What you need to know
  • x64 emulation is coming to Windows on ARM PCs in November (Insider program).
  • Microsoft Teams natively compiled for ARM64 is also coming soon.
  • The news builds on recently announced Snapdragon PCs and support for the App Assure Program.

Currently, Windows 10 on ARM laptops can only emulate 32-bit Windows apps in addition to running native apps compiled for ARM64.

But many high-end applications and apps for enterprise rely on 64-bit-only editions, which are incompatible with ARM.

That now changes and will open the gates for many more apps to run on devices like Surface Pro X...

Microsoft Finally Brings x64 Emulation to Windows 10 ARM (softpedia.com)

The Redmond-based software giant is now the one rolling out a big announcement, as the company is introducing x64 emulation in preview for Windows 10 on ARM PCs.

The new system is only available for users in the Windows Insider program and running build 21277 in the Dev channel.

Microsoft says users can now install x64 apps from the Microsoft Store on Windows 10 on ARM, though the company warns everything is still in the preview stage and further improvements might still be required.

“In this preview, you can install x64 apps from the Microsoft Store or from any other location of your choosing. You can try key x64-only productivity apps like Autodesk Sketchbook, as well as games like Rocket League. Other apps, like Chrome, which run today on ARM64 as 32-bit apps, can run as 64-bit using the new x64 emulation capability. These apps may benefit from having more memory when run as 64-bit emulated apps,” Hari Pulapaka, Partner Group Program Manager, Windows, explains.

Hands-On with Windows 10 on ARM x64 Emulation:
OK, this wasn’t a particularly comprehensive test. But even in this early state, x64 emulation on WOA seems to achieve its goals. And in doing so, Microsoft has finally, after three long years, eliminated the single most debilitating problem with this platform. In doing so, it only has one other major hurdle to pass, general performance, which, again, seems like a solvable problem. WOA, finally, is on the path to being viable.

And that, folks, is great news.

I won't pay to be a betatester of those ARM laptops until x64 emulation becomes irrelevant with native ARM64 software
