There's nothing to be ashamed of. Microsoft Security Essentials should be good for basic computer use... but not great. You could be infected (well even if you use great antivirus you could still get infected)
If you want a good FREE and LIGHT Antivirus, try these two, tested to be great:

AVAST Free
http://avast.com

360 Internet Security (Do not choose 360 Total Security, still heavy and buggy)
http://360safe.com

And, you could also download http://K9WebProtection.com a Free Web Filter and Parental Control, to stay away from malicious links that contains malwares/viruses. also from porn.
