This scam starts with a text message that appears to come from Wells Fargo. Here is an example of the phishing text message:
“We had to put your Wells Fargo Account on hold because of a recent security threat seen on [date], please visit [malicious site] to review and verify.”
The message claims that the recipient’s Wells Fargo account has been frozen due to some security issue detected on a specific date and time. It instructs the recipient to visit the linked website to review the security threat and verify their account.
However, this is a completely fake text message. It does not come from Wells Fargo at all. The scammers are simply impersonating Wells Fargo in order to trick recipients into visiting the phishing site. The linked website is fraudulent and set up only to steal personal and financial information.
How does the ‘We Had To Put Your Wells Fargo Account On Hold’ scam work?
This scam is intended to alarm recipients into thinking there is an urgent issue with their bank account that they need to address immediately. The message about an account being frozen due to a security threat scares victims into clicking the link without thinking.
When the recipient visits the phishing site, it looks deceptively like the real Wells Fargo login page.
