10 Rules to Avoid Online Scams

Here are 10 practical safety rules to help you avoid malware, online shopping scams, crypto scams, and other online fraud. Each tip includes a quick “if you already got hit” action.

  1. Stop and verify before you click, log in, download, or pay.

    warning sign

Most scams win by creating urgency. Verify using a trusted method: type the website address yourself, use the official app, or call a known number (not the one in the message).

If you already clicked: close the page, do not enter passwords, and run a malware scan.

  2. Keep your operating system, browser, and apps updated.

    updates guide

Updates patch security holes used by malware and malicious ads. Turn on automatic updates where possible.

If you saw a scary “update now” pop-up: close it and update only through your device settings or the official app store.

  3. Use layered protection: antivirus plus an ad blocker.

    shield guide

Antivirus helps block malware. An ad blocker reduces scam redirects, phishing pages, and malvertising.

If your browser is acting weird: remove unknown extensions, reset the browser, then run a full scan.

  4. Install apps, software, and extensions only from official sources.

    install guide

Avoid cracked software, “keygens,” and random downloads. During installs, choose Custom/Advanced and decline bundled offers you do not recognize.

If you already installed something suspicious: uninstall it, restart, and scan again.

  5. Treat links and attachments as untrusted by default.

    cursor sign

Phishing often impersonates delivery services, banks, and popular brands. If it is unexpected, do not open attachments or log in through the message.

If you entered credentials: change the password immediately and enable 2FA.

  6. Shop safely: research the store, then pay with protection.

    trojan horse

Be cautious with brand-new stores, “closing sale” stories, and prices that make no sense. Prefer credit cards or PayPal for dispute options. Avoid wire transfers, gift cards, and crypto payments.

If you already paid: contact your card issuer or PayPal quickly to dispute the transaction.

  7. Crypto rule: never pay a “fee” to withdraw or recover money.

    lock sign

Common patterns include fake profits, then “tax,” “gas,” or “verification” fees. Another is a “recovery agent” who demands upfront crypto.

If you already sent crypto: stop paying, save evidence (wallet addresses, TXIDs, chats), and report the scam to the platform used.

  8. Secure your accounts with unique passwords and 2FA (start with email).

    lock sign

Use a password manager and unique passwords for every account. Enable 2FA using an authenticator app when possible.

If you suspect an account takeover: change passwords, sign out of all devices, and review recent logins and recovery settings.

  9. Back up important files and keep one backup offline.

    backup sign

Backups protect you from ransomware and device failure. Keep at least one backup on an external drive that is not always connected.

If you suspect infection: do not connect backup drives until the system is clean.

  10. If you think you are a victim: stop losses, document evidence, and escalate fast.

    warning sign

Move quickly. Speed matters for disputes, account recovery, and limiting damage.

    • Stop payments and contact: do not send more money or respond to the scammer.
    • Call your bank or card issuer: block transactions, replace the card if needed, and start a dispute or chargeback.
    • Secure your email first: change the email password, enable 2FA, and remove unfamiliar recovery options.
    • Secure other accounts: change passwords, enable 2FA, and log out of all sessions.
    • Scan your device: remove suspicious apps or extensions, then run a full malware scan.
    • Save evidence: screenshots, emails, order pages, tracking pages, wallet addresses, TXIDs, and chat logs.
    • Report it: to the payment provider, marketplace, social platform, exchange, or wallet service involved.

These rules are intentionally simple. Most online losses happen when decisions are rushed. Slow down, verify independently, and use payment methods and account controls that give you recourse.

  1. My computer popped up with the SMART file and I freaked out….all my pictures of my daughter were gone as were all my work files. I calmly searched on my phone for something to help, and found this. It took quite a while to fix, but I’m so glad I came across this. Thanks for saving my computer and my pocket book from techs that would have taken advantage of me.

  2. I was just infected with this today. Operating Windows 7. Finally got to the internet in Safe Mode and have run every link to RKill that you’ve posted and each log states that no processes were terminated. Is this a problem? I am now running ESET as you instructed someone earlier.

    • No,if rKill didn’t find any malicous process running than,that’s great!;D
Let the ESET scan complete and get back to us!

  3. you guys are the greatest…clearly written…well supported…and most of all it works!
thanks for taking the time to do this.

  4. So far so good – you are a genious. I can’t get roguekiller.exe to download, no matter what I try – any suggestions on that piece?

      http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/uSeRiNiT.exe

2.Next,please perform a scan with RogueKiller and ESET Online Scanner.
Run a scan with ESET Online Scanner

      1. Download ESET Online Scanner utility.
ESET Online Scanner Download Link (This link will automatically download ESET Online Scanner on your computer.)
      2. Double click on the Eset installer program (esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe).

      9. Push Export to Text file  and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.Note – when ESET doesn’t find any threats, no report will be created.
      10. Push the back button.
      11. Push Finish
  5. I read the instruction and pre-downloaded all the recommended applications. Then with the applications on a flash drive I went through the process step by step. Once the procedure was complete I realized a complete restoration.

Thanks so much and I recommend supporting all the developers who help facilitate this type of support against rogue marauders.

    • Agreed, talk about a pain in the a$$. I was trying to go to a website to look up a great quote on teamwork (for a meeting) and blamo I got nuked this morning at around 7AM. I’m just now back to productive thanks 100% to this article. +1 for the good guys. Thanks so much Stelian…

  6. I can’t get any response when I reboot and press F8. My only options are F2 and F11 which have nothing to do with Safe Mode. Any ideas on how I can get around this? I’ve tried pressing F8, depressing F8, CTRL F8 but nothing happens.

    Thanks.

  7. You advised backing up important files before attempting to get rid of the SMART malware. I tried accessing my photos in Safe Mode, but was not able to do so. I am also concerned about saving files that may be infected. How can I backup the files I need to?

    • Run Rkill, than try to run Unhide.exe.. This should make your files visible again…….Next you can save your personal files.Do not save .EXE files.
For what is worth I think you can also perform the MBAM scan before saving any files as this program has a very low amount of false positive.

      • Rkill would not run; neither would MBAM. I get a messaage: Internal error: “failed to expand shell folder constant “userappdata.” I have no idea what that means. Has this menace filled my hard drive, and would it help to use a flash drive for extra capacity?

      • The only “solution” that has come anywhere near helping anyone is the following for the related Error 1606. Follow these steps to change your registry settings: (Of course, you should back up the registry before making any changes)

Click on “Start-Run, type “regedit” (without the quotes)
        Navigate to this registry path:
        HKEY_CURRENT_USER –> Software –> Microsoft –> Windows –> Current Version –> Explorer –> User Shell Folders
Clear the key: Recent (right mouse click on the key/folder, choose “Delete”)
Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer.

If this fails to correct your problem, the question is – how long has this been a problem?  If it has just recently surfaced, you might try a System Restore to a point in time before the problem started. Here are the steps:

        The System Restore tool

If the issue that you are experiencing started occurring recently, you can use the System Restore tool. By using this tool, you can restore the computer to an earlier point in time. Using the System Restore tool may not necessarily help you determine the issue. When you use System Restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs and updates that you installed are removed.

To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:

        1.     Click Start, type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click System Restore in thePrograms list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

        2.     In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.

        3.     In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click Next.

        4.     Click Finish.

The computer restarts, and the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.
Next, try to run RKILL and then Malwarebytes!Let us know how is everything going!

      • I tried the shell thing – it did not work. I restored back to the week before the trouble started and tried following your instructions again. RKill cannot run. Mbam installation wizard not allowed to finish instillation, so cannot run. I tried Chameleon, but that did not work. I did run Hitman Pro three times – it did detect a Trojan virus and other issues the first time, now no threats detected. Unhide.exe will not run – message: “There was a problem retrieving a necessary environment variable. Unhide has terminated!” Trend Micro will not run, neither will McAfee. (I don’t think I’m supposed to have two security systems, but I have no idea where McAfee came from). I’m still operating in Safe Mode. Any further suggestions?

  8. Hi
My desktop has been infected with the subject virus. I am trying to use the
Malwarebytes (MWB) process to remove it and restore hidden files. I have a Dell XPS running W 7. I have followed the instructions to input the MWB
provided bogus activation code, and then shut the computer down. Problem: When I restart and hold down the F8 key, I get a very quickly flashed screen with a couple of options in the lower left corner about modes (not there long enough to read) and then it goes to “resume windows”. If I go ahead and let windows open, the S.M.A.R.T. stuff is still there. At that point, I shut the system down again for fear of getting more damage/infection. I have tried it several times, with varying lengths of time holding down F8, etc., but keep getting the same results. Can you help me get to SAFE MODE?
    Thanks.
    TomB

    • I just tried restart with FORCEBREACH and it worked. Hopefully I will not have to come back, again

        3. Check Yes, I accept the Terms of Use

        6. Check Scan archives
        7. Push the Start button.

  11. My system configuration utility does not work now. When I type “msconfig” I get the following message “Windows cannot find ‘msconfig’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file….”

  12. Your directions worked flawlessly. The rogue is removed and my computer is working as was, except that now everytime I boot up, the Windows Zero Configuration does not start automatically. I went into the settings from services.msc and set to automatic, but once I restart it the utility does not start. If I start it manually from the Properties it works fine. Any suggestions?

    • Have you looked for errors in your Event Logs? That might tell you why it’s not starting.
Also, many manufacturers include their own utility software for managing connections. That will disable WZC. Do you have another program, somewhere on your start menu, that will let you manage your wireless?
You can also run msconfig and look under services – is it enabled in there?

  13. I got infected, and i can’t get the internet work. Any idea of getting around to the internet?

    • Did you check for a proxy server?
This infection should not block your internet connection… did you check the cables/wifi?
Do you have any previously created restore points?

  14. Yes, I followed the instructions using Malwarebytes, Hitman, and Tweaking. But I reached a stumbling block with RogueKiller. And now it won’t download the Emisoft file. Is it safe at this point to restart my laptop, or will it re-initiated the S.M.A.R.T. infection? I’m running McAfee. Could that be blocking these downloads?

    • Yes, restart you computer…… :)

  15. The instructions to removed the S.M.A.R.T. virus have worked for me up until the downloading of RogueKiller. I cannot get it to download from your link. I have also tried downloading it from other sites, but Internet Explorer (9) keeps locking up. Any suggestions?

  16. Hi,
Can you tell me why EVERYTIME I use this page to remove “SMART repairs”, I have to pay for HitmanPRO, why am I the only person in the world who has to pay for the software to clean the computer with a 12mth license.
I have used your very helpful pages, this and the other page ‘Remove Data Recovery, S.M.A.R.T HDD,Repair and Check virus’ BUT this point: 7. Click Activate free license to start the free 30 days trial ….. there is NO Activate free license button available and I am forced to pay for HotmanPro to clean.
Altho it is not expensive, your instructions need to make users aware of the possible payment.
HitmanPro software sales tell me there was never an option to “Activate free license”, so where did this option come from.
