I notice that when I launch the "Update Now" from the tray icon I cannot see the usual updating tab. Was it removed? I do not have an inkling as to how the update is going...when i launch it in the gui all I see is a "little running thing" below the update area.

Yeah they did get rid of the usual pop up windows showing exact details but it will give you status of the update if you watch where you see "Initializing". Updates are so fast you'll probably almost never see it unless you had your computer off for a few hours. The bigger the update, the longer it will show.

My Eset Licence is about to expire for my 5 PCs and i´m playing with the thought to give Emsisoft a chance. But as i see it would cost around 80 bucks per year more. Is it really worth that?

You can try talking to emsisoft support about your situation via email. If I recall correctly they may give discounts for certain cases.
