I am considering trying out some of the commercial DNS providers which claim to filter malware and advertisements. Services such as NextDNS, ControlD and Quad9.
I thought they might help to tighten up security- especially some of my IoT devices such as security cameras.

Its not always clear how these services compare, or if they actually live up to their claims. I suspect some of it depends on where they get their filtering lists from and how up-to-date these are.

There doesn't seem to be much independent testing of these services. This forum contains private individual's experiences of using some of them, but these accounts are difficult to compare. Do any independent labs ever check DNS providers?

Sadly it seems no.

Services such as NextDNS, ControlD and Quad9.
We have multiple times discussed about best dns providers here at MalwareTips, you just should post a thread asking wich suite is best for you....im sure we recommend the pros and cons of each of them

There are bunch of NextDNS users here
Few ControlD users
even i have tried every free dns available

so if you trust into members of forums youl find the best suite for yourself

Cloudflare zero trust looks a bit complicated.
Is it suitable for home use? Would it help to filter out malware?

I'm currently testing the free Cloudflare Zero Trust plan. It can be a little challenging to use, but it offers powerful features. I'm only using Zero Trust's DNS-based protection, which is sufficient for me. It was fairly simple to set up using the help files. It provides protection against malware, phishing, unwanted content, and more, but it does not have adblocking capabilities. I believe you can create policies or add third-party ad/tracking filters with their more advanced protection, such as Network.

I've started a Cloudflare Gateway thread for further discussion.
