It features end-to-end encryption, multi-device syncing and offline downloads.

Proton, which is best known for its end-to-end encrypted email service, is launching its cloud-based storage solution on Windows starting today.

The key difference between Proton Drive and other cloud-based storage options is that it will offer free, encrypted file storage by default. The service will also offer all of the essentials such as multi-device syncing, offline downloads and version history. Proton says that it saw beta Windows users upload five times more data than its mobile and web app users combined. It says that over 65 percent of its overall users access the service from a Windows device, which probably explains why a Windows app came before a Mac one. Proton claims that all files are encrypted before they’re uploaded to its servers so “not even Proton can access these files.”

With today’s announcement, Proton Drive now has native applications on Windows, iOS and Android. The company says that a native Mac application is coming soon, though it seems to have missed its plans to offer early access in the first half of 2023.

Download: Proton Drive Windows app

At Proton, we aim to create a privacy-centric internet that empowers people worldwide to regain control of their digital lives. Today, we’re excited to announce our next step toward this better internet with the launch of the long-awaited Proton Drive Windows app.

With the Proton Drive Windows app, syncing your files and photos is effortless, allowing you to access them from any device. Now, you can automatically back up your files from your Windows device to our end-to-end encrypted cloud. This ensures continuous accessibility, even if you lose your laptop or encounter technical issues. And with Proton Drive’s version history feature allowing you to recover your files if you fall victim to a ransomware attack, your files have never been safer. You can use the Proton Drive Windows app with Windows 10 and 11.

Proton Drive for Windows also preserves our unique end-to-end encryption, meaning no one else, not even Proton, can decrypt your synced files. This encryption doesn’t just cover your files’ contents but also their metadata, including file and folder names, file sizes, dates uploaded, and more. Like all Proton apps, Proton Drive for Windows is open source, meaning anyone can independently verify that our encryption works as described. Proton Drive also uses cryptographic signatures to verify the authenticity of your files and prevent data tampering.

Beyond our end-to-end encryption, Proton Drive, as a Swiss company, also protects your data with Swiss privacy laws, which are among the strongest in the world. Proton also never stores your files on third-party cloud services. All your data is stored on servers we own and operate in Europe, and these servers are further protected by full-disk encryption.

Unfortunately it’s only avail for Windows clients at this time.
While community feedback is always important, it’s especially vital at these early stages, so we will send beta invites via email based on our ability to keep up with the feedback. We’ll collect feedback both on Reddit (new window) and at drive@proton.me. Once the macOS app is released, we’ll also work on our planned Linux version.

Swiss-based privacy startup Proton today announced the availability of its end-to-end encrypted cloud storage service for Mac users with the launch of its macOS app.

Proton Drive lets users sync files between Mac and the cloud, access files offline, and free up space on local drives. Unlike iCloud, all data (including metadata) is end-to-end encrypted by default, so that no-one – not even Proton – can see the files.

Files in Proton Drive are synced on-demand, meaning they don't take up space on the local computer until they are needed. Meanwhile, files and folders saved in the Proton Drive folder automatically sync online to Proton Drive, and any changes made locally are mirrored across all other devices linked to the Proton account.

When files and folders are downloaded for offline access, Proton Drive syncs changes when an internet connection next becomes available. Users can also access and restore previous versions of files via the web interface. It's worth noting that only files stored in the Proton Drive folder are synced, but Proton says it is working to enable synchronization for any local folder.
