Microsoft is getting ready to discontinue its ‘classic’ Teams desktop app later this year. The company announced yesterday that it will drop support for Classic Teams on July 1, 2024, which is when users will start seeing messages that the app is no longer supported.

Starting on October 23, 2024, users on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and macOS Sierra (10.12) will be blocked from accessing Classic Teams. The app will keep working for Windows 10, macOS versions below Big Sur(11), and LTSC users until July 1, 2025, however.

Last fall, Microsoft started rolling out a new Teams desktop client via an in-app toggle. The new Teams is faster and more power-efficient as it replaced Electron with the React framework and Edge WebView 2. While the new Teams app didn’t have feature parity with the classic app at launch, it also added new features such as multi-tenant organization capabilities and support for Copilot for Microsoft 365. This new Teams client is also available on the web.

While this is unrelated to this announcement, you may be aware that Microsoft started testing another “new” Teams client with Windows Insiders last month. This is a unified Teams client that lets users seamlessly switch between personal and work accounts. This has been a popular request from users who didn’t like having a separate Teams app for personal use on Windows 11. This unified Teams client is expected to ship with Windows 11 version 24H2 later this year.

Thanks for sharing this news. It looks like Microsoft is pushing users towards the newer, more efficient Teams desktop client. It's significant to note the discontinuation dates for different operating systems and the new features being added. Users might need to plan ahead to avoid disruption.
