Prinz Eugen EXPOSED: .prinzeugen Files and No Note on the Desktop

You open the Desktop the way you did yesterday. The first photo should still be 1.jpg. The vacation shot should still be vacation.jpg. The invoice should still be invoice-2026.pdf. The tax sheet should still be taxes.xlsx. Instead every familiar name has a second ending tacked on. 1.jpg is now 1.jpg.prinzeugen.
Then you look for the note. That is the next habit, because every locker you have heard about leaves a flyer. There is no README. There is no HOW_TO_DECRYPT.txt. There is no HTML page sitting on the wallpaper. There is no new text file in Documents, either. The listing is only locked names and empty space where the instructions should be.
That is the trap, not a glitch.
This page is for the hour those names appear. It is not a miracle key. It is a map of an empty desk, so the missing flyer does not send you hunting through inboxes you should not write.

Overview
Prinz Eugen ransomware locks the files first. Then it keeps the old name and the old type, and hangs .prinzeugen on the end. Then it does the thing that throws people. It drops nothing. No txt. No html. No wallpaper change. The Desktop looks broken and silent at the same time.
If you are staring at a pile of .prinzeugen files and an empty desk, you are in a ransom incident, not a broken disk and not a Windows pop-up. The folder is the evidence. The missing note is the costume. Stay with the folder, not with a search for a flyer that was never written to disk.
The first tell is the rename. In the sample used for this page, 1.jpg becomes 1.jpg.prinzeugen. vacation.jpg becomes vacation.jpg.prinzeugen. invoice-2026.pdf becomes invoice-2026.pdf.prinzeugen. taxes.xlsx becomes taxes.xlsx.prinzeugen. family.mp4 becomes family.mp4.prinzeugen. You can still read what the file used to be. You cannot open it. Windows may call the type a PRINZEUGEN File and offer a useless “choose an app” box. An app cannot talk locked bytes back into a JPEG.
The second tell is the emptiness. After the files are locked, there is no note to open. Plenty of families drop a README so the first English you can still read is a sales flyer. This strain skips that step. The silence is not a kindness. It is a way to make you fill the blank yourself. People who cannot find a flyer start searching the brand, the extension, and then any inbox that appears next to those words.
Researchers later published two out-of-band inboxes for this strain: prinzeugen@mail2tor.co and standardbankcc@cock.li. Those addresses are identifiers. They are not a help desk. They did not appear because a text file on your Desktop told you to write. They appeared in public reporting so defenders could recognize the same operator cluster. Treat them as evidence, not as a checkout.
The lock itself is a Go locker. It uses ChaCha20-Poly1305, with a unique random value for each file. That last detail is the part people try to bargain with. “Maybe if I copy the ending off one photo, the others will open.” They will not. Each locked object has its own random material. Renaming 1.jpg.prinzeugen back to 1.jpg does not reuse a key. It only gives you a damaged object with a prettier label.
When the lock is finished, the program deletes itself. That is why a later scan can look cleaner than the folder. The files still end in .prinzeugen. The locker is already gone. A green scan after cleanup can still sit next to a dead accounting folder. Cleanup and recovery are different jobs. Do the first so the second is not undone overnight.
Public reporting on how this actor gets in is consistent and short. Compromised Remote Desktop access. Then remote management software, so the same person can come back without sitting at the keyboard. That order matters. The lock you can see in Explorer is the last move, not the first one. If a machine was reachable over a weak RDP login, the files were not the only thing at risk.
Some writeups link the activity to a handle called ROOTBOY. Treat that as researcher attribution, not as a confirmed identity, and not as a person you can call. A handle is a label on a cluster of artifacts. It is not a company. It is not a support ticket. It is not a reason to write prinzeugen@mail2tor.co and ask for “ROOTBOY’s desk.”
That is the whole costume. A locked folder of .prinzeugen names. No note on the Desktop. No txt. No html. Two inboxes published later, off the disk. A Go locker. ChaCha20-Poly1305 with a unique random per file. A program that deletes itself. Access that starts with a compromised RDP login and continues through remote management software. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. There is no printed wallet on the Desktop. There is no printed ransom figure in the folder. There is no reason to mail those inboxes today because the desk is empty.
The empty Desktop is the first warning
Most lockers want you to open something. They drop a README so the first click after the panic feels like reading a help file. They drop HTML so the demand opens in a browser. They change the wallpaper so you cannot look away. Prinz Eugen does none of that. The Desktop after the lock is a listing of .prinzeugen names and the same icons you already had. The missing flyer is the tell.
People waste the first hour hunting for a note that was never written. They search the profile for HOW_TO, DECRYPT, README, RECOVER, and every other word they remember from a different family. They open Recycle Bin. They ask a relative if a pop-up closed itself. They start to believe the rename is a glitch because “real ransomware always leaves instructions.” That sentence is how this strain buys time. The lock is already finished. The flyer was never the proof.
Do not treat the empty desk as unfinished work. Do not wait for a text file to appear “in a few minutes.” Do not download a “note finder” from a search ad. Do not write a stranger and ask them to send you the flyer you think you lost. The sample on this page has no note to follow. If your folder matches that sample, you already have the evidence you need: the .prinzeugen ending.
The .prinzeugen name is the lock you can see
Most lockers pick an extension so you notice the change in seconds. This one uses .prinzeugen. The extra cruelty is how readable the listing stays. You do not have to decode anything. You can still see 1.jpg inside 1.jpg.prinzeugen. You can still see the invoice year. You can still see the word taxes. The familiar words are still on the Desktop. The files are not familiar anymore.
Do not treat that readable name as a fix. Do not strip .prinzeugen off the end and expect Photos or Excel to open the file. Do not run a bulk “extension fixer” you found in an ad. The name is a label. The lock is in the content. Editing the label can make a later trusted tool have a harder time matching the file to what it was. Leave the locked copies as they are until you have a clean machine and a plan that does not start in a criminal inbox.
The extra ending also does advertising. Anyone who sees vacation.jpg.prinzeugen and no note can pretend they already have your case. A later fake helper will quote the extension back to you as if that were expertise. They will say they “found the missing README.” The extension is public. It is sitting in the folder. Quoting it proves nothing except that they can read a listing. Inventing a note for you is not a rescue. It is a second shop.
There is no note to follow
This is the hook, and it is also the instruction. There is no txt to obey. There is no html to click. There is no wallpaper with a timer. If a later message attaches a “Prinz Eugen note” and tells you it belongs on your Desktop, that file did not come from the locker that already finished. It came from someone who noticed the empty space and decided to fill it.
Keep looking at the folder you actually have. If you do not see a README, do not create one. If you do not see HOW_TO_DECRYPT.txt, do not download a sample of someone else’s. If a friend forwards a screenshot of a different family’s note and says “maybe yours is the same,” close it. Other lockers leave flyers. This one does not. Mixing the two wastes the first hour and hands a copycat a script.
A missing note also means there is no printed price to argue with, and no printed wallet to “check.” That absence is not mercy. It is a blank invoice. The people who locked the files can name a figure later, in mail, after you have already written. This page will not invent a ransom figure to finish a sentence the Desktop never started. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain, and there is no flyer on disk that claims otherwise.
The two inboxes are not a help desk
The contact lines published by researchers are prinzeugen@mail2tor.co and standardbankcc@cock.li. Keep those strings as identifiers. Do not treat them as recovery. Do not send a sample file to prove you are a real victim. Do not argue about a price they have not printed on your disk. Those addresses belong to the people who locked the files, or to people standing in the same doorway. Either way, a mail thread is checkout.
Notice where those addresses live. They do not live in a text file on the Desktop. They live in public reporting. That is the out-of-band part. The locker finishes, deletes itself, and leaves you with a folder that looks like a crime scene without a statement. Then a search, a forum, or a later helper points you at an inbox. The empty desk is what makes that inbox look like the only door left. It is not.
Do not create a throwaway account “just to see.” Do not send a screenshot of Explorer to prove the lock. They already chose the extension. A photo of 1.jpg.prinzeugen sitting next to empty space does not make you a verified customer. It makes you a person still following a script that was never written to your disk.
standardbankcc@cock.li is not the bank
Read that second address twice. standardbankcc@cock.li is an attacker inbox. It is not a bank mailbox. It is not a fraud desk. It is not a way to reach a real institution about a locked PC. The string borrows a familiar name so the first glance feels official, or so a later search feels like news. The domain after the @ is still a disposable mail host. The people who published it as a contact published it as an attacker contact.
Do not call a real bank because that string appeared next to .prinzeugen. Do not paste the address into a bank’s “report fraud” form as if the bank sent it. Do not assume a locked home folder is a bank incident because the inbox contains those letters. Split the costume from the institution. The locker on your Desktop is the incident you have. The inbox is a name on a criminal door.
The other published address, prinzeugen@mail2tor.co, does the same job without borrowing a company. It is still not support. A mail2tor inbox is not a ticket system. Writing it does not open vacation.jpg.prinzeugen. Writing it does not prove the other side will ever send a key. Writing it tells them this victim is still reading the empty desk as a conversation starter.
A unique lock on every file is not a puzzle you can rename away
The strain uses ChaCha20-Poly1305. You do not need a lab notebook to use that fact. You need the practical meaning. Each file gets its own random material. The lock on 1.jpg.prinzeugen is not a shared password you can copy from taxes.xlsx.prinzeugen. There is no “one key sitting in the first photo” that unlocks the rest if you guess the right order.
That is why bulk rename tools fail in a boring way. They change the last word in the listing. They do not change the bytes. Photos still will not open. Excel still will not open. The video player still will not open. Windows may keep offering a “choose an app” box for the PRINZEUGEN type. Decline it. There is no player for that ending.
A unique random per file also makes later fake helpers sound smart. They will ask you to send three files “so we can see if the keys match.” Matching is their word. Your job is not to help them sample the pile. If a trusted decryptor ever appears, it will show up on a project that already existed before your incident, not in a mailbox that asked for a ZIP of the Desktop.
The locker deletes itself so the folder looks like the only clue
After encryption, the program self-deletes. That is a forensic habit, and it is also a sales habit. A victim who cannot find the installer starts to think the damage is “just the names.” A later scan that finds nothing running starts to feel like the emergency is over. The files still end in .prinzeugen. The emergency is the folder.
Do not take a clean scan as a restore. A detection can remove leftover tools. It cannot roll back files that already grew the new ending. That is why this page keeps you on the listing, not on a hunt for a vanished binary. If the names are invoice-2026.pdf.prinzeugen and family.mp4.prinzeugen, you already know the strain. You do not need the deleted program to sit back on disk as a souvenir.
Self-delete also helps the empty-desk trick. There is no leftover note. There is no leftover locker sitting in Downloads with a helpful icon. The only durable mark is the extension. Copycats love that. They can sell a “recovery tool” named after the ending, because the original program is already gone and cannot contradict them.
ROOTBOY is a label, not a person you can call
Researchers sometimes link this activity to a handle called ROOTBOY. That is attribution language. It is a way for analysts to group artifacts. It is not a confirmed identity. It is not a real name. It is not a phone number. It is not a reason to search social media for someone to message. Handles move. Handles get copied. Handles get used by people who want to look like the original operator.
If a later chat greets you as if they were ROOTBOY, they read the same public label you can read. Quoting a handle is not proof they locked your files. Quoting .prinzeugen is not proof either. Anyone can read a folder listing. Anyone can read a research note. Do not let a handle turn an empty Desktop into a private conversation.
When you talk to a responder, name the extension, the missing note, the two published inboxes, and the RDP-then-remote-management path if you know that path fits your machine. You do not need to perform the handle. You do not need to guess who sat at the keyboard. The folder is enough.
How The Ransomware Works
You do not need a lab notebook to understand the trap. You need the order the victim sees. A weak remote login. Remote management software that keeps the door open. A Go locker that rewrites the files. A unique random lock on each object. A readable name with .prinzeugen glued on. No note. A program that deletes itself. Two inboxes published later, off the disk. Then a second shop that tries to invent the flyer that was never there. Here is that package in the order it usually lands.
1. A weak Remote Desktop login becomes a door
Public reporting on access for this strain starts with compromised RDP. That is a remote Windows login that should have been boring. A reused password. A box left open to the internet. A vendor account that nobody rotated. Once that door works, the rest of the costume can wait. The files are not locked yet. The operator is already inside.
This is why the empty Desktop later feels like it came from nowhere. The lock is loud. The login was quiet. If this is a home PC with Remote Desktop enabled “just in case,” treat that as part of the incident, not as a separate IT story. If this is an office box that was reachable from the outside, tell the person who handles the network before you start renaming files. The folder is the last chapter. The door was the first.
2. Remote management software keeps the door open
After the login, the operator can install remote management software. That class of tool is built for help desks. It is built to survive a reboot. It is built so someone can come back without sitting at your chair. In this strain’s public story, that software is how the same person stays on the machine until they are ready to lock it.
Do not hunt the exact product name in a panic if you do not already know it. Do not download a random “RMM cleaner” from an ad. Tell a responder that remote management software was part of the path. If you see a help-desk tool you never installed, treat it as a door, not as support. Uninstalling it from the infected session is not the whole job. Isolation is. A clean rebuild is. Changing passwords from a different device is.
3. The locker rewrites the files, then brands them
The visible move is the rename you can see in Explorer. Prinz Eugen leaves the original filename in place and appends .prinzeugen. 1.jpg is still readable inside 1.jpg.prinzeugen. invoice-2026.pdf is still readable inside invoice-2026.pdf.prinzeugen. That is not a courtesy. Recognition is the product. If the files became random blocks with no names, you might delay. If the names are still yours, you feel the loss immediately, and you look for the file that explains it.
The same listing trains you to believe a small edit could reverse it. The old extension is still sitting there. Photos still “should” open a JPG. Excel still “should” open an XLSX. The extra ending looks like a mistake you can clip off. That is why people try a rename before they try anything else. The lock is not in the last eleven characters. Clipping .prinzeugen off taxes.xlsx.prinzeugen does not give you a spreadsheet. It gives you a damaged object with a prettier name.
4. Each file gets its own random lock
The locker is written in Go. The encryption is ChaCha20-Poly1305, with a unique random per file. Those words are not a receipt you can take to a shop. They are the reason a home remedy fails. A shared password would be a rumor you could test. A unique random per file is a wall. The vacation photo and the tax sheet are not waiting on the same guess.
Do not send three files so a stranger can “compare the headers.” Do not run a script that promises to “extract the random” from the first object. Do not treat ChaCha20-Poly1305 as a product name you can search into a paid unlock. Cipher labels travel. Paid unlock pages travel with them. The label on this strain is the ending you can see. Stay with .prinzeugen.
5. No text file, no HTML page, no wallpaper
After the names change, the next expected object never arrives. There is no README. There is no HTML demand. There is no wallpaper with a clock. The Desktop stays a Desktop. That is the moment most people freeze, then search. The search is the substitute flyer. Search results will try to sell you a note, a decryptor, a “Prinz Eugen support” inbox, and a remote session. The locker did not have to print those things. The empty listing does the printing for them.
Do not add the missing pieces yourself. Do not drop a text file onto the Desktop so the incident “looks complete” for a helper. Do not download a sample note from a forum and copy it next to 1.jpg.prinzeugen. Evidence is what the disk already has. A borrowed flyer is someone else’s script sitting on your machine.
6. The program deletes itself
When the lock is done, the locker self-deletes. You are not supposed to find a neat installer sitting in Downloads. You are supposed to find only the folder. That vanishing act is why people say “maybe it was a one-time glitch” even while every photo ends in .prinzeugen. A glitch does not brand a whole tree with the same extra ending. A glitch does not need a research inbox later.
Self-delete is also why a later fake tool can claim to be “the official unlocker.” The original program is gone. Nothing on disk argues with the new download. If a page says it has the Prinz Eugen decryptor because the locker removes itself, that is a sales line. A real public decryptor, when one exists, shows up on an official project page that already existed before your incident. It does not need you to replace a binary that already erased itself.
7. Researchers later published two inboxes
The contact step does not happen on the Desktop. It happens later, out of band. Researchers published prinzeugen@mail2tor.co and standardbankcc@cock.li as the inboxes tied to this strain. That is how a victim who never got a note still ends up staring at a mail compose window. The empty folder makes the first published address feel like the missing README.
It is not. Those two inboxes are the strain’s storefront, sitting off the disk on purpose. There is still no note to follow. There is still no printed figure on the Desktop. Mailing either address is how a locked folder becomes a negotiation. Negotiation is how a demand appears for the first time. Payment is how the next victim is funded. None of those steps restore a machine you can trust.
8. The empty folder is the pressure
Other families use a 72-hour clock printed in Notepad. This one uses silence. Silence feels like you are already late. Silence feels like the real instructions went to someone else. Silence feels like you should write first, before the window you cannot see closes. That feeling is the product. There is no referee who checks whether you waited an hour or a week. The files stay locked either way.
CISA describes the broader squeeze in the official StopRansomware Guide. Ransomware locks files and then demands money. Many crews also claim they copied data. This page will not invent a leak site, a victim list, or an onion URL to decorate that sentence. If copies were taken, that is a breach you handle with people who work for you. You do not handle it by writing prinzeugen@mail2tor.co to ask whether the copies exist.
9. Copycats will invent the flyer you never got
After a ransomware incident, search results fill up with companies that say they can decrypt Prinz Eugen or “all .prinzeugen files.” Some of those shops are ordinary overpriced consultants. Plenty are a second scam. They will quote the extension so they sound close to the case. They will mention the missing note as if they already called the original crew. They will attach a text file and say this is the README you were supposed to have. They will ask for a sample file, a remote-access session, or a deposit.
A demo that “unlocks one file” is not proof they can unlock the vacation photo. Anyone can open one junk file they control. Anyone can send you a note template that makes the empty Desktop look complete. A completed flyer is not Photos opening vacation.jpg again. If a later message skips the published inboxes and asks you to write a third address, that is still the same market, or a copycat standing in the same doorway. Do not answer. Do not help them write the note the locker never dropped.
A real public decryptor, when one exists, shows up on an official project page that already existed before your incident. It does not need prinzeugen@mail2tor.co. It does not need standardbankcc@cock.li. If the pitch is “we can decrypt, pay us first,” you are still in the market the ransomware created. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. Until a trusted project publishes one, treat any site that says “we already have the Prinz Eugen key” as a second sales pitch.
10. Contact closes nothing
Paying a stranger for a private key is not a guarantee. The people behind those inboxes can take the money and disappear. They can send a tool that only unlocks a few files. They can come back later and lock the same machine again. A mail thread makes that outcome easier, not harder. You cannot leave a review on a criminal inbox.
Mailing prinzeugen@mail2tor.co or standardbankcc@cock.li is the free version of the same dead end. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. Starting a thread does not rebuild a JPEG. It only keeps you in their story while the rest of the disk still needs a real plan.
The No More Ransom project puts the rule in plain language. Paying is not guaranteed to bring the files back, and you should not pay. That is the line on the official landing page run with Europol and the project partners. Use that page. Do not use an empty Desktop as a vendor, and do not use those two inboxes as a vendor either.
What To Do If Your Files End in .prinzeugen
Do not mail prinzeugen@mail2tor.co. Do not mail standardbankcc@cock.li. Do not treat that second address as a bank. Do not hunt the Desktop for a README that was never written. Do not download a “missing note” from a search result. Do not send a sample file. Do not invent a ransom figure the folder never printed. If you already sent a message before you found this page, stop there. Do not pay a deposit to “hold the files” for anyone who quotes the empty desk.

Run RKill.
After downloading, double-click the iExplore.exe icon to kill malicious processes. In most cases, downloaded files are saved to the Downloads folder. The program may take some time to search for and end various malware programs.
When it is finished, the black window will close automatically and a log file will open. Do not restart your computer. Proceed to the next step in this guide.

Install Malwarebytes
When the download finishes, open your Downloads folder and double-click the MBSetup file. If Windows shows a User Account Control pop-up, click “Yes” to allow the installation.

Wait for the Scan to Finish
The scan checks your entire system for browser hijackers and other malicious programs, so it can take several minutes. Feel free to do something else — just check back occasionally to see the progress.
Quarantine the Detected Threats
When the scan is done, you’ll see a list of everything Malwarebytes found — malware, adware, and potentially unwanted programs. Click the “Quarantine” button to remove all of them at once.
Malwarebytes will now remove the malicious files and registry entries and move them safely into quarantine.
Restart Your Computer
Some threats can only be fully removed after a reboot. If Malwarebytes asks you to restart, click Yes. Once you’re logged back in, your PC is clean and you can continue with the next steps in this guide.

Export the files that you want to recover.
Once you have found a copy of the original file or folder, right-click on it and the select “Export”. A window will prompt you where you want to save the file or folder.
Keep every .prinzeugen name exactly as it is. Do not bulk-rename 1.jpg.prinzeugen back to 1.jpg, or vacation.jpg.prinzeugen back to vacation.jpg, or invoice-2026.pdf.prinzeugen back to a normal PDF, or taxes.xlsx.prinzeugen back to a spreadsheet, or family.mp4.prinzeugen back to a video. Stripping the extra ending is not a repair. It can make a later trusted tool worse, not better. The original name is already sitting in front of .prinzeugen. You do not need to edit it to know what you lost.
There is no note to keep and no note to follow. Do not “clean up” the Desktop by deleting locked files because they look like junk. Do not create a text file so the incident looks more like other families. Keep the marks you actually have: the .prinzeugen ending, the empty folder, and, if you are writing a report, the two published inboxes prinzeugen@mail2tor.co and standardbankcc@cock.li. Those artifacts are how you prove this was this strain and not a different locker that only sounds similar. They are evidence. They are not instructions you should carry out.
If a later message quotes the missing note and offers “the real README,” that is still the same shop. If a later message skips those two inboxes and asks you to write a third address, that is still the same shop, or a copycat standing in the same doorway. If someone claims they can already decrypt Prinz Eugen files for a fee because they can recite ChaCha20-Poly1305 and the empty Desktop, they are selling a report, not a key. Do not answer. Do not complete their checkout. Do not help them write a flyer the locker never dropped.
If Windows still offers to pick an app for the .prinzeugen type, decline it. There is no player for that ending.
When you talk to a responder, name the .prinzeugen ending, the fact that no txt or html was dropped, the two published inboxes, the Go locker, ChaCha20-Poly1305 with a unique random per file, the self-delete, and the RDP-then-remote-management path if it fits what you know. That is enough to match this locker. You do not need a borrowed note to be taken seriously by your own side. You do not need the ROOTBOY label to make the folder real. The listing is the evidence.
If a stranger later greets you by .prinzeugen, by the missing note, or by those two inboxes, they read the same public facts you did. That second address is still not a bank.
An empty Desktop is not a reason to skip the CISA ransomware reporting page or a report at the FBI IC3 desk. The silence is theirs. The files are already locked. Another night of searching for a flyer will not change the bytes.
If this is a company machine, tell counsel and your incident lead. If this is a home PC, tell the people whose files lived on it. Change passwords from a clean device. Watch bank and email alerts. Opening those two inboxes is not useful work. Keeping the .prinzeugen names intact is. The locker already finished. The missing note does not give you a second chance to bargain.

There is no ransom note. No txt. No html.
The strain is a Go locker. It uses ChaCha20-Poly1305, with a unique random per file. It self-deletes after encryption. Access in public reporting starts with compromised RDP, then remote management software. Researchers published two out-of-band inboxes: prinzeugen@mail2tor.co and standardbankcc@cock.li. The second one is an attacker inbox, not a bank. ROOTBOY is a researcher label, not a confirmed identity, and not a person you should message. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain.
Do not pay. Do not mail those inboxes. Do not invent a note. Do not rename the pile in bulk. If you take one sentence with you, take this. A folder of names ending in .prinzeugen, plus a Desktop with no note to follow, is ransomware on the first sighting. Treat it that way before anyone offers to write the flyer the locker never dropped.
