Microsoft is killing off Windows Phone 8.1 support today, more than three years after the company first introduced the update. The end of support marks an end to the Windows Phone era, and the millions of devices still running the operating system. While most have accepted that the death of Windows Phone occurred more than a year ago, AdDuplex estimates that nearly 80 percent of all Windows-powered phones are still running Windows Phone 7, Windows Phone 8, or Windows Phone 8.1. All of these handsets are now officially unsupported, and only 20 percent of all Windows phones are running the latest Windows 10 Mobile OS. ~Source

Android killed Windows Phone. ;)
I've owned a HTC WP 8X, and on the long run was really disappointed of the phone. The Windows Phone UI really needs a redesign, the Metro design looked outdated when compared with the Android UI. In theory, Microsoft should have easily won the battle with Android, I mean, having the same OS on your phone and laptop/PC and being able to connect them, should have been a big advantage. Hopefully, Microsoft will come up with a new UI, because right now, not even Windows Phone 10 can't be a match for Android/iOS.

Definitely @Jack and @Spawn . Now there's no exchange offers to windows phones. Even if it is provided, a very small value offered which would resist the users to sell. I am considering a worthy switch which would ease my temptation.

Correct! They had the potential to be major player in smartphone market. The OS performed really well compared to Android. Should've put more effort in adding features, improvements, advertising etc.
Features... Improvements... Advertising... meeeeeh...
What they really missed was app support - any mobile platform will die without apps.

True. But if it isn't popular, then developers won't be making apps. Less features and improvements= Less popularity and less apps. Apple made it with less features because they were the 1st to do it and only real competition was(is) Android, not very refined back then. Nokia was starting to perform better with cheap, high quality and great value for money devices. But MS screwed that as well after buying Nokia's phone division.
