KarryTech Ransomware EXPOSED: README.TXT Wants a Paid Decryptor

You open the folder you use every Monday. The invoices are still listed. The photos are still listed. Then you notice the names. Each one now ends with a long identifier in braces and the word karrytech. A plain text file called README.TXT is sitting on the desktop as if it has always belonged there.

That file is the sales pitch. KarryTech ransomware locks the files first, then tells you the only way back is to buy a unique decryptor from the people who locked them. The note even offers to unlock one worthless file as a “free test.” It is a demo, not a rescue.

This article is for the moment those names appear. It explains the trap in the note, why a paid key is not a contract, and the official recovery path that does not start in a criminal inbox.

Overview

KarryTech ransomware is a file locker. It encrypts documents, photos, spreadsheets, archives, and other everyday files, then changes the filename so you can see the damage at a glance. The new name follows a pattern: the original name, a victim identifier in braces, then the .karrytech extension.

A file that used to be contract.pdf becomes something like contract.pdf.{your-GUID}.karrytech. The GUID is unique to that victim. It is a tracking tag, not a hint that the file can be renamed back to normal. Taking the extra text off the name does not reverse the encryption.

After the files are locked, the malware drops README.TXT. The note says your files, documents, and other important data are encrypted. It says you cannot decrypt them yourself. It says the only method is to purchase a unique decryptor, and that only the people who wrote the note can provide that tool.

That is the trap. The same actors who made the files unreadable now present themselves as the only help desk. They want a private conversation, a proof of life on one junk file, and then a payment for a key they claim is built just for you.

The .karrytech name is the first warning

Ransomware families pick an extension so the victim notices the change in seconds. KarryTech uses .karrytech and parks a victim GUID in the middle of the name. The GUID is the same idea as a ticket number. It lets the criminals tell one locked machine from another if someone later writes to them.

You may see that ID in every locked file on the same computer. That repetition is not a clue that the encryption is weak. It is branding. It also makes a later scam easier. Anyone who sees the GUID can pretend they already “have your case” and offer a paid unlock.

Do not bulk-rename the files to hide the extension. Do not run a random “extension fixer” you found in an ad. Those moves can scramble a file that a later official decryptor might still have been able to read. Leave the locked copies as they are until you have a clean machine and a real recovery plan.

README.TXT sells a unique decryptor

The note is short on comfort and long on certainty. It tells you that you cannot fix this yourself. It tells you that a unique decryptor is the only method. It tells you that only they can give you that decryptor and only they can recover the files.

Unique is doing a lot of work in that sentence. It sounds exclusive, almost personal, as if a technician already built a tool with your name on it. In practice it means they want you to believe there is no public path. It also means they can charge whatever they think you will pay, because they claim the key will not work for anyone else.

Law enforcement and the No More Ransom project have said for years that payment is not guaranteed. The people who send the note can take the money and disappear. They can send a tool that only unlocks a few files. They can come back later and lock the same machine again. A unique decryptor is still a product sold by the attacker.

Two contact lines, zero help desk

The note lists an email address, Kkarrytech@skiff.com, and a Session messenger ID: 0585ae8a3c3a688c78cf2e2b2b7df760630377f29c0b36d999862861bdbf93380d. Those lines are identifiers. They tell you which campaign you are looking at. They are not a support queue.

Skiff-style mail and Session are attractive to criminals because they are easy to treat as disposable and hard for a regular person to trace. Session in particular is built for private messaging. That is useful if you are trying to stay hidden. It is not useful if you are a victim trying to get a receipt, a name, or a refund.

Do not write to that address. Do not open Session to that ID. Do not attach a file “just to see.” Every message is a signal that a person is sitting in front of the locked machine and is willing to talk. That is the moment the price, the pressure, and the follow-up scams begin.

The free test is a sales demo

The note offers to decrypt one file for free. It adds a condition that sounds almost reasonable. The file should not be valuable. That line is doing two jobs at once.

First, it proves they can open something. A junk screenshot or an old PDF coming back looks like competence. Second, it keeps the important files on the table. If they unlocked the payroll sheet or the only copy of a family video, the leverage would drop. They want the leverage.

A free test also trains you to send data to a stranger. Once a file leaves the machine, you cannot control where it goes. Even a “worthless” file can hold a name, an address, a client logo, or a path that tells them what else you have. The demo is cheap for them. It is not free for you.

The scan names you may already have

If Windows Security or another official antivirus has already popped a detection, you may see public names that do not say KarryTech at all. Microsoft reports this family as Ransom:Win32/Beast.AYA!MTB. ESET reports it as Win32/Filecoder.Beast.A.

Those labels put the sample in the Beast ransomware family. They are useful because they confirm you are looking at a filecoder, not a harmless rename glitch. They are not a promise that a free unlock tool is sitting in the same folder as the detection.

No free public decryptor is known for KarryTech. That can change if researchers later recover keys or find a flaw. Until a tool appears on an official project such as No More Ransom, treat any site that says “we already have the KarryTech key” as a second sales pitch.

How The Ransomware Works

You do not need a lab report to understand the sequence. KarryTech follows the same consumer-facing script as many modern lockers. It changes the files, leaves a note, offers a private chat, and then tries to keep you away from anyone who would tell you not to pay.

1. Everyday files lose their normal names

The first thing a person notices is not a skull wallpaper. It is a folder that looks almost right. Word documents, photos, tax PDFs, and zip archives still sit in the same places. The last part of each name is wrong.

KarryTech appends a victim GUID in curly braces and then .karrytech. The original name is usually still visible in front of that extra text, which is why people try to “fix” it by deleting the new ending. The file body is already rewritten. The new name is a label on a lock, not the lock itself.

If the same machine was used as a shared drive or had cloud-sync folders that were online at the time, copies in those places can pick up the same ending. That is why the next move is isolation, not bargaining.

2. README.TXT takes over the conversation

The ransom note is a simple text file named README.TXT. It is meant to be the first thing you double-click when you are already scared. It uses capital urgency, short sentences, and a claim that self-help is impossible.

The note also warns you not to rename encrypted files and not to use third-party tools. It says those actions can cause permanent data loss. Part of that warning is self-serving. The authors want you talking to them, not to a real incident responder. Part of it is still a useful caution in the wrong mouth: mystery decrypt tools from ads can damage files.

The safe reading is narrower than the note wants. Do not take technical advice from the attacker. Do not run a paid “decrypt now” app from a search ad. Do use official antivirus and official public decryptor repositories after the machine is isolated.

3. The unique decryptor is the product

Most consumer ransomware notes ask for money. This one packages the money as software. “Buy a unique decryptor” sounds like a license. It sounds closer to a recovery utility than to a bag of cash. That is the point.

A unique key also gives the criminals a reason to keep the chat private. If the tool is “only for your ID,” then a public page cannot help you. That story collapses the moment a real decryptor is published. Until then, the story is very effective on a person who just lost a decade of photos.

There is no public dollar figure printed as a fixed menu in the note you are likely to see. The price, if they name one later, will be whatever they think your files are worth to you. Treat any number they send as a demand, not as a quote from a vendor with a refund policy.

4. Email and Session are the checkout aisle

The note does not send you to a polished shop with a padlock icon and a return policy. It sends you to Kkarrytech@skiff.com or to Session. Those channels exist so the conversation can happen off the record, on tools the criminals chose.

Once you are in that chat, the script is predictable even if the wording changes. They will ask for the victim ID. They will ask for a test file. They will talk about time. They may claim the price goes up if you wait. They may claim a decrypt company will only take a cut and still come back to them.

None of that is a service agreement. It is a funnel. The correct response is not a clever reply. It is no reply.

5. One junk file comes back so the rest stay hostage

The free test is the moment many people feel hope. A single file opens. The criminals say, see, we are real. Pay for the rest. That demonstration only proves they can unlock a file they locked. It does not prove they will unlock the rest after they are paid.

It also does not prove the rest of your data is still only on your disk. Some ransomware operations copy files before they encrypt them. The KarryTech note you are dealing with is a locker note, not a full leak-site press release. Still, sending extra files to the same inbox is how a locker incident becomes a data incident.

If a friend or a “recovery expert” later asks you to forward that same test file to them, that is the same funnel with a new logo.

6. They try to keep you away from official help

The note’s warning about third-party software is meant to sound like care. In context it is a fence. Official antivirus, a clean backup, and a public decryptor portal are the things that reduce their chance of getting paid. So the note frames outside help as the act that will destroy your files forever.

If the note and the government page disagree, believe the government page. The people who encrypted the files are not a neutral referee.

7. A second shop offers the same miracle

After a ransomware incident, search results and inbox ads fill up with companies that say they can decrypt KarryTech, Beast, or “all .karrytech files.” Some of those shops are ordinary overpriced consultants. Plenty are a second scam.

The second scam has a friendly website and a case manager. It asks for a sample file, a remote-access session, or a deposit. It may even unlock one junk file, because anyone who is in contact with the original criminals can buy or borrow the same demo. Then the price rises, the chat dies, or the remote tool installs more malware.

A real public decryptor, when one exists, shows up on a project such as No More Ransom or in a vendor advisory. It does not need a deposit in cryptocurrency and it does not need your Session ID. If the pitch is “we can decrypt, pay us first,” you are still in the market the ransomware created.

8. Payment closes nothing

Paying is not a guarantee. That sentence is not a slogan. It is the recorded experience of victims across ransomware families, and it is the position printed on the No More Ransom homepage: payment is not guaranteed, and you should not pay.

Even when a key arrives, it can fail on some file types, stop halfway, or demand a second payment. The same access that delivered KarryTech the first time can still be open. A payment teaches the operators that this victim pays. It does not patch the hole.

If someone later tells you that 100% of paying victims got everything back, ask for a public source that is not the person selling the key. You will not get one that you should trust.

What To Do If You See .karrytech Files

Do not email Kkarrytech@skiff.com. Do not add the Session ID from the note. Do not send the “one worthless file.” Do not ask for a price. The chat is the attacker’s storefront. If you already sent a message before you found this page, stop there. Do not send more files. Do not pay a deposit to “hold the price.” Save a copy of README.TXT and any reply as evidence.

Do not pay for the unique decryptor the note sells. Paying is not a guarantee that it works, that it works on every .karrytech file, or that the same crew will leave you alone. No free public decryptor is known for KarryTech.

STEP 1: Use Rkill to terminate suspicious programs.

In this first step, we will download and run Rkill to terminate suspicious programs that may be running on your computer.

RKill is a program that was developed at BleepingComputer.com that attempts to terminate known malware processes so that your normal security software can then run and clean your computer of infections. When RKill runs it will kill malware processes and then removes incorrect executable associations and fixes policies that stop us from using certain tools.

  1. Download Rkill.

    You can download RKill to your computer from the below link. When at the download page, click on the Download Now button labeled iExplore.exe. We are downloading a renamed version of Rkill (iExplore.exe) because some malware will not allow processes to run unless they have a certain filename.

  2. Run RKill.

    After downloading, double-click the iExplore.exe icon to kill malicious processes. In most cases, downloaded files are saved to the Downloads folder.
    The program may take some time to search for and end various malware programs.

    When it is finished, the black window will close automatically and a log file will open. Do not restart your computer. Proceed to the next step in this guide.

STEP 2: Use Malwarebytes to remove Ransomware and Unwanted Programs

  5. Start the Scan

    Click the blue Scan button. Malwarebytes will automatically update its virus database and start checking your computer for malware.

    The scan checks your entire system for browser hijackers and other malicious programs, so it can take several minutes. Feel free to do something else — just check back occasionally to see the progress.

    When the scan is done, you’ll see a list of everything Malwarebytes found — malware, adware, and potentially unwanted programs. Click the “Quarantine” button to remove all of them at once.

    When the scan completes, the Found and resolved detections screen appears. Any threats found were automatically cleaned and quarantined — there’s nothing extra you need to do. Click View detailed results if you want to see exactly what was removed.

    If ESET found nothing — congratulations, your computer has passed the final check and is malware-free.

STEP 6: Restore the files encrypted by ransomware

Unfortunately, in most cases, it’s not possible to recover the files encrypted by this ransomware virus because the private key which is needed to unlock the encrypted files is only available through the attackers. However, below we’ve listed three options you can use to try and recover your files.

Option 3: Try to restore your files with ShadowExplorer

This ransomware will attempt to delete all shadow copies when you first start any executable on your computer after becoming infected. Thankfully, the infection is not always able to remove the shadow copies, so you should continue to try restoring your files using this method.

    Double-click on the ShadowExplorer-x.x-setup file to start the installation process, then follow the on-screen promts to install this program.

The Bottom Line

KarryTech ransomware is a locker with a storefront. Files become name.{victim-GUID}.karrytech. README.TXT says the only way back is a unique decryptor. The note lists Kkarrytech@skiff.com and a Session ID, then offers one worthless file as a free test so the rest of the data still has a price.

Do not write to those contacts. Do not pay. Paying is not a guarantee. Microsoft and ESET already flag this family as Ransom:Win32/Beast.AYA!MTB and Win32/Filecoder.Beast.A, and no free public decryptor is known.

The path that still works is ordinary and official. Isolate the machine. Clean it with antivirus you chose on purpose. Keep an offline copy of the locked files. Restore from a backup that was never connected during the attack. Check No More Ransom later. File the incident with IC3. And treat every “we can decrypt KarryTech today” shop as a second chance for someone else to get paid.

Here are 10 practical safety rules to help you avoid malware, online shopping scams, crypto scams, and other online fraud. Each tip includes a quick “if you already got hit” action.

  1. Stop and verify before you click, log in, download, or pay.

    Most scams win by creating urgency. Verify using a trusted method: type the website address yourself, use the official app, or call a known number (not the one in the message).

    If you already clicked: close the page, do not enter passwords, and run a malware scan.

  2. Keep your operating system, browser, and apps updated.
