UPDATE: We just pushed an update, which now brings the build number to 79.0.309.7.

Hello insiders, today we’re releasing build 79.0.309.5 to the Dev Channel! You may notice that this is only one build away from last week’s Dev, and that’s because this is our candidate for our next Beta release, so we want to make sure it’s extra polished before we release it there. However, that also means it’s a pretty light week this week in terms of notable changes.

We do have one known issue right now, where Edge sometimes launches to a blank white window. There are two possible causes. If you launch another window and it’s fine, you shouldn’t ever see the issue again. However, if subsequent windows are also blank, you’ll have to disable Application Guard in order to get Edge back into a working state. We plan on releasing another update later this week in order to get us in sync with Chromium’s Beta, so the fix for that cause should be in the updated build.

  • Fixed a crash when logging into the browser.
  • Fixed an issue where typing in the address bar sometimes causes the browser to crash.
  • Fixed an issue where the browser sometimes crashes after completing the first run experience.
  • Fixed a hang during the first run experience.
  • Fixed an issue where the theme sometimes changes unexpectedly after the first run experience.
  • Fixed some issues with Application Guard windows not successfully opening.
  • Disabled hardware acceleration in Application Guard windows to prevent them from hanging on certain machines.
  • Fixed an issue where certain webpages don’t open in Application Guard windows even though they should.
  • Fixed an issue where files that should be downloaded in Application Guard windows aren’t.
  • Fixed an issue where an extra “Work” browser profile gets automatically created for some users (note that this may not remove the extra profile; a future fix will ensure that).
  • Fixed an issue where the Mac Touch Bar sometimes doesn’t show the proper content.
  • Fixed an issue where the Settings page constantly shows “looking for updates” without ever completing.
  • Fixed an issue where certain settings are changeable even when they’re disabled.
  • Fixed an issue where certain settings that are supposed to be enabled by default are disabled after performing a settings reset.
  • Fixed an issue where the Delete button does not appear next to downloads that have been blocked by SmartScreen.
  • Fixed an issue where the warning not to close the browser because a download is in progress appears even though the user isn’t downloading anything.
  • Fixed an issue where websites that are blocked by SmartScreen aren’t removed from history.
  • Improved scrolling behavior on the new tab page.
  • Fixed some issues with the PDF toolbar’s hiding behavior.
  • Fixed an issue where switching between IE mode tabs and non-IE mode tabs leaves webpages at the wrong zoom level on certain devices.
  • Fixed an issue where no sites open in IE mode tabs when a certain combination of IE mode policies is applied.
  • Fixed an issue where tooltips in Collections all say “collection content” instead of the actual content.
  • Fixed an issue where certain print preview content is hard to read in dark theme.

We’ll be back to normal next week, and it’s also Ignite! Will we see any of you there? In the meantime though, thanks to everybody who’s been using Edge and telling us everything you do and don’t like about it.

I noticed something very sneaky about the recent update. It changes some Privacy and Services settings, e.g. "send browsing info > M$" that you may have set.

I found this to be true in Dev and Stable versions.

No changes in my stable version, but thanks for the warning (y)
They are now managed by the windows settings in privacy and mine are "blocked" by O&O ShutUp 10.

yesterday - last edited an hour ago

UPDATE 2: 320.4 has been released with the fix for the Task Bar icons issue. The Netflix issue is expected to be fixed in another update tomorrow.

UPDATE: We're expecting to release a small update in the next day or two to fix an issue where users with multiple browser profiles still see the old Edge icon on the Task Bar, and an issue where Netflix doesn't work.

Hello insiders, we’ve got some big news today! With today’s Dev Channel update to 80.0.320.3, we’re officially releasing a new icon for all Microsoft Edge channels. You can read more about it here: Getting your sites ready for the new Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Edge Blog. That page also contains a date, January 15th, which is when we expect to release our first Stable Channel build, at which point Edge will be generally available to download on Windows and Mac.

Some of you may have noticed a cryptic update last week. That was part of a series of puzzles that hundreds of insiders participated in over the past weekend. The puzzles culminated in a surfing game hidden inside Edge, and the reward for beating it was the chance to see the new icon before anybody else. You can click here for instructions on how to unlock the game, or just search Twitter for #FindWhatsNext to try solving some of the puzzles!

With all of these exciting announcements, we do have a few known issues that are still in this week’s build:

  • Extensions that are installed from the Chrome Web Store aren’t getting automatically updated. We expect the fix for this issue to be in today’s Canary and next week’s Dev.
  • The fix for the issue where Edge’s first launch leads to a blank white window didn’t make it into this week’s build. We now expect it next week.
  • There are some issues where users with multiple audio output devices sometimes don’t get any sound from Edge. In one case, Edge becomes muted in the Windows Volume Mixer and unmuting it fixes it. In another, restarting the browser fixes it.
  • At certain zoom levels, there is a noticeable line between the browser UI and the web contents.
  • Some users were still seeing screenshots that are automatically taken by the feedback tool turn out garbled or all black. Another potential fix for this is expected next week.
  • Jumplist entries are not consistent between the Start Menu and the Task Bar for some users. We believe this is due to the shortcut on the Start Menu not getting migrated properly after an Edge update and are working on a fix.
  • Sometimes the browser will appear to not respond to any user input (clicking or scrolling in webpages doesn’t do anything, hovering over UI doesn’t make it change), but clicking on certain buttons still works (like the … menu). The cause of this is due to an error in the GPU process, and opening the browser task manager (right-click near the window minimize/maximize/close buttons or hit shift+esc on the keyboard) will open a window that will allow you to end the GPU process, which will fix the issue.

And now, for all of the new things that are worth noting:

Added features:

  • Added the ability for websites installed as apps to be restored when a browser session is restored after update, crash, etc.
  • Added support for an upstream Chromium policy that allows a user to remember a decision to open a link using another application (for example, to join a meeting in Microsoft Teams).
  • Added support for periods in single-word intranet URLs.
  • Added the ability to delete Collections items using the Delete keyboard key.
  • Added a dialog for when browser sign-in is disabled by policy.

Improved reliability:

  • Fixed an issue where Edge crashes shortly after launch for some users if sync is enabled.
  • Fixed an issue where right-clicking the back button crashes the browser.
  • Fixed an issue where editing text in the address bar sometimes causes a browser crash.
  • Fixed a browser crash when updating extensions.
  • Fixed an issue where using the built-in abusive ad blocker sometimes causes the browser to crash upon launch.
  • Fixed an issue where certain websites like YouTube rendered huge, making them unusable.
  • Fixed an issue where print preview does not load.
  • Fixed an issue where PDFs sometimes don’t load properly.
  • Fixed an issue where right-clicking on a PDF sometimes causes the tab to crash.
  • Fixed an issue where navigating to certain webpages with videos causes the tab to crash.
  • Fixed an issue where Application Guard windows hang upon startup.
  • Fixed an issue where all Edge windows open completely white with no UI, but disabling Application Guard mitigates the issue.
  • Fixed an issue where certain DRM-protected videos don’t play.
  • Fixed an issue where certain protected videos like from Netflix don’t work.
  • Fixed an issue where tooltips don’t appear.
  • Improved the reliability of history and favorites items appearing in the address bar suggestions dropdown.
  • Improved the reliability of installation.

Changed behavior:

  • Fixed an issue where Single Sign-On stops working and users unexpectedly see a username/password prompt to log into websites.
  • Fixed an issue where two Edge shortcuts are sometimes on the Taskbar after an update.
  • Fixed an issue where Work profiles that were erroneously added to the browser were unremovable.
  • Fixed an issue where Application Guard windows open when the browser is launched even though they shouldn’t.
  • Fixed an issue where enabling Application Guard sometimes causes downloads to be blocked in non-Application Guard windows.
  • Fixed an issue where the first run experience sometimes runs every time the browser is opened.
  • Fixed an issue where the profile Settings page has no way for the user to fix an issue with their browser sign-in when one is needed.
  • Fixed an issue where sync can’t be turned off while it’s in the “setting up” state.
  • Fixed an issue where certain UI buttons show $1 instead of their keyboard shortcut in their tooltip.
  • Fixed an issue where the favorites bar is shown when in full screen mode.
  • Fixed an issue where Collections content sometimes gets truncated.
  • Fixed an issue where Spellcheck squigglies appear in Collections items even though they aren’t actionable.
  • Fixed an issue where an incorrect image is used when adding certain webpages to a Collection.
  • Fixed an issue where clicking the button to open the text styles flyout in a Collection sometimes doesn’t work.
  • Fixed an issue where text styling in a Collection isn’t applied properly when using the keyboard to do the selection.
  • Fixed the text style dropdown when editing text in a Collection.
  • Fixed an issue where Collections contents sometimes can’t be deleted.
  • Fixed an issue where the cancel button isn’t functional in certain Collections dialogs.
  • Fixed some issues with the Mac Touch Bar when working with multiple tabs at the same time.
  • Fixed an issue where open tabs sometimes aren’t properly imported from Chrome.
  • Fixed an issue where extensions aren’t sorted by name on the Extensions management page.
  • Improved compatibility of certain websites with Tracking Prevention.
  • Fixed an issue where Edge shortcuts were created in the wrong location in the Start menu.

Thank you to everybody who’s been using Edge over the past year. With our GA just around the corner, we hope you know that this is just the beginning of our journey. The Edge Insider program and builds will continue even when there’s a Stable build available, and your feedback on them will be as crucial as ever!

Good to see things moving forward, amusingly though some years ago participating in beta development of software was seen by the developer as good for them to iron out issues for there benefit, recently its now seen as a privilege to use unfinished software, report bugs etc, I've done it with most Windows - Thanks MS for the new icon I'm so pleased you gave it though I never did play the game - How times change :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Dev channel update to 80.0.328.4 is live

Hello insiders, our big news this week is that we officially released native ARM64 builds! These builds are only available in Canary for now, but will be coming to other channels soon. Native ARM64 builds of Edge will run much faster and much use less battery life on ARM64 devices. If you’re running Canary on an ARM-based machine, you should get the ARM version automatically with an update. As for our regular release, we’re bringing the Dev channel up to 80.0.328.4. All of the changes in it worth noting:

Improved reliability:

  • Fixed a crash on launch.
  • Fixed an issue where closing a tab sometimes causes the browser to crash.
  • Fixed an issue where installing extensions sometimes leads to a browser crash.
  • Fixed an issue where navigating to certain websites crashes the browser.
  • Fixed an issue where Edge crashes on close, causing the Restore Tabs prompt to unexpectedly appear at startup.
  • Fixed an issue where only the first Edge window opened in a session is all white with no UI.
  • Fixed a hang on launch.
  • Fixed an issue where Edge on Mac hangs when a user clicks the Restart button on the Settings page to install an update.
  • Fixed an issue where favorites aren’t syncing properly between machines.
  • Fixed some issues where videos protected by DRM, such as on Netflix, don’t play.
  • Fixed an issue where the Share dialog doesn’t appear.
  • Fixed an issue where pinning a website to the Taskbar fails.
  • Reduced the number of times sync errors result in a prompt for user interaction.
  • Improved the reliability of screenshots so they stop appearing all black when submitting feedback.

Changed behavior:

  • Fixed an issue where extensions that are installed from the Chrome Web Store are not getting automatically updated.
  • Fixed an issue where Application Guard windows re-open when the browser is started even when the startup settings aren’t set to restore the previous session.
  • Fixed an issue where the Taskbar icon for Edge isn’t updated to the new icon for some users.
  • Fixed an issue where two Edge icons sometimes appear on the Taskbar after an Edge update.
  • Fixed an issue where some UI images on Mac have black backgrounds.
  • Fixed an issue where the first run experience appears on every new tab for some users.
  • Fixed an issue where users in certain countries who are not signed into Windows with a work or school account still are not able to remove “Work” profiles that were automatically added to Edge even after a previous fix for this issue was shipped.
  • Fixed an issue where the password save prompt unexpectedly appears when filling out credit card info on certain websites.
  • Fixed an issue where the … menu appears truncated.
  • Fixed an issue where Edge doesn’t interact properly with other applications that try to show dialogs in the foreground.
  • Fixed an issue where using the Mac Touch Bar to switch tabs sometimes doesn’t work properly if the tabs are playing video.
  • Fixed an issue where zoom is triggering in Reading View on Mac when it shouldn’t be.
  • Fixed an issue where new data types are available to sync, but they aren’t enabled by default.
  • Fixed an issue where the sync customization page during the first run experience doesn’t properly enable sync for the selected items.
  • Fixed an issue where enabling sync during the first run experience doesn’t enable sync on certain data types.
  • Improved the behavior of importing favorites on Mac.
  • Updated the sync Settings page to show more types of data that will be available in the future, but with the switches disabled until that data type is available.
  • Fixed an issue where there are two Passwords toggles and no Favorites toggle on the Settings page.
  • Fixed an issue where the Restart button is always visible on the language Settings page on Mac.
  • Fixed an issue where importing browser data from other Chrome profiles than the default one shows an incorrect profile name during the import process.
  • Fixed an issue where the setting to show the favorites bar is not imported properly from Chrome.
  • Improved what images are used when saving certain websites to a Collection.
  • Added the ability to copy all Collections items to the clipboard.
Finally, like last week, we’ve got a few known issues remaining:

Which you may read about here

to me feels faster then chrome will google allow the new edge browser to be used on android soon or will it probably
have to be stripped down so it does not overtake chrome usage share.

Dev channel update to 80.0.334.2 is live

Hello insiders, today we’re releasing build 80.0.334.2 to the Dev channel! The most important thing to know this week is that, after last week’s sync issues, we’ve temporarily disabled sync to prevent any more data duplication. As for the other noteworthy changes:

Added features:

  • Added a right-click option to sort individual favorites folders by name from the Favorites management page.
  • Added a new setting to always use Strict Tracking Prevention inside InPrivate windows.

Improved reliability:

  • Fixed a crash on launch.
  • Fixed an issue where searching from the address bar sometimes crashes the browser.
  • Fixed a SmartScreen crash when downloading certain items.
  • Fixed an issue where selecting context menu items on certain favorites entries causes a browser crash.
  • Fixed an issue where renaming a Collection sometimes crashes the Collections pane.
  • Fixed an issue where Application Guard windows sometimes crash upon startup.
  • Fixed an issue where navigation fails in Application Guard windows.
  • Fixed an issue where closing tabs that contain websites that are blocked by SmartScreen sometimes causes a browser crash.
  • Fixed an issue where deleted or edited favorites aren’t synced properly, causing the edit to be undone when it syncs back down.
  • Fixed an issue where syncing gets stuck in the “Setting up sync” state on browser startup.
  • Fixed an issue where processes that grow too large and stop working aren’t automatically fixed.
  • Fixed an issue where sync sometimes fails after restoring tabs after a browser crash.
  • Fixed an issue where large Collections aren’t properly exported to Word.
  • Fixed an issue where exporting a Collection to Excel sometimes fails.
  • Reduced the number of times a user needs to sign out and sign back into the browser in order to fix sync.

Changed behavior:

  • Temporarily disabled the ability to export Collections to Word and Excel on Mac.
  • Temporarily disabled one form of DRM support on ARM64, which may impact the ability to play certain DRM-protected videos.
  • Fixed an issue where windows that are minimized when the browser is restarted aren’t restored properly.
  • Fixed an issue where Netflix playback fails with error D7356.
  • Fixed an issue where the space bar doesn’t work when typing in the address bar.
  • Fixed an issue where the enter key doesn’t work when typing in the address bar.
  • Fixed an issue where the Windows Hello prompt to log into a website with the user’s OS credentials sometimes shows in an infinite loop.
  • Fixed an issue for users of work and school accounts where websites that try and fail to use the browser profile’s credentials to log in don’t subsequently allow the user to fall back and try the user’s OS credentials.
  • Improved the way Collections export images to Word documents.
  • Fixed an issue where items sometimes fail to be added to Collections.
  • Fixed an issue where webpage contents sometimes render all black if Collections is enabled.
  • Fixed an issue where adding certain images to Collections results in a card with a broken image.
  • Fixed an issue where PWAs installed for one user on a machine sometimes can’t be launched by other users on the machine.
  • Fixed an issue on Mac where feedback screenshots can’t be included when submitting feedback.
  • Fixed an issue where link context menus don’t show all the options if they’re opened via the keyboard instead of the mouse.
  • Fixed an issue where some websites that are pinned to the Task Bar launch new tabs instead of activating existing tabs when tabs with those websites already exist.
  • Fixed an issue where open tabs aren’t properly imported from Chrome.
  • Fixed an issue where the wrong icon appears on web notifications.

Known issues:

  • There are some issues where users with multiple audio output devices sometimes don’t get any sound from Edge. In one case, Edge becomes muted in the Windows Volume Mixer and unmuting it fixes it. In another, restarting the browser fixes it.
  • At certain zoom levels, there is a noticeable line between the browser UI and the web contents.
  • Last month, some users got a “Work” account automatically added to the browser that wasn’t removable. Although we recently enabled the ability for some users to remove this account, there’s still an issue where users who are signed into Windows with a work or school account may not be able to remove that account from the browser.
  • Clicking a link on one virtual desktop currently opens a new tab in a window on a different virtual desktop if there’s no window open on the current desktop but there is on another. This is a regression from past behavior, which opened a new window on the current desktop.
  • Jumplist entries are not consistent between the Start Menu and the Task Bar for some users. We believe this is due to the shortcut on the Start Menu not getting migrated properly after an Edge update and are working on a fix. Additionally, after getting the update for the new icon, there are still places on the Start Menu, for example when searching, that still show the old icon. Other places like the Task Bar may be able to be fixed by un-pinning and then re-pinning any Edge shortcuts that already exist there.
This issue was inherited from upstream Chromium, and a fix for it just went in upstream, so the next Dev update should have it.

We won’t be updating next week due to the holidays, but in the meantime we’re very thankful for all your feedback and suggestions!

Fixed an issue where closing tabs that contain websites that are blocked by SmartScreen sometimes causes a browser crash.

I encountered this bug quite a few times when testing phishing links. Will test to check about claimed improvements.

Edit: Edge did not crash after recent testing on phishing links.

I rely on friends like you because I don't follow the social media giants like Twitter.
Will keep you informed.
I only use Twitter passively, follow just a few accounts for the latest info.
Sometimes you can get great interaction with businesses and developers through social media.
