You open Documents the way you did yesterday. The first photo should still be 1.jpg. The vacation shot should still be vacation.jpg. The invoice should still be invoice-2026.pdf. The tax sheet should still be taxes.xlsx. Instead every familiar name has a second ending tacked on. 1.jpg is now 1.jpg.vile. A small text file named VILE_README.txt is sitting in the same folder, as if it has always belonged there. A pop-up may already be sitting on the desktop, repeating the same demand in a louder window.
That is the trap, not a glitch.
This page is for the hour those names appear. It is not a miracle key. It is a map of the trap, so the note does not become your incident plan.

Overview
Vile ransomware is a locker. The name is an ordinary English word used as a brand, the same way a lock on a folder is a brand. It is not a diagnosis of you, and it is not a slur aimed at a person in the folder. After it runs, it encrypts files and keeps the old name and the old type, then hangs .vile on the end. Then it drops VILE_README.txt and can throw a pop-up that repeats the same shop. The note shouts that your files have been encrypted. It claims a unique key lives on the operators’ servers. It prints a Victim ID. It asks for $1,500 in cryptocurrency. It prints one Bitcoin wallet and one Monero wallet. It warns that public data publication will happen after 14 days if you do not cooperate. It does not print an email. It does not print Session. It does not print Tox. It does not print an onion site.
If you are staring at a pile of .vile files, that text note, and a pop-up that will not stay closed, you are in a ransom incident, not a broken disk and not a Windows update. The folder is the evidence. The note is a checkout. The pop-up is a second copy of the same checkout. Stay with the folder, not with the script.
The first tell is the rename. In the documented sample, 1.jpg becomes 1.jpg.vile. 2.png becomes 2.png.vile. 3.exe becomes 3.exe.vile. You can still read what the file used to be. You cannot open it. Windows may call the type a VILE File and offer a useless “choose an app” box. An app cannot talk locked bytes back into a JPEG.
The second tell is the note. After the files are locked, the malware drops VILE_README.txt into the same folders. README sounds like documentation. VILE in the filename is branding. Put them together and the first English you can still read after the photos break is a sales flyer. The flyer is meant to be opened. It is not meant to be trusted.
The third tell is the pop-up. The locker does not stop at a text file. It can paint a window over the desktop that repeats YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED, prints a file count, a size, a Victim ID, a timestamp, and the same two wallet strings. A pop-up feels urgent because it sits on top of everything else. Urgency is the product. Closing the window does not unlock vacation.jpg.vile.
The body of that note is a costume. YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED. A misspelled “Oooops” and a line about the “vile collective” taking control of the computer. A claim that the data was encrypted with something unbreakable, that a key was sent to offshore servers, and that the files are permanently inaccessible without that key. A summary block that prints how many files were locked, a total size, a Victim ID, and a time. A “what happened” block that says military-grade encryption, backups destroyed, recovery tools disabled. A three-step recovery list that says contact them, provide the Victim ID, and wait. A payment block that names $1,500 USD, then the Bitcoin and Monero wallets. A deadline block that says public data publication will happen after 14 days. A CONTACT header with nothing under it. Then a warning list that tries to freeze you in place.
That is the whole pitch. A locked folder of .vile names. A VILE_README.txt file that talks like a recovery brief. A pop-up that repeats the wallets. A $1,500 ask. A 14-day leak clock. Two printed payment strings and no help desk. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. There is no reason to send coin to those wallets today because a text file and a pop-up told you to.
The .vile name is the first warning
Most lockers pick an extension so you notice the change in seconds. This one uses .vile. The extra cruelty is how readable the listing stays. You do not have to decode anything. You can still see 1.jpg inside 1.jpg.vile. You can still see the invoice year. You can still see the word taxes. The familiar words are still in the folder. The files are not familiar anymore.
Do not treat that readable name as a fix. Do not strip .vile off the end and expect Photos or Excel to open the file. Do not run a bulk “extension fixer” you found in an ad. The name is a label. The lock is in the content. Editing the label can make a later trusted tool have a harder time matching the file to what it was. Leave the locked copies as they are until you have a clean machine and a plan that does not start in a criminal wallet.
The extra ending also does advertising. Anyone who sees vacation.jpg.vile next to VILE_README.txt can pretend they already have your case. A later fake helper will quote the extension back to you as if that were expertise. The extension is public. It is sitting in the folder. VILE_README.txt is a sales floor, not a help file

Double-clicking it opens Notepad. That is why a panicked first click feels like opening the help page. It is not help. It is the demand, written so it looks official enough to follow. The filename is built to look like paperwork. README. A .txt ending Windows already trusts. Paperwork is easier to obey than a threat.
Keep the file on disk. Then close it. Do not treat it as a set of steps you should follow. Do not tidy the filename. Do not shorten it to “the readme” when you write the incident down. Copy VILE_README.txt the way you would copy a serial off a stolen laptop. That string is how a responder matches this locker. It is not a coupon you redeem by sending Bitcoin or Monero.
The pop-up is a second storefront

It names the disaster in capital letters so the rest of the flyer feels like the only adult in the room. You are supposed to stop thinking and start obeying.
The shout is also a brand. Later search ads will quote it. Later “helpers” will paste it so they sound close to your folder. Anyone can copy a headline. Copying YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED does not mean they can reverse .vile. It means they read the same note you did, or they read a screenshot of it.
If the shout is sitting in more than one folder, that is normal for this family. Lockers drop the same text in many places so you cannot miss it. Finding five copies is not five incidents. It is one incident with a loud flyer. Keep one clean copy as evidence. You do not need to open every copy. You do not need to compare them by sending coin “just to see if this copy is real.”
Military-grade and a key on their server are costume
The note claims the files were encrypted with military-grade encryption and that the key was sent to a secure server. Those strings are meant to shut down argument. They sound like a standard. They sound like a lab. They sound like something you cannot argue with at the kitchen table. They are still attacker copy. Naming a scare word is not the same as handing you a proof. What the note is actually selling is helplessness. If the lock is “unbreakable” without their key, then their wallets are the only aisle. $1,500 does not buy a contract. It does not buy a clean machine. It does not buy a guarantee that vacation.jpg.vile will open. Paying does not ensure the files come back, does not ensure the systems are clean, and does not ensure anyone on the other side keeps a promise.
The note already did the quoting. Your job, in their script, is checkout. Do not complete it. Do not “test” a smaller amount to see if they answer. A test payment is still a payment. It still tells them this victim pays. There is no second victim price printed in the documented note. Do not invent one.
The Bitcoin and Monero lines are checkout

Do not paste them into a second site that offers to “check if the wallet is real.” A string of letters that looks like a wallet is still not a receipt, and it is not a reason to open an exchange they pointed at.
If your copy of VILE_README.txt shows those exact strings, copy them only into an incident record. They are identifiers for a responder. They are not payment instructions you should carry out. Do not invent a third wallet because a comment said the published sample was incomplete. The documented note has these two. This page will not add another.
The 14-day leak clock is a fuse
The deadline block is short. Public data publication will happen after 14 days. That sentence is meant to make $1,500 feel cheap next to embarrassment. Then a CONTACT header sits over nothing. Then the warnings start. That empty block is not a kindness. It is the shop telling you the wallets are the contact.
There is no email in the documented note. There is no Session handle. There is no Tox ID. There is no onion chat. Do not invent those channels because other ransomware families use them. A later message that adds a Session ID, a Tox ID, or an .onion “panel” is rewriting the flyer. The original shop already named the price. It already named the wallets. It did not need a chat room.
Silence is not rude here. Silence is how you stay out of their queue. A relative, an insurer, or an incident lead can still talk on a phone. The people who locked the files do not get a seat in that call.
The warning list is how they keep the machine in place
The note tells you not to decrypt files yourself, not to rename or modify encrypted files, not to use third-party recovery tools, not to run System Restore, and not to reinstall Windows. It says any attempt to modify, recover, or remove the application will permanently destroy the decryption key. Some of those lines are ordinary locker theater. Some of them are useful for the wrong reason. That is because those moves can damage evidence, not because a criminal note asked you to be polite. You should isolate the machine. You should unplug extra disks. You should take the box off the network. Those steps are for you, not for them. A warning that says “do not power down” is how they keep a live locker sitting on a live disk. Do not obey that part.
How The Attack Works
The shop is simple once you stop reading it as a rescue. Lock the files. Brand the names with .vile. Drop a readme that shouts ENCRYPT and names a collective. Paint a pop-up that repeats the wallets. Print a Victim ID. Print $1,500. Print one Bitcoin string and one Monero string. Print a 14-day leak clock. Leave the CONTACT header empty. Then wait for someone else to sell a chat handle the note never printed.
1. The lock keeps the old name so you recognize the loss
Vile encrypts the files it wants as leverage, then appends .vile. That is why 1.jpg is still readable as 1.jpg.vile. The operators want you to inventory the damage in seconds. They want you to see the vacation photo, the invoice, the tax sheet, and the family video in one glance. A coded filename can confuse you. A readable filename makes you feel the theft.
If only one folder looks wrong, do not assume the rest of the disk is safe. Ransomware walks trees. It hits Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Downloads, and any drive letter it can reach, including a USB stick you forgot was plugged in. Unplug extra disks. Do not plug in a copy “just to check.” Checking is how the extra copy gets the same .vile ending.
Double-clicking a renamed file does not bring the photo back. The thumbnail may already look broken. Excel may ask for a workbook that is still sitting in the same folder, only the bytes inside are no longer a workbook. That broken open is the first proof. The second proof is the extra ending. 2. VILE_README.txt turns a break-in into a ticket

Notice what the note does not give you. It does not give you a company, a refund policy, or a way to prove the other side will ever send a key. It does not give you an email. It does not give you Session or Tox. It does not give you a test decrypt. It gives you a tone that says this is already decided. That tone is the product. Read the file as a sales flyer. Then close it. Keep it on disk.
3. The pop-up repeats the shop on the glass
A readme can be closed. A pop-up sits on the glass until you deal with it. The documented pop-up repeats YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED, prints a file count, a size, a Victim ID, a timestamp, and then the same Bitcoin and Monero strings. That repetition is not extra proof. It is extra pressure. Two windows saying the same thing still add up to one locker.
Do not hunt for a hidden chat button inside the pop-up. The documented window does not add Session, Tox, or an onion panel. If a later pop-up on your machine does add those, treat the extra channel as a rewrite, not as a missing page from the original flyer. The wallets already printed are the product. Keep one screenshot if you need it. Then isolate the box.

The shout also travels. Search ads will recycle it. Commenters will paste it. A later “Vile helper” will recite it so they sound close to your Documents folder. Reciting a headline is not a decryptor. It is proof they can read. Keep the line as an identifier when you describe the incident. Do not treat it as a diagnosis you have to obey.

Scare word plus private control sounds like math you cannot beat at the kitchen table. It is still a sales paragraph. It is not a lab report. You do not need to argue cryptography with a text file. You need to stop treating the file as a technician. Leave 1.jpg.vile named as it is. Leave VILE_README.txt where it is. The algorithm printed in that note is part of the pitch. It is not a recovery procedure.
6. Backups destroyed and recovery tools disabled is a scare paragraph

The only “information below” is $1,500 and two wallets. The ID is how they make a transfer feel like a ticket. Tickets make people patient. Patient people send coin and then sit in the 14-day clock.
Do not send the Victim ID to a stranger who offers to “open a case.” Do not type it into an exchange memo. Do not print it on a receipt you later mail to someone who quoted VILE_README.txt. Keep it with the note. That is the whole useful life of the string.
8. $1,500 is checkout
Plenty of lockers hide the figure until you write. This one prints $1,500 USD up front. That is not kindness. A printed price removes the last excuse for delay. You do not have to “ask what it costs.” You already know. The remaining step is the transfer. The note has already done the quoting.
Low ransoms also travel well. They look like a checkout because checkout uses wallets. Criminal shops use wallets too, because a transfer is where a locked photo becomes a payment they can drop whenever they like.
Do not send BTC to that address. Do not send XMR to that address. Do not create an exchange account “just to see.” Do not send a screenshot of Explorer to prove the lock. They already chose the extension. They already chose the note name. A photo of VILE_README.txt sitting next to 1.jpg.vile does not make you a verified customer. It makes you a person still following the flyer.
If someone later says they will “talk to Vile for you” if you first send a small amount to one of those wallets, that is a broker pitch. Brokers need you in the same funnel. You do not owe them a seat. Report the incident through official desks. Let counsel decide if contact is ever required for a specific legal reason. That decision is not yours to make from the Documents folder at midnight.
10. Fourteen days is the leak fuse
The sample prints a 14-day public data publication threat. That is the fuse. Other families use 48 hours or 7 days. This one uses 14. A longer clock can feel kinder. It is not kinder. It is more time for you to sit with the $1,500 number until it starts to look small. It is more time for a relative to find a “helper” who already knows the wallets.
Do not add missing pieces yourself. Do not send a small file because a later message offered a test decrypt the original note never printed. 11. Empty contact means they want coin, not a conversation
The CONTACT header is empty in the documented note. That is not an unfinished draft. That is the shop refusing to give you a room you can argue in. No email means no ticket. No Session means no chat. No Tox means no second chat. No onion means no fake support portal. The wallets are the only printed path.
A later stranger who adds those missing channels is not completing the note for you. They are standing up a second shop in the same doorway. Do not join a Session they invented. Do not install Tox because a comment said “that is how Vile talks.” The documented flyer did not print those handles. This page will not invent them.
12. The warning list tries to freeze the machine
The last block is a list of things you must not do, written as if a power button could murder the key. That is control. A live infected machine on a live network is still useful to them. A machine you isolate, image, and clean is useful to you. Do not reinstall Windows over the only copy of the locked files if you still hope a trusted tool appears later. A demo that “unlocks one file” is not proof they can unlock the vacation photo. Anyone can open one junk file they control. Anyone can send you a wallet string that makes an exchange window appear. If a later message skips the original wallets and asks for coin over ordinary mail, that is still the same market, or a copycat standing in the same doorway. Do not answer. Do not help them add Session or Tox the public note left out on purpose.
A real public decryptor, when one exists, shows up on an official project page that already existed before your incident. It does not need a $1,500 send. It does not need those wallets. If the pitch is “we can decrypt, pay us first,” you are still in the market the ransomware created. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. 14. Payment and those wallets close nothing
Paying a stranger for a private key is not a guarantee. The people who send the note can take the $1,500 and disappear. They can send a string that only makes a decryptor show an error. They can come back later and lock the same machine again. A Bitcoin transfer and a Monero transfer make that outcome easier, not harder. You cannot leave a review on a criminal wallet.

If this is a company machine, tell counsel and your incident lead. If this is a home PC, tell the people whose files lived on it. Change passwords from a clean device. Watch bank and email alerts. Opening those wallets again is not useful work. It is the checkout.
What To Do If Your Files End in .vile
