Live Folders, a new feature in Update 1

As previously announced Microsoft’s newest Windows Phone version is now available for users in the Developer Preview program. Those of you registered can now download Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 to your devices.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, or GDR1 as it’s also known, is the first update for Windows Phone devices since the launch of the new OS earlier this year.

The software upgrade brings some new features including, Live Folders, major improvements to IE11 and Cortana for new countries, specifically the UK and China. You can check out the announcement article for more info on what new features come with this update.

Later this year it will become available for all users, but right now you have to be in the Developer Preview if you want to try it out. However, signing up is free and easy and you’ll always be running the newest version of Windows Phone.

Update: Folks looks like there are two updates going out. The first one, to version 12400.899, is not GDR1/Update 1 but rather a smaller update that brings all Dev Preview devices up to date. This update was previously stopped due to issues related to BitLocker but now it seems it's going out to everybody, The second one, to version 14147.180 IS Update 1 and brings the new features mentioned above. If you only got the first one don't despair yet, the update is still spreading through servers.
