Amnesia Trojan Stealer – What It Is and How To Remove It

Lurking in the digital shadows, a cunning new hacker’s tool called Amnesia has emerged as a formidable cyber threat. When installed on a computer, Amnesia works as an information stealer – covertly gathering users’ login credentials, financial details, and other sensitive data before secretly transmitting it back to hackers. This gives cybercriminals full access to bank accounts, private messages, and more.

With its stealthy tactics, shape-shifting abilities to disguise itself, and skill at covering its tracks, Amnesia has proven adept at looting people’s personal information without them ever knowing.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll uncover everything you need to know about how Amnesia operates, how to spot an infection, and most critically, how to lock it out of your devices for good.

Windows Task Manager

Overview: What is Amnesia and Why is it Dangerous?

Amnesia is an information-stealing Trojan – a type of malware that resides in an infected computer and gathers data in order to send it to the attacker. Typical targets are credentials used in online banking services, social media sites, emails, or FTP accounts.

This makes Amnesia incredibly dangerous, as it can secretly loot login details, financial information, and other private data for weeks or months without detection. The consequences can be devastating – from stolen money to violated privacy to damaged reputations.

Amnesia sets itself apart from other malware through its stealthy infection tactics, chameleonic abilities to disguise itself once installed, skill at exfiltrating data, and evasive maneuvers to cover its tracks.

Slippery Infection Method

Amnesia typically sneaks onto target devices by posing as legitimate downloads, email attachments, or even hiding within ads. Unlike spammy malware, it uses clever social engineering to get unwitting users to voluntarily install what they believe is a normal program or document.

Chameleonic Abilities

Once installed, Amnesia is a master of disguise. It morphs and blends in seamlessly with normal system processes, avoiding detection by antivirus software. This makes it extremely hard to spot.

Data Exfiltration Skills

Armed with users’ credentials and personal information, Amnesia can secretly transmit stolen data from infected devices back to its operators. This is its purpose – to infiltrate systems and leach sensitive data like a digital vampire.

Evasive Tactics

Amnesia actively sabotages efforts to uncover it by disabling security services. It covers its tracks by erasing logs, browser history, and other evidence of its malicious activities. This further cloaks it in secrecy.

With this combination of stealth, subterfuge, and digital theft capabilities, Amnesia has earned its reputation as one of the most dangerous info-stealing Trojans currently threatening computer users worldwide. But how might you get infected in the first place?

How Was My Computer Infected With Amnesia?

Amnesia employs a variety of cunning infection vectors to breach computers and start siphoning data. Here are some of the most common methods to watch out for:

  • Email Attachments – Amnesia is frequently distributed through malicious email attachments disguised as innocuous files like documents or images. Opening or downloading these attachments inadvertently installs the Trojan.
  • Malicious Downloads – The malware may be bundled with legitimate-looking software downloads found on shady websites. Once installed, it kicks into gear in the background.
  • Malvertising – Some Amnesia campaigns involve hijacking ads on reputable websites. Simply visiting a compromised site with malicious ads can trigger a drive-by Amnesia download.
  • Exploit Kits – These toolkits exploit browser vulnerabilities to forcefully and stealthily install Amnesia onto computers. Just browsing an infected website can lead to infection.
  • Social Engineering – Amnesia often relies on tricky psychological manipulation to fool users into willingly installing it. This gives it an initial foothold to operate from.

As you can see, Amnesia developers have engineered their Trojan to be adept at infiltrating devices through various means. Staying vigilant is crucial, as something as simple as opening a dodgy email can result in Amnesia compromise.

What To Do If You’re Infected With Amnesia

If you suspect your computer has been compromised by Amnesia, prompt action is essential to limit the damage. Here are the steps to take:

1. Disconnect from The Internet

Immediately unplug your infected device from the internet. This severs the connection between you and the attackers, preventing any further data exfiltration.

2. Scan For Amnesia Using Antivirus Tools

Run a full system scan using updated antivirus software to detect Amnesia components and quarantine/delete them. Top antivirus brands like Malwarebytes and HitmanPro are ideal for this task.

3. Change All Passwords

Assume your credentials have been compromised. Change the passwords for all of your online accounts, ensuring they are strong and unique for each service. Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible for added security.

4. Monitor Accounts Closely

Carefully scrutinize your online accounts over the next few weeks and look for any unauthorized access or suspicious activity. Report anything abnormal to the relevant service.

5. Clean Up Amnesia Damage

Once removed, Amnesia sometimes leaves traces behind like disabled services, corrupted files, or browser tweaks. Identify and remedy anything out of the ordinary.

6. Learn From The Experience

Consider how you initially got infected, then modify your online behavior accordingly to prevent it happening again. Improving security habits is the best long-term defense.

While Amnesia infections can be severe, fast and decisive action can greatly limit the malware’s impact and prevent further damage. With the right response, you can regain control.

How To Completely Remove Amnesia Using Malware Removal Tools

Removing a sophisticated Trojan like Amnesia requires specialist malware removal software to locate and fully eliminate infections. Here is an overview of the removal process:

This malware removal guide may appear overwhelming due to the number of steps and numerous programs that are being used. We have only written it this way to provide clear, detailed, and easy-to-understand instructions that anyone can use to remove malware for free.

Run again sfc /scannow to check if the files were repaired.

STEP 9: Run the Disk Check tool

As a final step, we will utilize the Disk Check tool, commonly referred to as “chkdsk,” to identify and resolve any issues that were caused by malware.

This tool checks your hard disk for errors and can fix any issues it finds. To use the Disk Check tool, you will need to open the command prompt and enter the “chkdsk” command followed by the drive letter (e.g., “chkdsk C:”). You can also add the “/f” flag to the command to instruct the tool to fix any errors it finds. By running the Disk Check tool, you can help ensure that your hard disk is functioning properly and fix any issues that may be causing high disk usage.”
  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.

To open the Command Prompt as an administrator in Windows, type “cmd” in the search bar and then right-click on the Command Prompt result and select “Run as administrator” as shown in the image below. Run CMD As Administrator A User Account Control (UAC) prompt will appear asking for permission to allow the program to run. Click “Yes”.
  2. Type “chkdsk /f /r”

You will now be presented with a black screen called the ‘Administrator: Command Prompt’. On this screen, type “chkdsk /f /r” to repair any errors on your hard drive. chkdsk /f /r
  3. Restart your computer

The Disk Check tool may require you to restart your computer in order to complete the scan and repair process. Type “Y” and click on Enter, then restart the computer. A CHKDSK command can take a long time, especially when performed on larger drives. Once it’s done, however, it will present a summary of results including total disk space, byte allocation, and, most importantly, any errors that were found and corrected. CMD chkdsk f r restart

How to Stay Safe Online

Here are 10 basic security tips to help you avoid malware and protect your device:

  1. Use a good antivirus and keep it up-to-date.

    Shield Guide

It's essential to use a good quality antivirus and keep it up-to-date to stay ahead of the latest cyber threats. We are huge fans of Malwarebytes Premium and use it on all of our devices, including Windows and Mac computers as well as our mobile devices. Malwarebytes sits beside your traditional antivirus, filling in any gaps in its defenses, and providing extra protection against sneakier security threats.

  2. Keep software and operating systems up-to-date.

    updates-guide

Keep your operating system and apps up to date. Whenever an update is released for your device, download and install it right away. These updates often include security fixes, vulnerability patches, and other necessary maintenance.

  3. Be careful when installing programs and apps.

    install guide

Pay close attention to installation screens and license agreements when installing software. Custom or advanced installation options will often disclose any third-party software that is also being installed. Take great care in every stage of the process and make sure you know what it is you're agreeing to before you click "Next."

  4. Install an ad blocker.

    Ad Blocker

Use a browser-based content blocker, like AdGuard. Content blockers help stop malicious ads, Trojans, phishing, and other undesirable content that an antivirus product alone may not stop.

  5. Be careful what you download.

    Trojan Horse

A top goal of cybercriminals is to trick you into downloading malware—programs or apps that carry malware or try to steal information. This malware can be disguised as an app: anything from a popular game to something that checks traffic or the weather.

  6. Be alert for people trying to trick you.

    warning sign

Whether it's your email, phone, messenger, or other applications, always be alert and on guard for someone trying to trick you into clicking on links or replying to messages. Remember that it's easy to spoof phone numbers, so a familiar name or number doesn't make messages more trustworthy.

  7. Back up your data.

    backup sign

Back up your data frequently and check that your backup data can be restored. You can do this manually on an external HDD/USB stick, or automatically using backup software. This is also the best way to counter ransomware. Never connect the backup drive to a computer if you suspect that the computer is infected with malware.

  8. Choose strong passwords.

Use strong and unique passwords for each of your accounts. Avoid using personal information or easily guessable words in your passwords. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your accounts whenever possible.

  9. Be careful where you click.

    cursor sign

Be cautious when clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources. These could potentially contain malware or phishing scams.

  10. Don't use pirated software.

    Shady Guide

Avoid using Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file-sharing programs, keygens, cracks, and other pirated software that can often compromise your data, privacy, or both.

To avoid potential dangers on the internet, it's important to follow these 10 basic safety rules. By doing so, you can protect yourself from many of the unpleasant surprises that can arise when using the web.
