If you are running Android Marshmallow or higher, apps can request permission that you can Allow or Deny. If you are running a Screen Dimmer, it will need to disabled / paused before setting permissions. Be aware some reputable Anti-Theft apps may require access to your Camera.

For real-time protection, Zemana for Android requires a license. You can find one from an online Giveaway.

Please elaborate further.. which apps are negatively rated? have you looked for higher rated apps?

The problem is that many apps (or all of them? I'm not sure) will not run if one of their required permissions are denied.
If only there was 3rd party permission manager that work without root. Some permission are indeed necessary but some apps lie. When you deny certain permission, some apps will say, "Allow contacts, location, sms bla bla bla". When you deny the same permission with xprivacy, the apps work fine.

Great! for root users
Forgot one thing. You need Xposed which is not available for Nougat. But app ops available for root only users. Not as good as Xprivacy but better than Android's native permission manager. These apps provide fake permission to apps(like blank contacts and sms) so that these apps can't lie.
