The resolution commonly associated with HD video-capable TVs has apparently become more widespread among displays, around the world, than 1,024 x 768 pixels.

It was only a matter of time before the HD resolution, 1,366 x 768 pixels, became the most commonly used in the world.

Until not too long ago, that position was held by 1,024 x 768 pixels.

Alas, the determination of laptop makers to only use widescreen panels, and the similar habit of TV and monitor makers, simply gave 1,366 x 768 too much of a boost.

In other words, the 1,024 x 768 setting has started on the steady road towards obscurity and, with it, so has the 4:3 image aspect ratio.

"The data reflects a continuing trend of users moving to larger screen resolution sizes," commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter.

"The screen resolution size people are using is a critical factor for developers when it comes to web design, particularly in the case of fixed width web pages."

Jack: I'm also used that resolution in Puppy Linux while in XP the resolution was likely similar to 1,024x768 since its does fine in my LCD type.

Also automatic resolution type is ok for me too.

I currently use a 1280 x 800 resolution. Not the best, but it works for me.

It seems like 1920x1080 is 1080p is the native resolution for 1080p.
Even so to get true 1080p movie playback, the movie file itself needs to have been filmed at 1080p.(Blu-Ray DVD discs)
Computer monitors
Some modern widescreen liquid crystal display (LCD), most widescreen cathode ray tube (CRT), and all QXGA monitors can natively display 1080p content. Widescreen WUXGA monitors for example support 1920×1200 resolution, which can display a pixel for pixel reproduction of the 1080p (1920×1080) format. The resolution is rare, but increasing in popularity amongst laptops in 2009; some laptops have a 13", 15", 17" or even a 18.4" display that run a resolution of 1920×1200 or 1920x1080. Additionally, many 23, 24, and 27-inch (690 mm) widescreen LCD monitors use 1920×1200 as their native resolution, 30 inch displays can display beyond 1080p at up to 2560x1600 (1600p). Many 27" monitors have native resolutions of 2560×1440 and hence operate at 1440p. Other 1080p-compatible LCDs have lower than 1920×1080 native resolution and cannot display 1080p pixel for pixel, relying on the display's internal scaler to produce an image resized to suit the display's actual resolution.
