My neighbor just asked me to take a look at her laptop to see if I can speed it up. It's been years since I did this kind of work, so none of the old tricks I had seem to work.
Whenever I connect to the Internet, her CPU becomes pegged at 100%. I see presumably bogus copies of notepad.exe, cmd.exe, presentationhost.exe, msiexec.exe, svchost.exe, etc. running and using lots of memory/making heavy use of the CPU. Process Explorer tells me that they are making lots of TCP connections, quite a few of which go to AWS and Facebook IP addresses, though lots of other IPs show up. Sometimes I can kill these processes, though they just come back, and other times I get access denied. If I disconnect from the network, the CPU usage drops to ~50%.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
