During its earnings call today, Microsoft revealed that there are now over 1.3 billion monthly active devices running Windows 10 (via ZDNet). The new milestone comes just over a year after Microsoft announced that it had finally hit its goal of having one billion devices running Windows 10.

That fast growth can be attributed in no small part to the increased demand for PCs in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that struck the world in the past year. In its earnings report for the past quarter, Microsoft reported a 10% increase in Windows OEM revenue, meaning its partners have been selling more PCs. Similarly, Surface revenue was up 12% according to the company's report.

Another potential driving factor in Windows 10 adoption is the fact that Windows 7 is no longer supported outside of enterprise customers paying for extended security updates, which aren't cheap. In order to stay secure, more and more companies had to upgrade to the newer version of the OS.

Windows 10 has been out for nearly 6 years now and I've really not had any issues with it (aside from the mess when it became available to public) but it has came a long way since 2015.

Call me crazy but I do miss Vista purely for the nostalgia and I don't think it was as bad as people claimed it to be.

Windows 10 is basically free and MS has good reason to do this.
Here is an interesting article from Techradar.

But, why wouldn't Microsoft care? This is, after all, the company that tries to get you to use its Edge browser and Bing search engine at every opportunity – so why would it suddenly become so carefree about Windows 10?
That’s sort of the answer. You see, it’s in Microsoft’s interests to get as many people on Windows 10 as possible for a simple reason: as a trojan horse for Edge and Bing. The amount of valuable ad money and user information Microsoft would get from more people using Edge and Bing is huge, and by getting people onto Windows 10 as quickly as possible – which has both of those deeply integrated – it can help boost the userbase of those services.
And it needs all the help it can get. While the new Chromium-based Edge browser is gaining in popularity – it recently overtook Firefox – it still languishes miles behind Google’s Chrome.
And Bing is doing even worse, with the search engine nowhere near as popular as Google’s… Google.
So, Microsoft will want to get more people using them, and to do that it needs to knock down the biggest barrier to entry: paying for Windows 10.
That’s right. I think Microsoft should give Windows 10 away for free.

So basically Microsoft should admit defeat and try to do what Google has been doing for ages now? A search engine and a browser, a data business model more profitable that any other business models?

Seems like this was MS strategy from the start, get has many people has possible to use their OS and get Edge and Bing on those 1.3Billion devices.
Hey presto you have a much bigger audience now using Edge and Bing services. So the article implies this is why its so easy to get Windows 10 to activate and at this point they should just give the OS away for free so that more people will use their browser and search engine services.

*There maybe legal issues that we are not aware of that prevents MS from giving their OS away for free.
