Some of the main new highlights of this release are:
  • Four new themes: Light, Gray, Dark, and System
  • Basic HiDPI support
  • GEGL is the new image processing engine providing high bit depth processing, multi-threaded and hardware accelerated pixel processing
  • Warp transform, the Unified transform and the Handle transform tools are some of the new tools
  • Many existing tools have been improved as well
  • Digital painting has been improved with canvas rotation and flipping, symmetry painting, MyPaint brush support
  • Support for OpenEXR, RGBE, WebP, HGT image formats have been added
  • Metadata viewing and editing for Exif, XMP, IPTC, and DICOM
  • Color management revamped
  • Linear color space workflow
  • Digital photography improvements with Exposure, Shadows-Highlights, High-pass, Wavelet Decompose, Panorama Projection tools
  • Usability improvements

Its only desktop rival is Photoshop Elements, a stripped down and simplified Photoshop catered to home users and amateur photographers.

GIMP 2.10.36 Released (2023-11-07)
This stable release of GIMP comes with a few security fixes, so we advise you to update even if you feel like your current version works fine for you. Apart from the many bug fixes and security updates, it also provides new support for palette formats and a new generated gradient.
This news lists the most notable and visible changes. In particular, we do not list here bug fixes or smaller improvements. To get a more complete list of changes, you should refer to the NEWS file or look at the commit history.
