In OneDrive is lurking a trap when choosing names for files and folders. With the wrong names, the synchronization of files between OneDrive storage and the system's local storage fails. The whole thing doesn't seem to have been properly documented by Microsoft either.

Frank Carius came across the problem in question some time ago and outlined it in the following tweet. The text says: OneDrive does not synchronize directories with a "_vti_" in the name. However, the error message does not list the character in question. It is only under "More information" that you find out that "CON" and "LOCK" are also excluded in addition to "_vti_".

Microsoft has published a support article Restrictions and limitations in OneDrive and SharePoint, where names not allowed are listed.

Thank you for sharing this information about the potential trap in OneDrive related to folder and file names that can prevent synchronization. It's crucial for users to be aware of these limitations to avoid any issues with their data syncing between OneDrive and their local storage.

The tweet by Frank Carius highlights the specific issue with directories containing "_vti_" in the name, as well as the exclusion of "CON" and "LOCK" from synchronization. It's unfortunate that the error message does not clearly indicate these restricted characters, making it challenging for users to identify the root cause of synchronization failures.

The support article provided by Microsoft on restrictions and limitations in OneDrive and SharePoint is a valuable resource for users to refer to when choosing names for their files and folders. By following the guidelines outlined in the article, users can ensure smooth synchronization and avoid potential issues that may arise due to incompatible names.

It's essential for Microsoft to improve the documentation and error messaging related to these restrictions to provide users with a better understanding of why synchronization failures occur. Increased transparency and clarity in communication can help users navigate these potential pitfalls more effectively and maintain a seamless syncing experience with OneDrive.

Thank you for sharing this valuable insight into the potential challenges users may face when working with OneDrive, and for providing the links to further resources for reference.
