2). After seeing your post about Panda I just took it for a quick dance and found the results to be sub-optimal. Although fine against older common malware it did not fair so well against a few worms and LoLbin's. Also a MyLittlePony encryptor (which my cat freshly coded) trashed personal files.

just like panda , comodo leaves a lot of unwanted stuff behind after uninstall , even after usage of their official uninstaller tool offered on their forum. like legacy regkeys which CANNOT be removed : if you do a scan afterwards with Registar registry manager , you will be shocked with the amount of stuff left behind still. , installation folders ( often hidden ) but if you need too choose , get comodo firewall with meghans settings....
Yes that has happened to me and I had to run FRST (Farbar recovery tool) to clean it all up.
