They are accused of datamining see for example this thread: Q&A - Does Avast own Jumpshot?
The current problems with CCleaner telemetry you couldn't shut down, bundeling Avast and and an Avast cookie that appears.
These things make Avast look bad and untermine the trust people have in them.
Their AV is quite good, but is you don't trust the company behind it...

If you use Avast free, then after registering your account, block outgoing firewall for AvastUI. That will save you from the advertising.
Avast paid has a good firewall, but if you don't need that, just use Avast free.
With all editions of Avast, you can set it at hardened/aggressive, and then you are already halfway to a default/deny setup. Hard_Configurator has a special setting to integrate Avast hardened/aggressive, and then you are very well protected.

The level of protection in Internet Security and Premier are identical to Avast Free Antivirus. Not all features in Premier are included in your license and require a separate subscription.

Worth it? Not at all.

Remember AVG and Piriform fall under Avast now, and people no longer seem to be interested in those software anymore.
