I've loaded java updates from java website. When I run mcafee internet security it tell me I need to install Java runtime environment 1.8.0: update_40

Your config is low but here is tips to make it batter :)
  • Install any on-demand scanners example Zemana,EEK,MBAM
  • Remove all adblocks and install uBlock. It's better alternative.
  • Install Https everywhere to your browser.
  • Use LastPass to organize all passwords
  • Install ccleaner to cleaning or PrivaZer
  • Install sandboxie
To your problem. Try remove Java and install via offline installer.

For browser you may use Google Chrome or Opera and add a backup if one of them became problematic (Firefox)

Addons well either go for Adguard and HTTPS Everywhere.

In case of Java as you download the program, you should have the latest version upon checking the built in updater and McAfee probably not yet updated to detect Java as current.
