Scammers have been targeting consumers by impersonating popular cable, TV, and internet providers like Spectrum in an attempt to steal money and personal information. Thousands of reports have been filed about this prevalent scam. This article will cover how to recognize if a caller is a fraudulent impersonator and not your real provider.
Understanding the fake Cable Company Phone Call Scam
The scam typically starts with potential victims receiving an unsolicited phone call, recorded robocall voicemail, or text message claiming to be from their cable company. The scammers will use spoofing technology to manipulate the caller ID so it appears the call is coming directly from the real provider’s customer service number.
When victims answer the call or return a voicemail, the scammer will acknowledge them by name and rattle off some account details to appear familiar with them. They claim that due to a special promotional offer for loyal customers, the victim qualifies for a significantly lowered monthly bill and payment rate.
However, to lock in this discounted price, the scammer insists you must prepay the bill by 1-2 months upfront immediately or the offer will expire. If pressed for details on the promotion, they will cite a fictional partnership with varying gift card companies.
When gullible victims call back the number left by the scammer, an elaborate unofficial call center answers acting as the cable company. The scammers reiterate you must pay the “prepayment” via gift cards from specified retailers, and promise to apply the funds to your bill.
They provide detailed instructions to buy multiple gift cards at pharmacies, grocery stores, etc. Then you must call back and read the gift card numbers to the representative to cover the prepayment. However, no legitimate TV or internet company requires upfront gift card payments to lower bills.
The scammers quickly steal and redeem the gift card funds, while the victim never receives any discounted bill or price reduction. Any personal information also provided to the scammers facilitates further frauds and identity theft.
How to Identify This Prepayment Scam
Here are some indicators that a call claiming you must prepay bill amounts may be a scam attempt:
- You receive an unsolicited call or voicemail with an offer to reduce your monthly bill as an existing customer. Real promotions are advertised openly.
- They demand unusual forms of payment like gift cards and insist it’s for a special promotion when you call back. Genuine providers accept standard payment methods.
- The caller becomes aggressive or pressures immediate payment if you express skepticism.
- The callback number goes to an unofficial overseas call center rather than your provider’s documented support lines.
- They ask for account passwords, Social Security numbers, or other private data unrelated to taking a payment. Real reps already have your billing details.
- You cannot find evidence of the special prepayment promotion advertised on your provider’s official website or other legitimate channels.
- No new reduced monthly price gets reflected on your subsequent statements after paying the scammers.
If a caller exhibits any red flags, hang up immediately. Do not pay them or hand over any form of payment or personal data.
What to Do If You Already Paid the Scammers
If you already purchased gift cards or provided payment to someone impersonating your cable or internet provider, take these steps quickly:
- Call your real provider to notify them of the scam and check that your account has not been impacted.
- Contact your bank and credit card companies to block any linked accounts that may have been compromised to make the purchases. Monitor statements closely.
- Report the gift card numbers stolen to the retailer’s customer service so they can potentially deactivate the cards.
- Check your credit reports and place fraud alerts in case the scammers try opening accounts in your name after stealing personal information.
- Make sure your account passwords are changed if any were revealed to the scammers when paying them.
- File detailed scam reports with the FTC, FCC, and other relevant agencies to aid investigations.
- Leave online reviews about your experience to warn others not to make payments to callers impersonating providers.

Install Malwarebytes
When the download finishes, open your Downloads folder and double-click the MBSetup file. If Windows shows a User Account Control pop-up, click “Yes” to allow the installation.
Follow the On-Screen Prompts to Install Malwarebytes
The setup wizard will walk you through a few quick screens:

Choose where you’re installing the program — “Personal Computer” or “Work Computer” — then click Next.

Optional: Check for rootkits with a Custom Scan

Rootkit scanning isn’t available on Windows devices with ARM processors.
Start the Scan
Click the blue Scan button. Malwarebytes will automatically update its virus database and start checking your computer for malware.

Wait for the Scan to Finish
The scan checks your entire system for browser hijackers and other malicious programs, so it can take 5 to 20 minutes depending on your computer. Feel free to do something else — just check back occasionally to see the progress.

Quarantine the Detected Threats
When the scan is done, you’ll see a list of everything Malwarebytes found — malware, adware, and potentially unwanted programs. Click the “Quarantine” button to remove all of them at once.
Malwarebytes will now remove the malicious files and registry entries and move them safely into quarantine.

Restart Your Computer
Some threats can only be fully removed after a reboot. If Malwarebytes asks you to restart, click Yes. Once you’re logged back in, Malwarebytes has finished removing the threats it found.

Open the Malwarebytes setup file
When the download finishes, open your Downloads folder and double-click the setup file to begin the installation.

Malwarebytes will now start scanning your phone for adware and other malicious apps. This process can take a few minutes, so we suggest you do something else and periodically check on the status of the scan to see when it is finished.

Remove the detected apps.
When the scan has been completed, you will see a list of the threats that Malwarebytes for Android has detected. Next to each detected item, tap the menu icon (three dots), then choose to uninstall the app or delete the file. Android then asks you to confirm. Tap OK or Uninstall to remove the app.

Restart your phone.
When the detected apps are removed, restart your phone if Malwarebytes asks you to. Then check whether the problems you noticed have stopped.

- Only as a last resort, reset your phone to factory settings. Read the warning below first.
- Back up your photos, videos, files, and messages, for example to your Google account or a computer.
- Make sure you know your Google account email and password. The phone asks for them after the reset. If you changed the password recently, Google recommends waiting 24 hours before you reset.
- On a Samsung phone, also make sure you know your Samsung account password.
- If you use an authenticator app for two-step verification, move your accounts to another device or save your backup codes first.
