I've always tried to set up virutalbox but always failed to do so... Maybe i can follow this guide.

i use Vurtualbox and love it you just need a big hard drive and enough memory

it's a great teacher

it's great for learning new things like you can add a second hard drive/cd/dvd drive or more if you like
learn to install not just a Linux OS but Mac,Oracle Solaris,BSD,Windows
learn to dual boot
learn to boot from a iso (same as a boot cd/dvd)
learn to format/partition a hard drive from a boot cd/iso or software
learn to use and test software like imaging tools,security software with out fear of breaking something on your main pc
and much much more

there is also other Linux versions to try that are very small and use less memory to run like
Puppy Linux
Damn Small Linux
and more
