Obscura EXPOSED: .obscura Files, README-OBSCURA.txt, and a 240-Hour Clock

You open Documents the way you did yesterday. The first photo should still be 1.jpg. The vacation shot should still be photo.jpg. The invoice should still be invoice.pdf. The tax sheet should still be taxes.xlsx. Instead every familiar name has a second ending tacked on. 1.jpg is now 1.jpg.obscura. A small text file named README-OBSCURA.txt is sitting in the same folder, as if it has always belonged there.

That is the trap, not a glitch.

This page is for the hour those names appear. It is not a miracle key. It is a map of the trap, so the note does not become your incident plan.

Overview

Obscura ransomware locks the files first. Then it keeps the old name and the old type, and hangs .obscura on the end. Then it drops README-OBSCURA.txt and talks like a recovery desk that already stole the house. The note is a storefront. It claims the network is encrypted. It claims data was stolen. It names employee passports, internal documents, financials, and NAS copies as the haul. It starts a 240-hour clock and says stolen data will leak if you do not answer in time. It tells you to pay for a decrypt, an infiltration report, and recovery help. It says police and agencies will not help. It warns they will wipe servers if you reach for external backups. Then it prints a Tox ID and leaves the Victim ID blank. Then it leaves the Blog line blank. Then it signs off Obscura. 2025.

If you are staring at a pile of .obscura files and that text note, you are in a ransom incident, not a broken disk and not a Windows pop-up. The folder is the evidence. The note is a checkout. Stay with the folder, not with the script.

The first tell is the rename. In the sample used for this page, 1.jpg becomes 1.jpg.obscura. photo.jpg becomes photo.jpg.obscura. invoice.pdf becomes invoice.pdf.obscura. taxes.xlsx becomes taxes.xlsx.obscura. family.mp4 becomes family.mp4.obscura. You can still read what the file used to be. You cannot open it. Windows may call the type an OBSCURA File and offer a useless “choose an app” box. An app cannot talk locked bytes back into a JPEG.

The second tell is the note. After the files are locked, the malware drops README-OBSCURA.txt into the same folders. README sounds like documentation. OBSCURA sounds like a brand that already owns the room. Put them together and the first English you can still read after the photos break is a sales flyer. The flyer is meant to be opened. It is not meant to be trusted.

The body of that sample is a leak note wearing a help-desk badge. It says the network was encrypted. It says data was stolen. It lists employee passports, internal documents, financials, and NAS files as if a shopping receipt were a lab report. It gives you 240 hours to respond or the stolen data leaks. It sells three products in one breath: a decrypt, an infiltration report, and recovery help. It tells you police and agencies will not help. It threatens a wipe if you try external backups. The printed contact is a Tox ID: AE55FC0EB1C25A5B081650108F9081E236DECE1CE08D2E185A6F15B9FB48E700210BED374643. The Victim ID field is blank. The Blog field is blank. This page will not invent a Session ID, an onion, a wallet, or a victim price to finish those lines. The closer is Obscura. 2025.

That is the whole costume. A locked folder of .obscura names. A README-OBSCURA.txt file that talks like a recovery brief and a leak threat at the same time. A 240-hour clock. A stolen-data list. A triple ask. A Tox door. Two blank fields where a ticket and a blog should be. A signature with a year. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. There is no printed wallet. There is no printed ransom figure. There is no reason to write that Tox ID today because a text file told you to. There is no reason to treat 240 hours as a fuse you must honor.

The .obscura name is the first warning

Most lockers pick an extension so you notice the change in seconds. Obscura uses .obscura. The extra cruelty is how readable the listing stays. You do not have to decode anything. You can still see 1.jpg inside 1.jpg.obscura. You can still see the invoice. You can still see the word taxes. The familiar words are still in the folder. The files are not familiar anymore.

Do not treat that readable name as a fix. Do not strip .obscura off the end and expect Photos or Excel to open the file. Do not run a bulk “extension fixer” you found in an ad. The name is a label. The lock is in the content. Editing the label can make a later trusted tool have a harder time matching the file to what it was. Leave the locked copies as they are until you have a clean machine and a plan that does not start in a criminal chat.

The extra ending also does advertising. Anyone who sees photo.jpg.obscura next to README-OBSCURA.txt can pretend they already have your case. A later fake helper will quote the extension back to you as if that were expertise. The extension is public. It is sitting in the folder. Quoting it proves nothing except that they can read a listing.

README-OBSCURA.txt is a sales floor, not a help file

The ransom note is a plain text file with a name that sounds like documentation. README-OBSCURA.txt wants the first click after the panic. Plenty of real software drops a README. This one uses that habit against you. It is meant to be the first English you can still read when the photos will not open.

Double-clicking it opens Notepad. That is why a panicked first click feels like opening the help page. It is not help. It is the demand, written so it looks official enough to follow. The filename is built to look like paperwork. README. OBSCURA. A .txt ending Windows already trusts. Paperwork is easier to obey than a threat.

Keep the file on disk. Then close it. Do not treat it as a set of steps you should follow. Do not tidy the filename. Do not shorten it to “the readme” when you write the incident down. Copy README-OBSCURA.txt the way you would copy a serial off a stolen laptop. That string is how a responder matches this locker. It is not a coupon you redeem by writing the printed Tox ID.

The 240-hour clock is theater, not a fuse you must honor

The note gives you 240 hours to respond or stolen data leaks. That number is meant to sit on your chest. Ten days sounds precise. Precise sounds like a real fuse. A fuse sounds like something you have to beat. You do not owe that clock. A countdown printed by the people who locked the files is still a sales timer. It is not a court date. It is not a regulator deadline. It is not a reason to skip counsel, skip a clean machine, and sprint into Tox.

Do not start a personal countdown on a kitchen whiteboard because the flyer did. Do not stay awake to “make the 240.” Do not let a stranger tell you the real remaining hours, as if they had a dashboard into your case. The clock is copy. Copy can be repeated by anyone who opened the same text file. Repeating 240 hours is not expertise. It is reading.

A leak threat with a timer is still a leak threat even if you never write back. Treat the theft claim as a possible data incident for the people whose files lived on the machine. That work happens with counsel and official desks. It does not happen inside a Tox chat the note handed you.

Stolen passports and NAS files are a shopping list

The sample claims data was stolen. It names employee passports, internal documents, financials, and NAS copies. That list is meant to feel specific. Specific feels verified. Verified feels like they already walked the building. A shopping list in a ransom note is still a shopping list. It is not a chain-of-custody report. It is not proof they have the passports. It is not proof they have the NAS. It is a set of words chosen because they hurt.

Do not confirm the list for them. Do not send a sample passport page “so they can match it.” Do not send a folder tree from the NAS “so they know you are serious.” Those attachments are the product. The note already named the categories. You do not need to fill the cart.

If those categories lived on the locked systems, handle that as a possible exposure with the people who own the data. That is different from obeying the flyer. The flyer wants you to treat the list as a receipt you can only void by paying. A receipt they wrote is not a receipt you honor.

The Tox ID is checkout, not support

The printed contact is a Tox ID: AE55FC0EB1C25A5B081650108F9081E236DECE1CE08D2E185A6F15B9FB48E700210BED374643. That is the aisle. A private messenger puts you in a room they own, on an account they can delete, with a thread they can screenshot and reuse. Chat would feel like a ticket. This chat is not a ticket. It is how a locked photo becomes a negotiation.

Do not install Tox because the note said to. Do not paste that long string into a client “just to see if it is live.” Do not send a test file to prove you are a real victim. Do not paste a folder listing into a new message. Do not argue about the 240-hour clock as if extra time were available. Those digits belong to the people who locked the files. Writing them is the product.

The handle is branding, the same way .obscura is branding. Anyone can stand up a lookalike Tox ID after a wave of locked folders. Writing the first message does not start a warranty. It starts a conversation you cannot enforce. The leak clock is how they make that first message feel late already. Late is how a larger bill can still appear later, even when the original note printed no price.

The blank Victim ID is not a ticket you should fill

The note prints a Victim ID field and leaves it blank. In the sample that field is not a code, not a hex string, and not a case number. It is empty. This page will not invent an ID to make the screenshot look complete. A missing ID is not a puzzle. It is how that sample actually shipped.

Do not invent a number because other ransomware families print one. Do not type a hostname, a Windows username, or a random string into that field “so they can find your key.” Do not write the Tox ID to ask what your Victim ID was supposed to be. Filling a blank they left empty is how a locked folder becomes a conversation. The blank is theirs. Leave it blank in the report too, and say so.

Copycats love a blank. They will sell you an ID. They will say the decryptor will not run until you have one. They will generate a pretty string and ask you to paste it back. That is still the same market. The published sample did not hand out a Victim ID as a quote. Do not finish it for them.

The blank Blog line is not a URL you should invent

The note also leaves the Blog field blank. This page will not invent a leak-site URL, an onion, or a news page to sit in that gap. A missing blog is not a scavenger hunt. It is an empty line on a flyer. Empty lines are where later strangers do their best work. They will “find” the blog for you. They will send a link. They will say your company is already listed. A link they typed is still a link they typed.

Do not search random strings plus the word blog until a crime stall appears. Do not open a hidden site a comment pasted. Do not pay to “take a listing down” on a page the original note never printed. If a later helper fills the Blog line and asks you to visit it before the 240 hours run out, that is a second sales pitch standing in the same doorway.

Keep the blank as evidence. When you describe the incident, say the Blog field was empty. That fact is part of how this sample looks. Completing it is not your job.

Decrypt, the report, and recovery help are one ransom

The note does not print a figure. It prints a bundle. Pay for a decrypt. Pay for an infiltration report. Pay for recovery help. Three labels make the ask feel like a professional package. A package feels like a vendor. A vendor feels like someone who will still pick up next week. None of that is a contract. It is three ways to say send money to the people who locked invoice.pdf.obscura.

This page will not invent a victim price to hang on that bundle. A missing number is not a discount you should request in Tox. It is how the sample actually reads. The CISA StopRansomware Guide is blunt about this kind of squeeze. Paying does not ensure the files come back, does not ensure the systems are clean, and does not ensure anyone on the other side keeps a promise. An “infiltration report” from the same crew is not a pentest you commissioned. Recovery help from the same crew is not an incident lead you hired.

Do not split the bundle in your head and decide the report is the “reasonable” part. Do not buy only the decrypt and skip the rest, as if a menu were real. Do not buy only the report because the 240-hour leak scare felt louder than the locked photos. All three labels are the same checkout.

Police will not help is a sales line

The note claims police and agencies will not help. That sentence is there so you skip the adults in the room. If official desks are useless, then Tox is the only aisle. If official desks are useless, then 240 hours feels like the only remaining clock. The claim is not a legal opinion. It is a store sign.

Do not treat a criminal flyer as advice about reporting. Do not wait out the 240 hours because the note said agencies are pointless. Do not let a later helper repeat “the police cannot help with Obscura” as if that were a credential. Anyone who opened README-OBSCURA.txt can recite that line. Reciting it proves they can read. It does not prove they can reverse 1.jpg.obscura.

If this is a company machine, tell counsel and your incident lead. If this is a home PC, tell the people whose files lived on it. Official reporting is a separate decision from the folder in front of you. The people who locked the files do not get a vote on that decision.

Wipe the servers is a threat, not a policy

The sample warns they will wipe servers if you use external backups. That line is meant to freeze the one move that actually helps. Backups are how a locker loses leverage. So the flyer attacks the backups. It does not need to be true to do that job. It only needs to make you pause with your hand on a drive you have not plugged in yet.

Do not plug a clean backup into the locked machine to “test” whether the threat is real. Testing is how a second copy gets the same .obscura ending. Do not write Tox to ask if backups are “allowed.” Do not destroy your own offline copies because a text file said they would punish you for having them. A threat about wipes is intimidation. It is not a reason to finish their checkout, and it is not a reason to throw away the one path that does not run through their chat.

Leave offline copies offline. Leave the locked copies locked. The wipe line is part of the pitch. It is not a procedure you should run for them.

Obscura. 2025. is a signature, not a warranty

The note ends Obscura. 2025. A year on a flyer feels like a brand that will still exist in December. A closing signature feels like a company. Companies have refunds. This is still a text file dropped next to locked photos. The year on the page is 2025 even if you are reading it later. Do not “correct” it. Copy it the way it prints. That closer is an identifier. It is not a promise that a key will arrive if you write before the 240 hours run out.

Later ads will quote the signature. Later helpers will add a new year so they sound current. Keep the printed closer. Do not let anyone refresh it for a fee. A dated sign-off does not make README-OBSCURA.txt into a contract.

How The Attack Works

The shop is simple once you stop reading it as a rescue. Lock the files. Brand the names with .obscura. Drop a README that talks like a recovery brief. Claim the network is down and the data already walked out. Name passports, internal documents, financials, and NAS. Start a 240-hour leak clock. Sell a decrypt, a report, and recovery help as one bundle. Tell you police will not help. Threaten a wipe if you touch backups. Print a Tox ID. Leave Victim ID blank. Leave Blog blank. Sign Obscura. 2025. Then wait for someone else to fill the blanks.

1. The lock keeps the old name so you recognize the loss

Obscura encrypts the files it wants as leverage, then appends .obscura. That is why 1.jpg is still readable as 1.jpg.obscura. The operators want you to inventory the damage in seconds. They want you to see the photo, the invoice, the tax sheet, and the family video in one glance. A coded filename can confuse you. A readable filename makes you feel the theft.

If only one folder looks wrong, do not assume the rest of the disk is safe. Ransomware walks trees. It hits Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Downloads, and any drive letter it can reach, including a USB stick you forgot was plugged in. Extra disks that were not mounted should stay that way. Do not plug in a copy “just to check.” Checking is how the extra copy gets the same .obscura ending.

Double-clicking a renamed file does not bring the photo back. The thumbnail may already look broken. Excel may ask for a workbook that is still sitting in the same folder, only the bytes inside are no longer a workbook. That broken open is the first proof. The second proof is the extra ending. Together they are enough. You do not need to write the Tox ID to confirm what you are looking at.

2. README-OBSCURA.txt turns a break-in into a ticket

Once the names are branded, the malware needs a voice. README-OBSCURA.txt is that voice. It sits in the same folders as the locked files so the first sort puts help next to harm. On many machines a text file sorts near the top, especially with a name in capitals. You open it because it looks like the only thing that still speaks English.

The body is long enough to feel like a briefing and short enough to finish before a relative walks into the room. Network encrypted. Data stolen. Passports. Internal documents. Financials. NAS. 240 hours. Decrypt plus report plus recovery. Police will not help. Backups will be punished. Tox. Blank Victim ID. Blank Blog. Obscura. 2025. Each beat closes a door. The lock closes “maybe Windows just glitched.” The stolen-data list closes “maybe it is only a rename.” The clock closes “maybe I should wait overnight.” The Tox line closes “maybe there is a local tool.”

Notice what the note does not give you. It does not give you a company, a refund policy, or a way to prove the other side will ever send a key. It does not give you a filled Victim ID. It does not give you a blog URL. It does not give you a wallet. It does not give you a price. It gives you a tone that says this is already decided. That tone is the product. Read the file as a sales flyer. Then close it. Keep it on disk.

3. Network encrypted and data stolen is the double squeeze

Plenty of lockers only sell the lock. This one sells the lock and the leak in the same paragraph. Your files will not open, and your data is already gone, and the clock has started. That pairing is meant to kill the thought that you can restore from somewhere else and walk away. If the network is “encrypted,” restore feels pointless. If the data is “stolen,” restore feels incomplete. The flyer wants both feelings at once.

You do not have to argue the claim with a text file. You need to stop treating the file as a technician. A locker can encrypt what it can reach. A locker can also lie about what it copied. Either way, the next step is not Tox. The next step is a real incident plan that does not start with the people who wrote the threat.

4. Employee passports, internal docs, financials, NAS is the hurt list

After the double squeeze, the note names categories that make a manager’s stomach drop. Employee passports. Internal documents. Financials. NAS. Those words are chosen because they sound like a breach you cannot hide. They are still attacker copy. Naming a category is not the same as proving possession. It is also not a reason to start mailing samples into a chat they own.

People hear passports and go looking for “Obscura leak” in ads. That search is the next trap. A site that promises to show you the stolen files because a ransom note printed the categories is selling the same fear in a different window. Leave the locked files alone. Do not feed them to a mystery app that asked for admin rights because a text file named a NAS.

5. The 240-hour clock is the printed fuse

Plenty of lockers hide the timer until you write. This one prints 240 hours up front. That is not kindness. A printed clock removes the last excuse for delay. You do not have to “ask how long you have.” You already know. The remaining step, in their script, is the Tox message before the hours run out. The note has already done the quoting.

Ten-day clocks also travel well. 240 hours is easy to repeat in a family group, easy to treat like a parking ticket with a due date, easy to round into “maybe we can just get this over with.” It is still a timer set by the people who locked family.mp4.obscura. It still does not produce a warranty. Fast is how they get people who think of themselves as too careful to pay a big crew.

Do not convert 240 hours in your head into a personal deadline and decide silence is already a mistake. The number is theirs. The files are already locked. Another afternoon of panic will not change the bytes in photo.jpg.obscura.

6. The Tox ID is the door they want you to walk through

The recovery step in the sample is chat. Contact them on Tox with AE55FC0EB1C25A5B081650108F9081E236DECE1CE08D2E185A6F15B9FB48E700210BED374643. That is the whole door. It looks like support because support uses messengers. Criminal shops use messengers too, because a thread is where a blank Victim ID becomes a negotiation and a locked photo becomes a sample they asked you to attach.

Do not write that Tox ID. Do not create a throwaway account “just to see.” Do not send a screenshot of Explorer to prove the lock. They already chose the extension. They already chose the note name. A photo of README-OBSCURA.txt sitting next to 1.jpg.obscura does not make you a verified customer. It makes you a person still following the flyer.

If someone later says they will “talk to Obscura for you” through that same Tox string, that is a broker pitch. Brokers need you in the same funnel. You do not owe them a seat. Report the incident through official desks. Let counsel decide if contact is ever required for a specific legal reason. That decision is not yours to make from the Documents folder at midnight.

7. The blank Victim ID and blank Blog keep you guessing

The sample has a Victim ID line with nothing on it. It has a Blog line with nothing on it. Those missing lines are not a typing error. They are a shorter path to the chat. Other families print a ticket so you feel managed. Obscura leaves the ticket empty and names the Tox. You are supposed to feel that the only remaining step is to write and ask what your ID should have been.

Do not add those missing pieces yourself. Do not invent a Session ID because some other locker uses Session. Do not invent an onion because some other locker prints one. Do not invent a wallet because you think a ransom note is incomplete without one. Do not invent a victim price so the bundle has a sticker. The published flyer left those fields empty. Leave them uninvented.

8. The triple ask is checkout with extra labels

Decrypt. Infiltration report. Recovery help. Three products let a later message upsell you. First they want you in Tox. Then they want a “report fee.” Then they want a “priority decrypt.” Then they want “help rebuilding the NAS.” The original note already bundled the three. You do not need to collect them one at a time. You need to recognize the bundle as ransom.

A report from the same people who claim they stole passports is not a gift. It is another file they can delay, redact, or fake. Recovery help from the same people who threaten to wipe servers is not a retainer. It is another hour they can bill after you already answered the clock. Do not buy any piece of it.

9. Police will not help and the wipe line close the exits

After the bundle, the note attacks the two places people actually go. Official help, and backups. If police are useless, you skip the report. If backups trigger a wipe, you skip the restore. Both lines point back at Tox. That is the whole geometry. Scare, clock, chat, then block the doors that do not pay.

You do not need to argue with those sentences. You need to stop treating them as policy. A flyer cannot cancel a backup that was never mounted. A flyer cannot forbid a report you file from a clean device. Leave the intimidation on the page. Keep the offline copies away from the locked machine. Keep the official work off their messenger.

10. Third parties will sell an Obscura conversation

After a ransomware incident, search results fill up with companies that say they can decrypt Obscura or “all .obscura files.” Some of those shops are ordinary overpriced consultants. Plenty are a second scam. They will quote README-OBSCURA.txt so they sound close to the case. They will mention 240 hours. They will mention passports and NAS. They will mention the Tox ID as if they already called the original crew. They will offer to fill the blank Victim ID. They will invent a blog URL. They will ask for a sample file, a remote-access session, or a deposit.

A demo that “unlocks one file” is not proof they can unlock the vacation photo. Anyone can open one junk file they control. Anyone can send you a Tox string that makes a chat window appear. A chat window is not Photos opening photo.jpg again. If a later message skips the original Tox ID and asks for coin over ordinary mail, that is still the same market, or a copycat standing in the same doorway. Do not answer. Do not help them fill the Blog line the public sample left blank on purpose.

A real public decryptor, when one exists, shows up on an official project page that already existed before your incident. It does not need a Tox handshake. It does not need a 240-hour sprint. If the pitch is “we can decrypt, pay us first,” you are still in the market the ransomware created. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. Until a trusted project publishes one, treat any site that says “we already have the Obscura key” as a second sales pitch.

11. Payment and writing that Tox close nothing

Paying a stranger for a private key is not a guarantee. The people who send the note can take the money and disappear. They can send a string that only makes a decryptor show an error. They can come back later and lock the same machine again. A Tox thread makes that outcome easier, not harder. You cannot leave a review on a criminal messenger.

Writing that Tox ID is the free version of the same dead end. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. Starting a thread does not rebuild a JPEG. It only keeps you in their story while the rest of the disk still needs a real plan. Honoring the 240-hour clock does not rebuild it either. The clock is theirs. The files are still locked.

If this is a company machine, tell counsel and your incident lead. If this is a home PC, tell the people whose files lived on it. Change passwords from a clean device. Watch bank and email alerts. Opening that Tox ID again is not useful work. It is the checkout, even when the Victim ID and the Blog line are still blank, and even when the note never printed a price.

What To Do If You Have Fallen Victim

Do not write that Tox ID. Do not treat the 240-hour clock as a real deadline you must meet. Do not invent a blog URL to finish README-OBSCURA.txt. Do not invent a Victim ID, a Session ID, an onion, a wallet, or a victim price. Do not pay this leak note. Do not send a test file. Do not send a passport scan to “match the haul.” If you already opened Tox before you found this page, stop there. Do not pay a deposit to “hold the original 240 hours” for anyone who quotes the note.

    After downloading, double-click the iExplore.exe icon to kill malicious processes. In most cases, downloaded files are saved to the Downloads folder.

  4. Enable “Scan for Rootkits”

    Before scanning, turn on rootkit detection so Malwarebytes can find even the most hidden threats. Click the Settings gear icon on the left side of the screen.

This ransomware will attempt to delete all shadow copies when you first start any executable on your computer after becoming infected. Thankfully, the infection is not always able to remove the shadow copies, so you should continue to try restoring your files using this method.

    Open ShadowExplorer and then from the top bar select the drive where the files that you want to save are located, then select from the snapshot available one previous to this infection.

    Once you have found a copy of the original file or folder, right-click on it and the select “Export”. A window will prompt you where you want to save the file or folder.

Keep every .obscura name exactly as it is. Do not bulk-rename 1.jpg.obscura back to 1.jpg, or photo.jpg.obscura back to photo.jpg, or invoice.pdf.obscura back to a normal PDF, or taxes.xlsx.obscura back to a spreadsheet, or family.mp4.obscura back to a video. Stripping the extra ending is not a repair. It can make a later trusted tool worse, not better. The original name is already sitting in front of .obscura. You do not need to edit it to know what you lost.

Keep README-OBSCURA.txt with the locked files, and keep one .obscura sample next to it for identification. Do not “clean up” every copy of the note. Do not fill in a Victim ID or a Blog URL so the flyer looks complete. The blanks, and the Tox string on your disk, are part of how you prove this was this strain and not a different locker that only sounds similar. Keep the contact marks as identifiers: the Tox ID AE55FC0EB1C25A5B081650108F9081E236DECE1CE08D2E185A6F15B9FB48E700210BED374643, the 240-hour leak clock, the stolen-data list, and the closer Obscura. 2025. Those artifacts are evidence. They are not instructions you should carry out.

Do not write that Tox ID. Do not treat 240 hours as a fuse you must beat. Do not invent a blog URL. Do not ask a friend to message them “just to see.” A printed leak clock is still a ransom timer. A calm Tox string is still the people who locked the files. If a later message quotes README-OBSCURA.txt and offers “the real blog,” that is still the same shop. If a later message skips the original Tox ID and asks for coin over a different chat, that is still the same shop, or a copycat standing in the same doorway. Do not pay this leak note.

If someone claims they can already decrypt Obscura files for a fee because they can recite 240 hours and the passport list, they are selling a report, not a key. If they mention that Tox ID as proof they “already called the crew,” they read the same note you did. Do not answer. Do not complete their checkout. Do not help them fix the flyer.

If Windows still offers to pick an app for the .obscura type, decline it. There is no player for that ending.

The Bottom Line

Obscura ransomware is a locker with a readable filename, a README that sells a leak, and a checkout that points at Tox. It keeps the old name and appends .obscura. 1.jpg becomes 1.jpg.obscura. The Blog is blank. This page will not invent a Session ID, an onion, a wallet, or a victim price. The closer is Obscura. 2025. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain.

Do not write that Tox ID. Do not honor the 240-hour clock. Do not invent a blog URL. Do not pay this leak note. Do not rename the pile in bulk. If you take one sentence with you, take this. A folder of names ending in .obscura, plus README-OBSCURA.txt with a 240-hour leak threat, a Tox door, blank Victim ID, blank Blog, and the signature Obscura. 2025., is ransomware on the first sighting. Treat it that way before anyone offers to fill the empty lines.

10 Rules to Avoid Online Scams

Here are 10 practical safety rules to help you avoid malware, online shopping scams, crypto scams, and other online fraud. Each tip includes a quick “if you already got hit” action.

  1. Stop and verify before you click, log in, download, or pay.

    Most scams win by creating urgency. Verify using a trusted method: type the website address yourself, use the official app, or call a known number (not the one in the message).

    If you already clicked: close the page, do not enter passwords, and run a malware scan.

  2. Keep your operating system, browser, and apps updated.

    If you saw a scary “update now” pop-up: close it and update only through your device settings or the official app store.

  3. Use layered protection: antivirus plus an ad blocker.
