This morning my brother’s subscription to Kaspersky Internet Security has expired, soI had to install a new antivirus.
I thought about what product to install and I wanted to try something different, so I chose VIPRE Antivirus Premium.
I have personally tested this product dozens of times without problems and with great results.
But this time I made a mistake.What mistake? Well I should tell to you that at the end of VIPRE installation process ,you will always find a setup wizard from which you can configure VIPRE settings.
Now,after you select from several settings , you’ll get to a screen that will ask you if you want to start the firewall or not.
Normally, the firewall is disabled by default, but I decided to choose the “Learning mode” although VIPRE recommended this setting for advanced users only,and my brother was far from being one.
After I finish the “Setup Wizard” .. “BANG” the first firewall alert pops-up.I selected “Allow” ,and try to move on , then after 3 seconds “BANG” another one..”Allow” again, then ,you guessed it another one.In fact VIPRE managed to dispaly 10 alerts in less then 10 minutes.
Then my brother came to the computer and the madness began.
He tried to start Steam (gaming platform) and yes, the VIPRE Firewall need it some answers.He calmly selected “Allow” on the first alert but others followed so he did get annoyed a little.Then we tried to start Yahoo!Messenger (IM platform) and other alerts came….
His solution ? “Shut down” VIPRE.
So my question is : Why isn’t GFI adding a white list to their Firewall?Because VIPRE Antivirus Premium is a very solid product and If they add a white list to their HIPS and Firewall they can have one of the best security suites on the market.
Also GFI can you make your “pop-ups” more user friendly?A newbie that will enable the firewall will never know what he allowed or denyd base on your pop-ups.
Conclusions :
Buy VIPRE Antivirus Premium,it’s a great product, but when you install it ,if you are a newbie or simply hate pop-ups ,go with the default installation.
And GFI please add a white list to your great product.
I hope that one day GFI will call this product : “VIPRE Internet Security” and not “VIPRE ‘Antivirus Premium” ;)
