking you or putting you down personally. You just need to do a bit more research.

Same for me. I'm also curious to know what's so special about Deep Web (just did some googling).

But after some "threatening" discussion here, I'm disheartened again...

Surfing the deep web is no big deal. However, if you happen to land on a child porn site - even by mistake - at least in the United States it is a criminal offense.

That being said, it is quite difficult for that to happen because of the way the online pedophiles operate. They go to extreme lengths to filter access and hide their sites.

If you just want to "look-see" then use Tor. Believe me, when you take a look you will be disappointed. It takes a LOT of time and energy to become actively involved on the deep web. Access on the deep web is not available with great ease as it is on the open web.

As @hjlbx said , the efforts needed isn't worth the try; the really interesting stuff are out of your reach unless someone introduce you in. Don't expect to find exciting things available to everybody; hidden stuff are hidden for a good reason...

Well in Singapore, it's illegal too.
Anyway, I'm curious that how are going to surf deep web if those sites are not even searchable by the search engines. I mean we still need a link to go right?

The only way to get any kind of "for real - for real" anonymity is to use a certified clean Live CD - and use a computer that you personally do not own.

As others have suggested here Linux Tails is a good start.

Always use a different computer every time you visit the deep web.

Tor through VPN.

It's all very James Bond, but also not very practical.

It's a big project and - really - not worth the effort. Visiting the deep web is a let-down to many - despite all the goody-goody gumdrops shown on US and European television. What they don't tell you on television is that it took them weeks and months to gain access to what they show.

You have TOR-based search engines.

By participating on the open web, going through the entire deep web rigmarole, etc - eventually you will gain access here and there.

On the deep web, you have to be active and gain others' trust.

Most of the people on the deep web forums are jokers, wannabes, trollers, spectators, and the plain curious. Every once in a while you will see the "real deal," but just like on the open web it is few and far in-between.

Wise words from hjlbx .

Not something I would want to play around with , just because it is there.

The popular press has taken to portraying anyone using Tor , Tails and the like as cyber-criminals
regardless of the reason they might be using them.

I think it likely that your ISP would notice such use , and flag it / log it , so trying this from home or work
is definitely not a good idea.

And public wi-fi hotspots can make users very vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks apart from the many
other good reasons not to use them.

The press themselves are the real cybercriminals IMHO. Imagine them trying to get exclusive from the top criminals, hackers, etc etc... I don't really believe they're using "proper" channel.

if you go TOR and find a "awesome" open site about :

- hackers = high chance they made this site to get victims, all the "free" hacking tools have RAT in them (for their use) , so you will be the target. i remember a guy making fun of all the script kiddies downloading and using his tools , he was so happy to develop his botnet for free without the need of penetrating the computers himself , his motto: "why i would waste time to infect them , when they do it for me for free" ...

- childporn/hitmen/bombs tutorials : mostly honeypot sites own by governments.

so basically , a waste of time, unless someone introduce you; and before they do , they must trust you and surely scrutinized your computer entirely to be sure you are not a gov agent.

Tor, Tails, others have legitimate and illegitimate users. The presumption from governments is that the deep web has bad people on it, but simply visiting the deep web to take a "look-see" isn't going to result in the FBI or NCA showing up at your front door step.

Curious: what's a honeypot site? Why does govt own it?

If you want to draw attention to yourself on the heavily monitored deep web, just search for such things below multiple times and keep visiting the same sites:
  • how to make bomb
  • buy explosives
  • buy machine guns
  • join jihad
  • join ISIS
  • join Daesh
I'm telling you, if you search heavily enough even on the open web a national police agency will eventually show up on your door step...
