Some versions mention pornography websites, possession of illegal videos or pictures, distribution of prohibited content, money laundering, or abuse-related material.

The accusations are intentionally extreme. Scammers use shame, fear, and urgency to stop victims from thinking clearly.

Many versions also include fake reference numbers, foreign government addresses, signatures from supposed police officials, and long descriptions of forensic tools. These details are meant to make the email appear official, but they are not proof that the message is real.

A real law enforcement agency does not send vague mass emails demanding that random people reply within 24 or 48 hours to explain alleged criminal activity. Real legal notices do not arrive from free email accounts, strange sender domains, or generic “official message” inboxes. Real investigations also do not rely on threatening templates filled with poor grammar, strange wording, and mismatched agency names.

What the Scam Email Looks Like

The scam often begins with a subject line such as:

The body of the email usually includes a fake case number or reference number. It may then claim that an agency has detected unlawful activity linked to your IP address.

Common phrases include:

  • “Serious legal action will be taken against you”
  • “You must respond within 24 hours”

The emails often contain claims about advanced digital forensic capabilities, including deleted data extraction, imaging, hash value calculation, forensic servers, mobile phone extraction, Android and iOS tools, and on-site examination equipment.

This technical language is used to create fear. It does not mean the sender has actually investigated you.

This vagueness is intentional. The same message can be sent to thousands of people at once.

3. The Agencies Do Not Match Properly

Many versions mix different countries, agencies, and legal systems in ways that make no sense.

One email may mention Nepal Police and the National Cyber Security Centre. Another may mention Indian police units, the Central Bureau of Investigation, or the Intelligence Bureau. Another may pretend to come from the FBI while using strange wording such as “Federal Bureau of Investigation Incorporation with Worldwide Police.”

These mismatched names are a major red flag.

Scammers often copy official agency names from the internet, combine them randomly, and insert them into threatening templates.

4. The Language Is Unprofessional

The emails often contain awkward grammar, strange phrasing, and unnatural legal language.

Examples include:

  • “It is quite unfortunate to turn your official or private Internet to a juvenile pornographic movie cyber.”
  • “We brought to your attention this very disturbing issues.”
  • “You will definitely face the consequences.”
  • “Federal Bureau of Investigation Incorporation with Worldwide Police.”

These phrases do not read like real legal notices. They read like machine-translated scam templates.

5. The Sender Wants You to Reply First

One of the biggest warning signs is that the email says more information will be provided only after you respond.

That is how scammers start the conversation.

Once you reply, they know your email address is active. They may then escalate the scam by demanding money, asking for identity documents, requesting remote access to your device, sending fake settlement instructions, or threatening to send the case to police, family, employer, or media contacts.

6. The Deadline Is Designed to Make You Panic

Most versions include a 24-hour or 48-hour deadline.

This is not about legal procedure. It is psychological pressure.

Scammers want you to act before you verify anything. The faster you respond, the easier it is for them to manipulate you.

7. Some Versions Use Free or Suspicious Email Addresses

A real government agency would not normally send a serious court order from a random free email provider or unrelated domain.

If the message comes from an address that does not match the official agency domain, treat it as suspicious.

Even if the sender name looks official, scammers can spoof names easily.

First, the scammer sends a frightening email claiming that your internet traffic, IP address, or devices are under investigation. The message accuses you of serious cybercrime or illegal online behavior.

Next, the email uses official-sounding names, court language, fake reference numbers, and law enforcement titles to make the threat feel real.

Then the scammer gives you a short deadline. You may be told to respond within 24 or 48 hours or face immediate legal action.

If you reply, the scammer may continue the attack in several ways:

  • They may demand a “fine,” “clearance fee,” “court fee,” or “settlement payment.”
  • They may ask you to send copies of your ID, passport, address, or phone number.
  • They may ask for banking details or payment card information.
  • They may tell you to pay in cryptocurrency, gift cards, wire transfer, or mobile payment apps.
  • They may send a fake arrest warrant or fake legal document.
  • They may claim your name will be published publicly unless you cooperate.
  • They may ask you to install remote access software.
  • They may send links to phishing pages that steal passwords.
  • They may attach malware disguised as legal documents.

The first email is only the bait. The real scam begins after the victim responds.

What Scammers Are Trying to Steal

The scam may be used for several types of fraud.

Money

Some victims may be told they can avoid prosecution by paying a penalty or “case settlement” fee. The scammer may request payment through cryptocurrency, gift cards, bank transfer, or other hard-to-recover methods.

Personal Information

Scammers may ask for your full name, address, date of birth, ID number, passport, phone number, employer, or family details. This information can be used for identity theft or future scams.

Email and Account Passwords

The scam may include links to fake portals where you are asked to “verify your identity” or “submit your explanation.” These pages may steal your email password, banking login, or two-factor authentication codes.

Remote Access to Your Device

In more aggressive versions, scammers may claim they need to inspect your device, clean your system, or verify your internet traffic. They may ask you to install remote access tools such as AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or similar software.

Once connected, they can steal files, passwords, banking data, browser sessions, and personal documents.

STEP 2: Reset browsers back to default settings

Otherwise, delete the folder — it contains sensitive data like passwords and cookies, and may also still hold the malicious files you just removed.

STEP 1: Remove malicious profiles

Profiles are used by IT admins in businesses to control the behavior of their Macs. These profiles can configure a Mac to do many different things, some of which are not otherwise possible.
When it comes to home users, adware and browser hijackers are using the configuration profile to prevent users from removing malicious programs from the computer. This also prevents the user from changing that behavior in the browser’s settings.

In this first step, we will check your computer to see if any configuration profiles are installed. To do this, follow the below steps:

  1. Open “System Settings”

    From the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of the screen, select System Settings. (On macOS Monterey and earlier, this is called System Preferences.)

  2. Look for “Profiles”

    In the System Settings window, search for Profiles — on newer macOS versions you’ll find it under Privacy & Security, or you can type “Profiles” in the search box.

    No Profiles section? Good news — that means no profiles are installed on your Mac, which is completely normal. Skip ahead to the next step of this guide.
  3. Remove the malicious profiles

    Malware uses configuration profiles to lock your browser settings — forcing a fake search engine or homepage on you and preventing you from changing it back. If you see a profile you don’t recognize (and your Mac isn’t managed by your workplace or school), select it, press the − (minus) button, and click Remove to confirm.

STEP 2: Delete malicious apps

In this second step, we will try to identify and remove any malicious apps and files that might be installed on your computer. Sometimes redirects or adware programs can have usable Uninstall entries that can be used to remove these programs.

  1. Quit the malicious programs

    Check the Apple menu bar in the top-right corner of your screen. If you see an icon you don’t recognize, click it and select Quit. This stops the malware from running so it can’t interfere while we remove it.

  2. Open “Finder”

The names change constantly, though — so treat any app you can’t account for as suspect.

    Right-click the Trash icon in your dock and select “Empty Trash“. This permanently deletes the malicious app you just removed — until you do this, the malware is still on your Mac.

    Malware on Mac uses launch agents and launch daemons — small files that automatically restart the malware every time you boot your Mac. We’ll check the four folders where they hide:

    1. Click the desktop to make sure you’re in Finder, then open the “Go” menu and click “Go to Folder“.Go to Folder mac

      • /Library/LaunchAgents
      • ~/Library/LaunchAgents
      • /Library/Application Support

    3. In each folder, look for suspicious .plist files — typically named after the malware or with odd, random-looking names. Some known examples: “com.adobe.fpsaud.plist”, “installmac.AppRemoval.plist”, “myppes.download.plist”, “mykotlerino.ltvbit.plist”, and “com.myppes.net-preferences.plist”. When you find a malicious file, move it to the Trash — then empty the Trash again when you’re done.
      Be careful: these folders also contain files belonging to legitimate apps — especially /Library/Application Support, where programs like Adobe, Google, and Microsoft store their data. Only delete files you’re confident are malicious. If you’re unsure about a file, search its exact name online first — or skip it; the Malwarebytes scan in the next step will catch what you miss.

STEP 3: Reset browsers back to default settings

In this third step, we will remove spam push notifications and malicious extensions, and change to default any settings that might have been changed by malware.
For each browser that you have installed on your computer, please click on the tab below and follow the displayed steps to reset that browser.

  1. Go to Safari’s “Preferences”.
