Hmm... so refreshing does not work? It seems its like a jpeg/PNG or related extension format issue.

When did it happened?

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm You may try it to fix jpg association extension file.

or this one http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/8486-default-file-associations-restore-windows-8-a.html

Did you try the Windows 8 default association file issue? I think its advisable to use that.

Just ignore the Windows XP file association.

So it means your exe files are having problem on displaying the icons? Or those pictures only poses an issue?

No luck for setting default programs? If any solution didn't show a success then you may try a resort options which is refresh/ related for fixing the OS itself.

Guys, it's not an issue with the file association because he can open the images, the only issue that he has is with Image Thumbnails that are not showing up

Here is how to fix this:

Method #1
Start > in the search box, type Folder Options > press Enter key > click View tab > un-check "Always show icons, never thumbnails" > OK

Method #2

Start button > Control Panel > Classic view > Systems >In the left column, select Advanced System Settings > Performance tab, click Settings > Visual Effects tab, click "Always show thumbnails instead of icons " > OK
