Dexter ransomware locks the files first. Then it keeps the old name and the old type, and appends the letters dexter with no extra dot. Then it opens a pop-up and talks like a recovery desk. The window is the storefront. It sells “special decryption software.” It prints $1500 as the price. It also prints 0.0030 BTC as the amount. Those two figures do not match at normal Bitcoin rates. That mismatch is the hook. It is not a discount. It is broken checkout math printed on the glass.

If you are staring at a pile of names like 1.jpgdexter and a window that greets you with Welcom To : DEXTER, you are in a ransom incident, not a broken disk and not a browser pop-up that only wants a phone call. The folder is the evidence. The window is a checkout. Stay with the folder, not with the script.

The first tell is the rename. In the published sample, 1.jpg becomes 1.jpgdexter. The same append hits the rest of a normal Documents listing. vacation.jpg becomes vacation.jpgdexter. invoice-2026.pdf becomes invoice-2026.pdfdexter. taxes.xlsx becomes taxes.xlsxdexter. family.mp4 becomes family.mp4dexter. You can still read what the file used to be. You cannot open it. Windows may now call the type a JPGDEXTER File, a PDFDEXTER File, or whatever mash it builds from the old type plus those extra letters. An app cannot talk locked bytes back into a JPEG.

The second tell is the note, and the note is a window. After the files are locked, Dexter displays a pop-up. There is no published text file sitting next to the photos. There is no HOW_TO, no README, no HTML page in the folder that does the talking. The first English you can still read after the photos break is a window that wants a payment. The window is meant to be obeyed. It is not meant to be trusted.

The body of that sample is a shop with two price tags. It says all of your files have been encrypted. It says the computer was infected with a virus. It says you will not be able to decrypt them without their help. Then it asks what you can do to get the files back, and answers itself: buy their special decryption software. The printed price for that software is $1500. Payment, it says, can be made in Bitcoin. A few lines later the same window prints the amount as 0.0030 BTC. Those are the published numbers. Use those numbers. Do not invent a third rate to make them agree.

The window then points at two Bitcoin addresses and one inbox. The printed wallets are 1JueMKAQuWjwuKNEzTuyMfXAZdj5HyVqjx and 14mWyhrBGNtN2SB5c7qaEooo64yquSscEY. The printed mail is Descrypter.pay@onemail.com. The personal identification ID field in that published sample is blank. This page will not invent an ID to fill it. A blank ID is not a missing ticket you should complete. It is part of how this sample actually looks.

That is the whole costume. A locked folder of names with dexter stuck on the end. A pop-up, not a note file. A greeting that misspells Welcome. A blank ID. A $1500 sticker next to a 0.0030 BTC amount that does not match it. Two wallets. One inbox. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. There is no reason to pay $1500. There is no reason to send coin to those wallets. There is no reason to mail that inbox because a window told you to.

The dexter stamp is the first warning

Most lockers pick an extra ending with a fresh dot, so the change looks like a new file type. Dexter is messier on purpose. It appends the letters dexter to the filename you already had. That is why 1.jpg becomes 1.jpgdexter, not a tidy 1.jpg.dexter. The old type is still in the name. The extra letters are glued to it. You do not have to decode anything. You can still see the photo, the invoice year, the word taxes, the family clip. The familiar words are still in the folder. The files are not familiar anymore.

Do not treat that readable name as a fix. Do not trim dexter off the end and expect Photos or Excel to open the file. Do not run a bulk “extension fixer” you found in an ad. The name is a label. A window feels like the machine itself is talking. It feels like a license prompt, a recovery wizard, a Windows notice you are supposed to finish before you can do anything else. It names the brand in capital letters so the rest of the flyer feels like the only adult in the room. You are supposed to stop thinking and start obeying. The missing letter in Welcome is not a joke you should ignore. It is how this window actually reads.

The shout is also a brand. Later search ads will quote DEXTER. Later “helpers” will paste Welcom so they sound close to your glass. Anyone can copy a headline. Copying Welcom To : DEXTER does not mean they can reverse 1.jpgdexter. It means they read the same window you did, or they read a screenshot of it.

Do not tidy the greeting when you write the incident down. Do not correct Welcom to Welcome in the report so it looks more professional. $1500 and 0.0030 BTC are the same ask with broken math

The window prints two figures as if they were one product. The price for the software is $1500. The payment information amount is 0.0030 BTC. Those are the published numbers. At normal Bitcoin rates, those two figures do not match. A person who tries to “do the conversion” in the same hour the photos broke is supposed to feel stupid, then pick whichever number is easier to send. That confusion is the pitch. It is not a rounding error you should fix for them.

Do not invent a local-currency value for 0.0030 BTC to finish their sentence. Do not decide $1500 is “the real price” because it looks like a product sticker. Two wallets are still one checkout

The published window prints two Bitcoin addresses. One line labels a Bitcoin Address as 1JueMKAQuWjwuKNEzTuyMfXAZdj5HyVqjx. Another line says Send Bitcoin To : 14mWyhrBGNtN2SB5c7qaEooo64yquSscEY. Two strings do not make a safer payment. Two strings make a person pause, pick one, and feel like they completed a form. Completing that form is the product.

Keep both strings as identifiers. Do not treat them as a help desk. Do not type either one into an exchange “just to see the fee.” Do not photograph them into a group chat. Do not paste them into a second site that offers to “check if the wallet is real.” Anyone can send you digits. Digits do not open 1.jpgdexter.

A later message that “corrects” the window and names only one of those addresses is still the same shop, or a copycat standing in the same doorway. A later message that adds a third wallet because “the published ones are burned” is a second sales pitch. This page reprints the two published addresses so you can recognize them in a report. It does not reprint them so you can finish a transfer.

The blank ID is not a ticket you should fill

Under the greeting, the window prints Your personal identification ID : and then a blank. In the published sample that field is not a code, not a hex string, and not a victim number. It is empty. This page will not invent an ID to make the screenshot look complete. A missing ID is not a puzzle. It is how that sample actually shipped.

Do not invent a number because other ransomware families print one. Do not type a hostname, a Windows username, or a random string into that field “so they can find your key.” Do not mail Descrypter.pay@onemail.com to ask what your ID was supposed to be. Filling a blank they left empty is how a locked folder becomes a conversation. The blank is theirs. Leave it blank in the report too, and say so.

Copycats love a blank. They will sell you an ID. They will say the decryptor will not run until you have one. They will generate a pretty string and ask you to paste it back. That is still the same market. The published sample did not hand out an ID as a quote. Do not finish it for them.

The printed contact is Descrypter.pay@onemail.com. That is the aisle. A private inbox puts you in a room they own, on an account they can delete, with a thread they can screenshot and reuse. Email would feel like a ticket. This email is not a ticket. It is how a locked photo becomes a negotiation.

The handle is branding, the same way dexter on the filename is branding. Descrypter. Pay. One mail. The window even tells you to google how to buy Bitcoin, as if the remaining work were homework. That line is there so you leave the folder and enter their market. Do not open a fresh mail account because the window said to. Do not send a test file to prove you are a real victim. Do not paste a folder listing into a new message. Do not argue about $1500 versus 0.0030 BTC as if a discount were available.

Writing that inbox is the product. A reply does not start a warranty. It starts a conversation you cannot enforce. The $1500 line is how they make that first message feel like a finished purchase. Three numbers on one flyer is not a menu. It is noise. Noise is useful to a crew that wants you to pick something, anything, so the transfer starts. A person who would never send $1500 might send 0.0030 BTC because it looks small. A person who is already panicking might read 900 Bitcoin and decide the smaller figures are a bargain. This is not every older locker that also used the word dexter

Years ago, other lockers used a dexter-style ending as one brand among many. Public decryptor pages for those older families still list that word next to other old endings. That history is real. It is also a different storefront. Do not assume an old key works because the word matches. Do not download a mystery decryptor from a search ad because the page title contains Dexter. A tool that was built for a different locker, in a different year, with a different note, is not a reason to feed it invoice-2026.pdfdexter. If a trusted project later publishes a decryptor that actually names this pop-up, that project will not need you to mail the inbox or send $1500 first.

How The Ransomware Works

The shop is simple once you stop reading it as a rescue. Lock the files. Glue dexter onto the old names. Open a window instead of dropping a text file. Misspell Welcome. Leave the ID blank. Print $1500. Print 0.0030 BTC. Print two wallets. Print 900 Bitcoin as if that were a third lane. Point at Descrypter.pay@onemail.com. Tell the scared person to google Bitcoin. Then wait for someone else to “fix” the math.

1. The lock keeps the old name so you recognize the loss

Dexter encrypts the files it wants as leverage, then appends dexter. That is why 1.jpg is still readable as 1.jpgdexter. The operators want you to inventory the damage in seconds. They want you to see the vacation photo, the invoice, the tax sheet, and the family video in one glance. A coded filename can confuse you. A readable filename makes you feel the theft.

If only one folder looks wrong, do not assume the rest of the disk is safe. Ransomware walks trees. It hits Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Downloads, and any drive letter it can reach, including a USB stick you forgot was plugged in. Unplug extra disks. Double-clicking a renamed file does not bring the photo back. The thumbnail may already look broken. 2. The extra letters stick to the old type

Because there is no fresh dot, Windows can treat the whole tail as a new type. 1.jpgdexter can show up as a JPGDEXTER File. invoice-2026.pdfdexter can show up as a PDFDEXTER File. That mash is a tell. It is also a trap for the first click. Windows may offer to pick an app. There is no player for that ending. Decline the picker. Do not install a “dexter opener” from a search ad.

People sometimes think the disk died. The disk is usually fine. The contents were rewritten so only the attackers’ key can turn them back. Everyday programs fail in a boring way. The photo app shows a broken thumbnail. Accounting software asks for a file that is still listed, only the name is longer. That boring failure is the lock working. It is not a reason to run a repair wizard on the same machine.

3. A window opens instead of a note file

After the rename, the locker does not need a text file to get the first click. It puts the pitch on the glass. A later site that sells “Dexter decryption software” for $1500, or for 0.0030 BTC, is standing in the same aisle. The original flyer already named the product. You do not need a second vendor to repeat it.

5. $1500 is printed as if it were a shelf price

Plenty of lockers hide the figure until you write. This one prints $1500 up front. That is not kindness. A printed price removes the last excuse for delay. You do not have to “ask what it costs.” You already know. The remaining step, in their script, is the transfer. The window has already done the quoting.

A round $1500 also travels well. It is easy to repeat in a family group. It is easy to treat like a repair bill. It is easy to round into “maybe we can just get this over with.” It is still a payment to the people who locked family.mp4dexter. It still funds the next copy of the same locker. It still does not produce a warranty. Do not pay $1500. Do not pay a “deposit” against that figure. Do not pay a friend to pay it for you.

6. 0.0030 BTC is printed as if it were the same shelf

A few lines later the same window prints Amount: 0.0030 BTC. That is the second tag. At normal Bitcoin rates it does not match $1500. The flyer does not explain the gap. It does not need to. A person who sees both numbers will try to reconcile them, and that effort is time spent inside the shop. The published numbers are $1500 and 0.0030 BTC. Leave them unmatched. Do not “help” the crew by sending whichever one your exchange will process faster.

Small coin amounts also travel well. 0.0030 BTC looks like a parking ticket next to a tax folder. It looks like something a careful person might send “just this once.” Cheap is a tactic. Then it adds If You Send : 900 Bitcoin We will send you the decryption key. That is a checkout with extra arrows. Extra arrows are not a safety feature. They are how a confused person still completes a transfer.

Do not send coin to either wallet. Do not send 900 Bitcoin. Do not send a test satoshi to see if the address is active. A test payment is still a payment. It still tells them this victim pays. Copy the two published strings into an incident record. Then leave them alone. They are identifiers for a responder. They are not payment instructions you should carry out.

8. The inbox is there for when the math confuses you

After the wallets, the window says to contact them by email at Descrypter.pay@onemail.com. That line exists for the hour you notice $1500 and 0.0030 BTC do not match. You are supposed to write and ask which figure is real. Asking is checkout. The crew can then name a third figure, a deadline, or a test file. None of those extras were required for the lock. They are required for the sale.

A demo that “unlocks one file” is not proof they can unlock the vacation photo. Anyone can open one junk file they control. Anyone can send you a wallet string that makes an exchange window appear. If a later message skips the original inbox and asks for coin over ordinary mail, that is still the same market, or a copycat standing in the same doorway.

A real public decryptor, when one exists, shows up on an official project page that already existed before your incident. It does not need a $1500 send. It does not need 0.0030 BTC. It does not need those two wallets. It does not need Descrypter.pay@onemail.com. If the pitch is “we can decrypt, pay us first,” you are still in the market the ransomware created. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. Until a trusted project publishes one, treat any site that says “we already have the Dexter key” as a second sales pitch.

What To Do If Your Files End With dexter

The first useful hour is quiet. You are not looking for a miracle key. You are stopping the spread, keeping evidence, and moving the incident onto official rails. The house steps below cover the generic work. After that block, stay with the Dexter details the generic page cannot name for you.

STEP 1: Use Rkill to terminate suspicious programs.

When RKill runs it will kill malware processes and then removes incorrect executable associations and fixes policies that stop us from using certain tools.

  2. Run RKill.

    After downloading, double-click the iExplore.exe icon to kill malicious processes. In most cases, downloaded files are saved to the Downloads folder.
    The program may take some time to search for and end various malware programs.

Keep every stamped name exactly as it is. Do not pay $1500. Do not send coin to those wallets. Do not mail that inbox. Do not invent an ID. Do not rename the pile in bulk. If you take one sentence with you, take this. A folder of names ending in dexter, plus a pop-up that prints $1500 next to 0.0030 BTC, is ransomware on the first sighting. Treat it that way before anyone offers to make the numbers agree.

10 Rules to Avoid Online Scams

Here are 10 practical safety rules to help you avoid malware, online shopping scams, crypto scams, and other online fraud. Each tip includes a quick “if you already got hit” action.

  1. Stop and verify before you click, log in, download, or pay.

    Most scams win by creating urgency. Verify using a trusted method: type the website address yourself, use the official app, or call a known number (not the one in the message).

  2. Keep your operating system, browser, and apps updated.
